The Album Sucks! wink

As I'm in first, I may as well shove my opinion out there!

Planet Earth - 8 out of 10 - Great hauting style. Would have got a 10 if P could just learnt to get in some alternative background singers rather than rely on his own multi layers all the time. You like this if you like "Strays of the world".

Guitar - 7 out of 10 - Great rock pop, Will feature in a segue with Peach somewhere live I'm sure. You'll like this if you like "Peach".

Somewhere here on Earth - 7 out of 10 - Great little ballad, maybe wrongly placed in the track order, but a fine tune and much more original that throw away numbers like On The Couch and Satisfied. You'll like this if you like "One Nite Alone".

The One you Wanna C - 7 out of 10 - Simple but catchy pop tune. In the same vain as When U were mine. Sounds 80s but modern at the same time. You'll like this if you like "Neon Telephone"

Futura Baby Mama - 5 out of 10 - Retro sexy ballad by the numbers. Could do well in the USA where bland RnB rules, but overall, it sounds like an outtake from 1983. You'll like this if you like "I hate U".

Mr Goodnight - 2 out of 10 - No Prince. No. A song that seems to be built around the rap structure of Muse 2 The Pharoahs. Give it up. Please. You'll like this if you like "Good Life - Big City Remix".

All The Midnights In The World - 5 out of 10 - Nothing special, nice tune. You'll like this if you like "Circle Of Amour".

Chelsea Rodgers - 8 out of 10 - Divine bass line! Prince hasn't been this funky in the studio since Days Of Wild! You like this if you like "Gett Off Urge Remix".

Lion Of Judiah
- 7 Out of 10 - Could be the grower. Great rock pop, without being too commercial. Love the vocal styles. You'll like this if you like "Money Don't matter 2 nite".

Resolution
- 7 Out if 10 - Like the previous track, a good little rock number. You'll like this if you like "Splash".

Overall

I've listened to the album about 20 times over the last week and it a fun trip. Nothing special, but enjoyable. Its like part 3 of a musicology/3121/PE trilogy.

But like many films, a fourth installment will be a sequel too far. P needs to pick up the guantlet next time around a break some boundries. He's in cruise control.

Its going to be a nice addition to the car stereo through the summer.

If PE was realeased in 1988, everybody would use the word masterpiece and if Lovesexy was realeased in 2007, everybody would say: "yeah, a pretty good album, but in the 80's Prince was better"!

Now, there's this stereotype that Prince can't reach the 80's peak, but as for me is just a prejudice. And PE proves eye m right.
In God we trust.

I haven't heard it yet but I'm looking forward to contrasting the two versions of "Guitar".

I really like the original version a lot.

Question.
So is Planet Earth Prince's guitar based/quirky pop/folkish album with a few slow jams and a dance track? To put it in simplistic terms.
Also when I say guitar based I don't mean hard rock guitar just electric guitar in general.
I've heard quite a bit but I've held back overall waiting for better quality.

Are these good references? Dinner With Delores, Reflection, ATWIAD (quirky stuff), The Truth, Parade (W&L stuff), Dream Factory...

when people say.....its not as good as the 80s or i am not feeling the new music....most of the time it has nothing to do with how good the music is or not....its about people wanting to feel young again....
to feel like they did when they were a kid listening to a prince album for the first time.....its their youth that they are missing...
to feel how they used to feel when they listen to a certain artist that they link to their younger years.....
thats why prince can never be today what he was in the 80s to most people because they are 25 years older and are different people to what they were back in the day...
.
i think prince is still making great music....i dont expect to be as excited listening to his new stuff as i did when i was 16 because he cant give me that back....i am 39 and i have a different outlook on life than i had then....
but i still enjoy his music and still crave new music from him and i think the new album is great.....
i enjoy it for what it is ....music from a great middle aged artist to a long time fan in his late 30s who still marvels at his immense musicial talent.
.
enjoy the ride people...its got a long way to go..... smile

Yeah, I think that covers it pretty well... And if that hybrid seems like it would be good to you, you will likely be pleased with Planet Earth. I love it!

I will be pleased. cool
I mean 3121 was pretty much his funky/RnB/Groove/Dance kinda thing. So that said, I'm ready for this "hybrid". Something different with good execution, is something good. IMO.

Prince is a censored for that Chocolat reference.

Also, he is too old to be using "dime." That's young people slang.

I don't know why... there's nothing very censored -worthy in Chocolat. The real question is... isn't the movie just a tad too pagan for JW's? lol

After almost listening a week to the new album (sorry people, who havent heard it yet) some of my views on the songs and the album in general are a bit changed.

I still consider Mr. Goodnight and Future Baby Mama very lousy 'efforts', but i have no come to the point that i am allready skipping those songs while listening to the album neutral

My enthousiasm for The title track has weakenend: I mean, i love the bridge (some others don't), the finale is typically Prince-bombast: a guilty pleasure, but oh, oh, the melody lines of the song, are just not strong. He really should have put more effort in the songwriting.

Someone i stated before i feel even more now: Planet Earth just doesn't work as an album. The songs don't fill very 'well' together. Its more a collection of seperate songs then 'an album'.
In the past Prince has shown that diversity doesnt necessarily mean a bad album (Sign of the Times is the most obvious example), but it just doesnt work on Planet Earth. Both Musicology and 3121 did sound more cohesive in their.

I still cant decide if the songwriting on Lion of Judah is just weak, or that the song has some unusual kind of melody biggrin

One 'pro': i have heard better quality versions of the songs in the last few days, so i have been able to hear more details in the instrumentation and arrangements. And when it comes to that, Planet Earth is a step forward from Musicology and 3121. The production is better, and the arrangements are in general more colourfull and interesting.

To conclude: i rated the album 8/10 the first day i heard it, unfortunately i can not give more to it then a 7/10 at this moment.

My feeling is that the musicpress will also range it that way: expect to see a lot of ***-star rating in the Mojo, Uncut, Q, Rolling Stone, or what other magazine you can imagine.

Actually you're better off watching a horror movie if that's what you're after. Scientifically speaking.

Has anyone heard if any bookstores will be carrying The Daily Mail next week? I know, for instance, that Borders (at least in Chicago) carries international newspapers from various cities around the world. They don't arrive on Sunday, of course, but are available mid-week.

The only problem is that, from my experience, each store gets maybe five to ten copies of any given paper.

I wonder if any Borders stores (or B&N or whatever) will be getting copies of this paper during the week next week...anyone know?

I called the Borders in my area (NE Indiana), and the guy said they do carry The Mail but as to when they get it he didn't know for sure. He said "We get it whenever they send it". The last one they got was for July 1.

I don't have any longing for the so called good ole days of Prince's career:

A. Because I did not start listening to Prince until 1998 (and actually liked New Power Soul)
B.Because I'm not old enough to have had any "good ole days".

With that said I don't believe Planet Earth will be an album that I will pull up on my iPod and want to hear random songs off of it like I do when I think of albums like Sign O the Times, The prince Album, The Gold Experience, Lovesexy, or Diamonds and Pearls. Now that's not to say I'd like something like any of these album here in the 21st century. I respect where Prince is at musically. It just means I don't dig it. Mr. Goodnight I must've listened to 20 times today in the park. Chelsea Rogers really is not the fire that everyone around here seems to be burning from. And the rest of the album (With the exception of Somewhere Here on Earth) is filler. Hands down this isn't one of his best albums since the 21st century.
