The One U Wanna See ... This could have fit on ATWAID in place of Raspberry Beret. I'm not saying this is better than RB by any means, but I haven't heard a song like this from Prince in a long time... I really, really, really, really hope Wendy & Lisa stick around for a few more albums. Take that for what you will. GREAT backing vocals. But I could REALLY do without that "I'm not tryin' to be a hater" line.
Every album needs a line like that... Remember cringing at the end of 3121 when he says, 'it's going down, like the walls in Berlin'... OH my goodness...how STUPID. Love the new album though.

Very nice details to hear (Lisas piano's, those typical distored Prince background vocals) and some songs improve a lot from it (certainly the title track) NOTE TO MODS: I'm NOT asking where or how to get this! just wanted to ask Riverpoet31 if you've heard a copy of the actual album (listening party perhaps?) or if there's a 320 kbps leak out there floating around? I've been wondering the same thing. Hmmm. I will say I'm diggin' the reviews on this. I've heard bits and pieces (By choice) and I'm kinda waiting on the real thing. I like when people are saying some stuff is weird, bizarre or or could've been on ATWIAD/Parade type comments. I'm not expecting this but it sounds like P is going more towards his quirky pop side and that, I think, is cool. I'm a bit tired of the jazzed-out/mellow smooth P, even know I like that, ready for something different. Sounds like PE is (minus a few cuts). Fantasy is reality in the world today. But I'll keep hangin in there, that is the only way.

I have listened to the album once. My opinions about Prince albums usually change drastically after several listens. But here are my first impressions:
Planet Earth: Awesome guitar work at the end. I really don't like when it gets dramatic in that three chains of gold style. It turns into cheesy rock opera for a moment but if you can get past that, the reward is an incredible guitar solo at the end of the song. 6/10 Guitar: POP! With very fun guitar layering. This song was never meant to be anything but a fun pop song and it does a very good job at that. 8/10 Somewhere Here On Earth: The best of the songs with the word Earth in it on this album. Actually it is very pretty and i know this will be one of those songs that will end up on a mix cd with other beautiful prince songs. adore, fantastic, call my name, beautiful ones. This is probably my favorite song on the album. 9/10 The One U Wanna C: Is this an echo and the bunnymen cover? Isnt this song on a John Hughes movie soundtrack? I really like it. I am a sucker for a good pop song. Its produced well. His voice sounds good. Great bass line. Bass drum on all fours. The guitar solo fits in perfectly with the song. 9/10 Future Baby Mama: I like the grown folks radio intro. My favorite radio station is grown folks radio. I did not really care for Call My Name when i heard it on Tom Joyner before it was released and now its one of my favorites. I think this might be the same. Its light and a lot less soulful than call my name but it might grow on me. I have a feeling we may be hearing this on the radio soon. 8/10 All the Midnights in the World: He has that voice he does a lot in the truth cd. Dionne, marie claire, etc. This song is EXTREMELY cheesy, but i had no desire to advance to the next track. actually puts a smile on my face. (i like arms of orion and starfish and coffee (guilty pleasures)) and its very short. reminds me of something you might sing to a five year old before bedtime. 7/10 Chelsea Rodgers: Reminds me of sleep around from emancipation. If thats your thing, you might like this song. Makes me want to strap on some rollerskates and dance. Groovy beat and bass. Nice rhythm guitar. I like it. I like it better than get on the boat and pretty man and sleep around and other songs in the same style. Nice sax solo. Dont think its Maceo - sounds more like Candy or even Eric Leeds. You should never say 33BCE in a rap though. 7.5/10 Lions of Judah: Not impressed with this one. Struggled not to track up to the next song. Reminds me a little of Cinnamon Girl without energy. 5/10 Mr. Goodnight: Did someone say Beautiful Loved and Blessed part two? Did we really need a second one? I might like it in the future, but right now not so much. It kind of reminds me of Muse to the Pharoah, but I really like Muse. 6/10 Resolution: I really like the acoustic guitar intro to this one. "Come with it" The lyrics are cliche. What I really like about this song is that it is a serious song with a serious message and the music and melody are just the opposite. Reminds me a little of Happy Days. Yes the television show. Dont know why, but I imagine prince singing this one at als or arnolds or whatever it was called. 8/10 guilty pleasure. Overall I like the album. Dont think it will be a hit commercially, but thats alright. Somewhere here on earth and the one u wanna c are going to be the ones i listen to a lot. cant wait to hold the final product in my hand and page through the booklet, etc.

