Planet Earth - cheap hypocrisy?

Why has P done nothing 2 put his $ where his mouth is with the sentiments of this album's title track? Why not at least carbon offset his performances (including free public transportation etc.)? Let alone his lifestyle...
What actions is he taking / has he taken to save the planet?

I was so impressed with all the L4OA stuff in the late 90s. The food drives at concerts and the 2000 celly were touching (if a little cheesy) because they were clearly sincere and not attention-getting (the media didn't give a rat's bottom about TAFKAP at the time). The fact that much of L4OA's activities were about empowerment (including political - e.g. for black women) rather than just distributing alms also made it feel like it had some depth of thought and was not merely token.

And then it disappeared...

And now he's called his album PE and then printed millions of copies of a disk, many of which will get tossed in the trash. It seems childish and egotistical not to realize that such a superficial treatment of so critical an issue can be perceived as callous cynicism and make a mockery of the idea itself...

A little bit more than my 2 cents, sorry (but it's been bothering me).

Jehovah and ecology really don't go, the world is going to be turned over to eternal paradise after the end days anyway. Sooner things get destroyed "the better".

Anyway yeah I'd estimate (at least) one million of those Sunday Mail plastic cover discs and card sleeves went straight to landfill. Plus the Prince fans want the Sunday Mail copy AND the official hologram cover relase when it dropped. So double the trouble.

Roll on the download era I say, way too many simpletons go on about "I have to hold the CD and liner notes in my hand". Evolve chilluns...

I'm thinkin' that era was more about those in the "collective" than Prince himself. Show me where he's been charitable since then and prove me wrong. Hopefully some of Sheila rubs off on 'im.

Actually L4OA is still in existence and people are still being helped by it. There is a website online which lists a nonprofit's Form 90 (I believe), all nonprofit agencies have to turn in this form to the IRS, which lists what the agency does, etc. Last year, there were numerous donations made to other charity organizations by L4OA. Just because it's not talked about what organizations are being donated to, doesn't mean it's not happening.

At least in the short term people actively choose to purchase her CDs though. Prince forced millions of his on the readership of a middle England rightwing weekly. This is before we even factor in 21 London Arena dates in which every ticket gets yet another copy of this album.

They'll be piled up everywhere and absolutely worthless. As such the OP is right to call out "Planet Earth" as Prince's ecological nadir ironically as it sounds. A truly dodgy way of caring for the water and the fragile atmosphere...

"forced" No one is being forced to do or listen to anything. I honestly think you guys don't see the way P is turning the music industry on its head and yes he could find a better to do things so that his actions are pro-environment.

Give him some time to figure it all out.

Well people never refuse a freebie even if it then becomes refuse. Get what I did there? The newspapers have a generally wasteful attitude with unwanted covermounted CDs/DVDs already granted and Prince became part of that. As such the message on said CD as OP states is pretty hypocritical.

Thanks for the replie. I don't really see how my post counts as bitching - I think i was raising legitimate points. The only posts here that don;t deal with the issue (for OR agianst) are the ones that say: "stop bitching!" To which I say: "get abrain!" or better yet: "get an opinion, and when you have, share it with us!"

As the intelligent posters have pointed out, my issue was with him supposedly presenting an ecological message w/o backing it up with actions.
I hadn't thought about the JW angle, but I find it hard to believe it's that callous.
If you notice I didn't say that the L4OA charity work had stopped (someone posted here a few years ago that it's going on anonymously) but that it "disappeared". I have enormous respect for anonymous good works, so no complaints there, but that doesn't excuse no public display of RESPONSIBILITY for the environment to match the words of the album. As I said, I was using L4OA as a positive example of what he's done before (and I don't buy this "collective" nonsense - P makes the decisions, always).

the songs tricks you into thinking it's about ecological conservatism, it's really not when all is said and done, it's about the religious belief that the end of days is upon us. (not that I'm religious)

similar in a way to john lennon's "imagine" which tricks you into believing the song's about peace, when it's actually talking about how people should drop the beliefs they hold dear if those beliefs differ from yours

it's more about having a sense of respect for our home. jeez, the publicity on the topic is a good enough reason for the album.

Prince is listed as President and Kirk Johnson is listed as manager, or was it Prince listed as CEO and Kirk listed as President? Either way, he is still listed as being in control of it and knowing Prince, he is very much in control of what charities get what.

i bet it was his way of checking in with the Live Earth gigs and Al Gore

since they had asked him to appear

but yeah he probably doesn't even recycle

he probably went out and rented Gore's movie, then got inspired and wrote a song about it during the credits and he was done

does Jehovah really believe that the sooner we end life on earth, the better?

that rocks

The concert and covermount CDs are in recycled paper.

The CD is in a digipack made from recycled paper in the US.

That is already more than the vast majority of other artists and because of the lack of a major label except for distribution, it is Prince making that packaging decision.

I would guess Prince has raised and given away more than any of us here will ever do, as you have reminded us of.

Seriously, the "issues" people have with Prince get weaker each day.

I'm off to U2 dot com. I don't know why each U2 CD doesn't have a satellite link to a drill in Africa so each purchase can provide clean water for a village. I'm going to get on Bono's ass.
[Edited 8/1/07 23:09pm]
Studies have shown the ass crack of the average Prince fan to be abnormally large. This explains the ease and frequency of their panties bunching up in it.

You've nailed it really. The only ecological lines: "Did we care for the water? The fragile atmosphere?" are rhetorical questions, humans blatantly failed on both counts. So moreso he's glorying in the end days and the opportunity for biblical prophecy to take place.

Kudos to him if thats true, I see no such mentons on that 2.8m copies given away with the Sunday Mail though and the bottom line is theres no way to undo the effects of burning millions of CDs, a lot of oil and carbon emissions to manufacture that won't degrade for a very long time.

At Live Earth the musicians were very apologetic, the above and process of touring are the antithesis to anything ecological sadly. An evolutionary move to people only needing a quick download to their i-pod or computer would be a massive shift from the need to hold a load of packaging in your hands everytime you hear music as I suggest above.

OK!? What the hell u doin? (im referring to the poster).

And yes Im one of those people who like books and liner notes. I like to get down to every detail..even down to who was the engineer..what dates they recorded and how many takes happened during the session. Hell if it was up to me I'd like a picture of what they wore in the studio while making the song.

That's just me though...I am more of a music freak than anything.

I heard that Prince once staved off an almost omnipotent alien being from siphoning off all planet Earth's energies in order to satiate it's all-consuming hunger.
That's something.
