Prince has a VERY large fan base that will buy whatever he releases. This is what the recording and distribution industry are afraid of. He has full control of his career and music, and is setting a new standard of recording and distribution. He is truly showing artists today how they can be EMANCIPATED and free from the slavery (and its chains) of a record industry who cares about only the almighty DOLLAR, who leaves the artists and the fans without that which is God given; MUSIC!!! It is very interesting to note that for many years artists were "creatively strangled" by the record company executives with the A/R reps struggling to feed their families upon finding such creative artists.

well, the record stores act like they didnt benefit from his album sales in the past. he doesnt owe them anything, they got paid off of his 20 or so other albums, its his music..put it out there as he sees fit. B.A.D. IS THE ILLEST | |

Well, I know what you're saying from a financial standpoint. But if it's pissing off those in charge of his distrubution and music retailers, I can't see the positive aspects of that. He has a reputation for not playing friendly with suits, so this isn't exactly a new thing. But the friends that he'll lose at Virgin Megastore or Sony probably won't add up to the fans he'll reach with this current phase of his career in the UK. So I'm guessing that you're right...this will be a win/win situation in the longrun. | |

Yeah, he does seem to be burning bridges with retail on this decision, but that makes me think...we saw Tower close down last year...we're seeing the Virgin Megastores chain close down as we speak...Coconuts is gone...Best Buy is cutting back their music selections...really, the only wrecka stows surviving right now are the independent specialty shops, and the people who keep those stores open right now aren't gonna go to Footlight Records, Other Music or Reckless in search of the new Prince CD. A big chunk of his retail audience got turned away when the Towers and Virgins locked their doors, and the rest of em are already wise to the fact that they don't have to pay $20 for a 10 song CD at Barnes & Noble. I think that the things that hurt him in the 90's are the same things that will sustain him in a historical sense as a pioneer at the forefront of technology, distribution and marketing. I like it when Princey takes risks. This is an unexpected one, but he seems to actually have a plan right now. | |
