Well, put it this way, one the definitive bootleg collection, The Work, spans 16 CDs and ends around 2001, much of it unreleased in any form. It's by no means definitive, merely covers what got out.
There are three sides to every story. My side, your side, and the truth. And no one is lying. Memories shared serve each one differently

There's probably thousands of unreleased recordings. But there's probably not nearly that many fully formed songs among them.

My compilation of the Work spans 20 CDs (volume 1,2,3,4 and 5). His output subsided the recent years. I wonder how many outtakes are left from 2001 - now. And what's in his vault and never saw the light of day in any form. Perhaps only his recording technicians know about it.

i think there's probably an album's worth of full fledged songs
in the vault for every album he released.

plus a huge amount of idea's, demo's, soundboard recordings of
shows, his version of all the songs he gave to others, lots of
instrumental stuff like the madhouse sessions and an enormous
amount of tapes containing jam sessions with other artists in
his studio like lenny kravitz, miles davis, santana, wendy and
lisa, michael b and sonny t. etc etc etc.

full fledged complete ready to release tunes are probably like
around 450.

jams, demo's and mixes, rough tracks etc probably another 500.

cool and I have the vast majority of these and many of them are absolute GEMS (though there are an equal number of duds). Certainly possible for Prince to release an excellent series of Anthology albums like The Beatles did - if only music

'I loved him then, I love him now and will love him eternally. He's with our son now.' Mayte 21st April 2016 = the saddest quote I have ever read! RIP Prince and thanks for everything.