In my opinion no song from 3121 can touch Planet Earth, Somewhere Here On Earth, The 1 U Wanna C, Lion of Judah, Resolution, Future Baby Mama and All The Midnights in the World except perhaps Fury and The Word. So that's a good thing. [Edited 7/11/07 10:57am]

I gotta say, I'm liking this album more and more every time I listen to it. Well, I'll be jiggered: It's a new Prince album, I actually *want* to listen to - That hasn't happened in a very long time. I'm evening coming around to the songs I didn't like before. The only song I tend to skip now is 'Mr. Goodnight' and I can even find a little merit in that if I look hard enough (it kinda brings to mind early 90s R&B stuff), I just don't really look to Prince for this kind of thing since it sounds forced and I think it doesn't really fit with the rest of the album. - It sounds like this and Future Baby Mama were shoe-horned in to get some R&B radio airplay. Chelsea Rodgers could've fit right on TRC in my opinion, it's got that same party vibe as 'The Everlasting Now', should work great live. I've done a total 180 degrees on 'All The Midnights In The World' it's now one of my favourites, also like 'Resolution' now and I'm coming round to 'The One U Wanna C'. Wow, a new Prince record that I love, it's a miracle! Agree it is nice to want to really listen to it! I keep waking up every morning with a PE song stuck in my head all day - today its "All the Midnights In The World" and that melody is super-sticky and dare I say it...actually not that bad of a song. Also "Mr Goodnight" will sound much better than the crap version we hear now - cant wait till Sunday night! The greatest live performer of our times was is and always will be Prince.

