Does anybody else miss the "dirty" Prince? His new music seems to be so "clean". I miss passionate wild crazy songs like Now, Come, Pheromone, We can funk and others. This phylosophical Prince is cool, but I wish he did some nasty songs as well. Well, I guess nowadays being a Jehovah witness, it is less likely. His music has always been full of "animalistic instints, sounds, music", which is somehow missing now. What do ya´ll think?
I´d also love to hear more of funky music!!! "When Michael Jackson is just singing and dancing, you just think this is an astonishing talent. And he has had this astounding talent all his life, but we want him to be floored as well. We really don´t like the idea that he could have it all."

I think his old lyrics were even much more philosophical than the new ones. I don´t necessarily miss the cussing or the sexual content but I do miss the urgency, drive, emotion and rawness that he used to have. Dirty lyrics don´t equate quality, I didn´t like most of his latest attempts of trying to write something remotely "dirty" ( like that "wet circles round the toy " line on TRC´s Mellow or the marshmallow line on Hot Wit U , or his beating around the bush like in Incense and Candles where a decent sounding song gets ruined by all that " I want to do it to you but then I don´t, take your clothes off...no, no..better not take your clothes off cuz that´s not good....blablablabla" .
It´s not about an 49 year old performer humping the speakers or doing the splits (I´ll never understand the importance of that) or him singing "dirty" lyrics in a sexually oversaturated world but about not letting anyone or anything dictate what he should do or shouldn´t do with his art. Sometimes he sounds like he´s restricting himself. " I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

Nope. I don't. I have all the older albums and tours anytime I need "dirty" Prince. He would never recapture it---even Sexy MF started to sound contrived... "New Power slide...."

Sometimes he sounds like he´s restricting himself. I didn´t mean necesarily the dirty lyrics. I mean the music that made you feel the passion, rawness in it - as you said. I don´t like Hot with you that much, Songs like Rhippogadazippa (or how it´s spelled), the Ride, Sleep around, Shh, I hate you - you can just feel the raw emotions especially sex from the music itself. Prince is the best at expressing passion through music. These songs I miss. I am sure you know what I mean. I agree with your post though. Nicely said. Hell Yes That's the point he's doing what he feels right now, and alot of people r just not excepting it. I don't care what he does as long as he doesn't hurt anyone and as long as he's happy I'm happy and that's all that matters. GO HEAD PRINCE! But I wouldn't mind seeing a split or 2! I admit, I kind of do miss "that" Prince. However, I think it's great that he's lasted as long as he has. And that his music has evolved along with himself evolving. If I ever want to experience "that" Prince, just have to throw on one of his old cd's - and then remember the "Days O' Wild". [Edited 7/25/07 17:43pm]

I miss him, I do. But I love being able to play Musicology, 3121, and PE in the car with my kids without any quick changes! Of course, I can't put the iPod on shuffle, but that's ok. Plus---subtle is still sooooo sexy. I mean, what's sexier than "I'm gonna seek this thang like a buried treasure. . ." or "I got somethin you won't know how to handle"
Well, maybe "With my tongue in the crease, baby I go 'round, when I go down" is sexier.

I think I've grown up with Prince and his sexiness/dirtiness is just 'refined' like Domino sugar but just as tasty as the raw sugar cane he gave us in the good old days. It is a matter of taste but I know the raw Prince lit a fire in me hotter than the refined stuff. I can safely say that I'm addicted to both, but I cosign with the comment of not having to skip songs now when listening with my daughter.

I miss the dirty Prince. He kept you in suspense of not knowing what he was going to sing about or do next. Now, it's like he just fits in with the others.

I miss the dirty Prince for sure....The suttle clever dirty like in Joy N Repetition and Shhh. Come on ladies think of Prince asking you "HOW U GONNA STAND THERE AND ACT LIKE U DON'T WANT THIS?"
L O N G P A U S E ! Oops! Ya'll can't see me right Does anyone see like me he struggles with wanting to dance on stage when the funk hits him? I'm sorry I'm just waiting for something a lil suttle dirtiness to come back. Fuck that shit...I'm a keep it real....not raunchy "taking taste and things" out of my mouth.....more like "one yank and things flying wherever"!!! I miss the "dirty"
I agree with those who said the "dirty" was about the passion, raw-ness and unpredictability to Prince's music. After listening to Planet Earth 3 times, I feel that it sounds a lot like Adult Contemporary music. Same with 3121 and Musicology. I like a few of the songs on Planet Earth and they will get many more listens. But his "dirty" era has songs that just shock me, grip me, pull me in, shake me up and I start moving to the beat almost involuntarily and I FEEL it in my bones - even now - after hearing these songs so many times for so many years. . . . and when I'm talking "dirty" I just mean music and lyrics that leave a mark on me after hearing it. His guitar work was "dirty", bass line "dirty", drums "dirty", musical arrangement "dirty", vocal stylings "dirty" (just in sound, not even counting lyrics). . . Even "clean" songs such as Empty Room and Crucial (two favorites) . . . sound passionate, honest and real and leave a mark on me - "dirty". And stuff like D.M.S.R., Bambi or Soft and Wet. . don't have anything real explicit as far as words, but sure make me feel "dirty" in such a good way And what I love about the "dirty" era is that he put into music what I feel many of us at some point think in our private thoughts, share only with our intimate friends and lovers and experienced or wish we could share with someone, or wish we could have experienced. And in the "dirty" lyrics I often find various layers of meaning beyond the obvious - --- that's just my 2 bits ----