Planet Earth: really like the opening with the piano, the drumtrack and later the guitar. The verses are cool and stripped down. The chorus is a bit busy for my taste, as if there’s just too much going on all of a sudden. The bridge still reminds me of Could it be Magic and doesn’t do much for me. After the bridge the verse and the building tension do sound nice. Reminds me of Last December mixed with 3 Chains of Gold. (7.5) Guitar: as far as pop rock tunes go I like this a lot. It’s breezy and light and the guitar gives it a bit of an extra edge. Still a lightweight tune in Prince’s catalogue. Nothing too dramatic or deep, just fun fluff. Not a guilty pleasure by any means but not a classic either. Wish he would have kept that guitar solo at the end going on longer and louder, like say let’s go crazy. (7) Somewhere Here On Earth: Cool instrumentation! Love the piano and horns, although I’m not too sure about the drums, could have sounded a bit more real perhaps. Anywho, vocal track is absolutely top notch highest caliber prince delivery. Reminds me of the “One Nite Alone cd more than it reminds me of Power Fantastic but I can see how people would think of that one because of the horns and the piano et all. The only thing I don’t like about this song is that he has this classic sounding timeless song and he has to mention a pager.(8) The One U Wanna C: Very catchy. It’s stuck in my head all the time though I don’t really like it, lol. I think this will be a grower. Something I won’t play very often but will always like when it comes up on shuffle. Cool effort, nice arrangement with lost going on without it being too cluttered or over produced. It sounds breezy and open. (7) Future Baby Mama: Still not sure about the title but once again a nice vocal delivery and an all out vintage prince instrumental backing. Love the use of the linn on this one. It’s like an updated version of What Do U Want Me 2 Do more than anything else. And that’s a good thing imo cuz that is one of only 4 songs I can stand on Musicology. (7) Mr Goodnight: Love how he mentions a handful of songs or lines out of his catalogue in this tune. It flows well and contrary to what others have said I think it fits pretty well on this cd, especially coming right after Future Baby Mama which kind of leads into this track softly, in that it breaks with the more pop rock organic feel of the preceding tracks. Love the fact that it’s ‘rap’ yet the backing tracks sound more organic than he usually utilizes for these type of songs. Perhaps it’s a guilty pleasure but I just love Prince’s deep talking/rapping vocal. Not a classic lol but nice enough (6.5) All The Midnights In The World: After all the negative talk from the initial reviews I expected this to be horrible. Well, in fact I think it’s very very nice indeed. Sure it’s sweet but there’s a redeeming quality in it. The vocal harmonies are subtle and nice and the melody is different and quirky enough to save it from being syrupy. I’m a sucker for short, mid to fast tempo prince songs that last under 3 minutes and this is a great addition to those we already have. (7.5) Chelsea Rogers: Judging from people’s reviews I’m probably the only one who thinks this tracks would have been better off relegated to a b-side or an obscure online release. It’s not that the track is weak, it’s actually nice and bouncy. Love the way it flows effortlessly and the bass is so incredibly delicious. My gripe with this song is that it’s Shelby on vocals. I don’t like that. One of the most upbeat and bouncy tracks on the album and Prince himself is way down in the mix except some short shout outs. Although it’s a track with great potential this is without a doubt the one I will play least of all. Having said that, I think I will bust it out once in a while if only for that delicious breakdown at the end and the horns on it. (6.5) Lion of Judah: love the opening, the kick drum and the purple rain like guitar and the opening line is just sooo beatles “sitting on the floor of an all white room, feeling like the color blue”. Absolutely love it. It flows effortlessly, like many of the tracks on this album. Feels like it was recorded quickly and not messed with too much. Not overproduced or muddled. Clear and spontaneous sounding. (8) Resolution: another one of those songs that benefit from not being over produced and laced with a million different keyboards and cowbells. Most revolution sounding track imo even if it might not sound like something off Parade. The lyrics are amongst pearls before the swine and dear mr man subjects but come off less contrived than dear Mr Man imo. Which is what reminds me most of the Revolution/Wendy and Lisa stuff in the early days. The only time it leans toward cringe territory is when he says “come on now all over the world”, that is just too cliché for my taste. Beyond that it’s probably my fav track off the album (8.5) the main thing i like about this album is that unlike some previous albums, like Musicology, there is nothing on this that makes me cringe or think the album contains real filler. the production -as far as i can make out in this lousy quality- is perfect. it sounds fresh, light and breezy from start to finish with only the title track being an exception in all it's muddled 3 chains of gold glory. another nice thing about this album is that it sounds like an album again, diverse and with an erratic flow but still kind of glued. there's different styles but it doesn't feel like a mixtape which was what imo both musicology and 3121 suffered from somewhat. fcuz you can never know how long prince sat on these tracks but they sound as if they were recorded all together in a short space of time, without a million overdubs and mixes being made. the melodies speak for themselves, and eventhough most of them are not total classics, they don't reak of an insane kind of pretention or wanna be status. they just are and sound very healthy and uncontrived. i can't wait to go to the store and get my excellent quality copy of this, and listen to it over and over again. i'm not completely nuts about this but that's fine, from what i hear on it it sounds like it's an album that doesn't hit you like a ton of bricks but will remain a favorit for a very long time to come none the less. now all i've left to desire is a shitload of b-sides and outtakes from the 2005-2007 sessions popping up on 3121.com You like it! You really like it!

OK folks this is my take on the album...I’ll go through each song and score it out of 5. Then give a final overall score out of ten for the album.
Plant Earth – the solitary piano notes kicking off the track you know Prince is aiming for a big finish with this song. Initial thoughts when hearing it was to compare it to Michael Jackson’s Earth Song. However comparisons aside Prince manages to achieve the epic feeling pulling out all the stops at the end with over the top classic Prince guitar playing and high pitched vocal screaming that only Prince can pull off. Very powerful song will be AWESOME in a large concert arena like the O2 Guitar – Most people probably heard this one as it’s a re-release. This version is a much more polished commercial version. For non Prince fans this is probably the safest most accessible and palatable song on the album. I love this track it’s so catchy and fun. Can’t help singing to it. The guitar is the focus here, the track feels ‘studio enhanced’ (but in a good way) to give the guitar a clean energised sound making it pop out from the rest of the instruments. Good job ! Somewhere Here on Earth- The album takes a turn with this track and goes all sultry, smooth, soft and romantic....One for the ladies !. This is a slow jazz, late night, dinner track with piano and trumpet instrumental breaks. You can listen to with a glass of wine after sunset Very smooth. Prince’s vocals are intimate and simply outstanding I was impressed...Ladies will adore this! (maybe a 4 stars if you’re a lady) The One U wanna C – When I heard the loose country style guitar strummed to the opening of this song I thought oh no! HOW WRONG I WAS!! HOT DAMN THIS TRACK IS GOOD! Let me explain...quoting Michael Dean here who hosts the Prince Podcast on iTunes ‘THIS IS CLASSIC PRINCE... OF LIKE DREAM FACTORY DAYS BEFORE SIGN O THE TIMES ’ this is the real deal cats ! Fusion of country, pop and tight funk bass guitar licks. This song feels like a long lost Prince track! It climaxes at the end with Prince singing in falsetto style. Lovin’ it! Future baby Mama – I have not managed to hear this song in full but from the clips of heard I have not been impressed. The title of the song is a big turn off.... ‘Future baby mama’ ?! Comon Prince what were you thinking ?! Too cheesy, sounds like something an adolescent R&B pop star should be singing !!! Must be a track that fell off the back of the Emancipation album. Sorry folks this is the first bad track on the album. Mr Goodnight – Hmm another track that whiffs of cheese. However the track manages to keep itself together (only just). Prince does his ‘talking rap’ again which I don’t like. Nothing really special about this tune. The only thing that gels the track are the female backing vocals. Only memorable lyric is ‘...undeterred never the less a masterpiece on butter-scotch thighs’. All the midnights in the world – A simple sincere song. Prince sounds vulnerable and innocent in this short sweet track which is under 2mins 30secs long. Nice melody to listen to, one of those tracks which feels like he is singing about a forgotten dream. Not much I can say about it other than I liked it. Chelsea Rogers – Just when you thought the album was starting to fizzle out this track kick starts it again with style! My word this track has a hard thumping bass from the outset. It’s an infectious body shakin bopping song. Chelsea Rogers has the lead vocals on this song. Prince is very much hidden away in the background. The song itself is a fast paced jazz funk brass combination with the trumpet making a strong appearance. Good track but doesn’t have prince signature sound I was looking for. A good track nevertheless. Lion of Judah – Hmmm don’t know what to make of this song. It’s growing on me. Would class it in the same grouping as ‘All the Midnights in world’. Dreamy song, obviously with biblical influences. Nothing majorly good or bad with the song left me feeling empty as I didn’t really get the song. Revelation – Easy going melody, Prince talks about resolution and about how people should do what they say rather than speaking empty words with no follow through. Probably talking about society and politics in general. A weak track to finish with, no bad feelings about this one. Album synopsis: This has got be one of Prince’s better albums in recent times after the ‘Rainbow Children’. It starts off with the fantastic epic title track Planet Earth that blows you away. It demonstrates a myriad of musical styles; Prince keeps you guessing from one track to the next. Some tracks sound modern others more classical which is good, fewer cheesy lyrics when comparing to Emancipation (which is my opinion was a total joke and let down). Overall it is has strong guitar/rock influence and soulful sincerity touch to it, but more importantly a feel good feeling after listening to it. There are 3 or 4 strong tracks but is not groundbreaking compared to ‘Purple rain’ or have the raw creative stripped down funk found in ‘Controversy ‘ which I long for again ! But I guess times move on... . For overall variety and effort I give the album a 7/10 Thanks for reading hope it wets your appetite for more Prince ! Respect for Prince no matter what he does.

I'm thinking of tracks to replace 'Mr. Goodnight' with so far, I've got:
Empty Room (C-Note version), Pearls Before The Swine, When The Lights Go Down, Xogenous. I think Future Baby Mama is there for the same reason as Mr. Goodnight, and is almost as jarring, but I like the song, so it stays for me. Just that trio of songs in the middle - T1UWC, FBM and Mr Goodnight is all that is stopping this an album with no track skips for me.
