I dug it and I don't dig anything. lol

BTW, we heard Somewhere Here On Earth this Sunday at the Prince party. I.love.that.song. mushy

I had a feeling I wouldn't like it from the title. Now the "Call My Name" comparison nearly seals the deal. lol

I think you might be pleasantly surprised nod

With that song title, I was expecting a natural disaster worse than the Tsunami in 2004 lol But I LOVE this. It doesn't feel contrived or forced like some of his previous ballads and the production is excellent. It doesn't feel familiar at all and I love that, whereas some of his more recent ballads have been cut from the mold and were basically done while he slept.

LOVE THIS clapping

I'm so super jazzed for this album dancing jig

Nevermind lol I can't believe you can't even get with this. It's great lol

For whatever reason the ORG would not let me post there.
I was responding to murph...

Two things jumped out at me from reading most of the European reviews and some of the reviews on the Org...

As I said on Housequake, in a previous post, there seems to be a dislike for the more straight ahead "R&B Prince" songs that show up in the form of "Future Baby Mama" by most European fans and other Prince heads that love him for his quirky sensibilities...

I've had conversations with some of my folks overseas about Prince's R&B base and the thing that always intrigues me is how they are not the biggest fans of songs like "Do Me Baby," "International Lover," "Adore" and "Insatiable"

My sister had the 8 track to Prince and Controversy so I grew up on I Wanna Be Your Lover and Do Me Baby.I don't know how you cn be a Prince fan and not develop a ear for the genres that he blends. I started listening to Miles because of Prince. I started listening to Rock because of Prince. Now people hear other people praising a Prince song that differs from their particular taste . Next we hear the album sucks.

I have never been disappointed with a Prince album. Surprised maybe but disappointed ...never

It's actually P talking about how some women are not future baby mama material.

99 percent of women in america women arent baby mama material, I'd say this was a very astute observation by prince.

Mostly what Supa said upstairs. flipped off

Brilliant stuff. “Freedom” is the key here. It’s relaxed. It’s the anti-“Rave” rave.

You can compare this track to countless moments from Prince’s salacious past, but to me it sounds first and foremost like an at-ease Prince producing a gem in the 2007 studio (finally, it’s not live, but it works brilliantly).

And it has been holding up terrifically to repeat listens over multiple days. Like “Guitar” -- and probably even more so -- I have the overwhelming urge to play it again upon completion.

A lot of other stuff he’s released the last few years (especially the downloads) I’m checking out after only a few listens.

That’s 2 for 2. And if “Somewhere Here on Earth” sounds anything like it does live, some people like me are going to flip over this ballad.

Interesting thoughts on "Future Baby Mama..." Well, as most of you know, I did my own review of Planet Earth and it always surprises me how Prince fans have such strikingly diverse taste...Gotta love 'em...

I've had conversations with some of my folks overseas about Prince's R&B base and the thing that always intrigues me is how they are not the biggest fans of songs like "Do Me Baby," "International Lover," "Adore" and "Insatiable"...Being a cat from the Southside of Chicago I grew up with R&B radio as well as rock (from my crazy ass cousin) and hip hop...So I dig Prince's slow cuts for the most part as well as his quirky shit ("In All My Dreams" is one of my favorite Prince songs of all time)...

All this to say if you are fan of Prince's more soulful slow cuts, "Future Baby Mama" is for you...It's a song that could have been on any of his albums from the late '80s to the early '90s...And it has the classic "Prince R&B ballad" structure...Most of the fans that dismiss "Future Baby Mama" are the same ones that praise say "Under The Cherry Moon" because of its adventurous take on the ballad...They can even deal with "The Beautiful Ones" because of the rock edge the song in injected with...But they can't deal with "Do Me Baby" or even an "Adore" because it's straight ahead R&B that is aimed at Prince's core audiance who championed the man in the first place...Very interesting indeed...

Basically, its in the mode of an "Insatiable"....And if you didn't like that song, it is what it is...And I dig that...As Sly once said Different Strokes baby...

Murph...I must say I agree on some of what you have stated. I mean most of us know, that a portion of the title of the song is a term used in the American Black community amongst our youth, but regardless of that, the message in the song can be understood by fans across all racial lines. Ironically, the title of the song did catch everyone's attention and became a topic of discussion, as I believe some fans were a wee bit taken aback by the term used by Prince, but most people get it. I like the song, reminds me of songs sung by groups like the Delfonics/Stylistics..true R&B style.

As far as the phrase "Baby Mama" I think because of it's overuse and degrading way the phrase was portrayed by shows in the media like Jerry Springer, the old Ricki Lake shows, Maury Povich, etc., which pretty much assisted in adding more negativity to the phrase, besides it being used within the Black Community, may be some, but not entirely the reasons why many, especially Black Females, don't care for the phrase too much. In "Future Baby Mama" Prince gives the phrase a slightly different, more positive tone.....and that's just my 2 cents.

OK - after many listens now...this tune is one bad-ass song.

1. It always amazes me when he can take an odd title and make it sound cool
2. His vocals are sick - full, falsetto full effect and smooooth
3. Any1 notice at 2:42 the comparisons to Thieves In The Temple - niiice
4. He is the master of the Linn! (JT aint got sh*t on P and I love End of All Time cause its soooo Prince inspired)
5. I believe that is Wendy accompanying Prince at the end (maybe or just all P!)
6. Overall instrumentation is excellent - P rockin the MFing bass
7. Love how most peeps r diggin this joint! peace

Sounds like a mix between I Hate U 2 Thieve in the Temple 2 Scandalous

Nice job P - cant wait 4 Planet Earth!
The greatest live performer of our times was is and always will be Prince.

Remember there is only one destination and that place is U
All of it. Everything. Is U.

Heard it for the 1st time.
True, it does feel like "When 2 R In Love"
But the torrid eroticism of the young adult Prince is now supplanted with his middle-age calm. I don't mean to sound negative though. Take it or leave it, this is the sound of Prince thinking loud as a man who has passed 40. You can actually hear his contentment through the lilting (and thoroughly infectious) melody of the verses (Chaka and Rufus's Sweet Thing might have been an inspiration for this song). It is however the song that comes closest to the best of his 80's ballads. The instrumentation (Linn and bass parts), at least, points to that direction, and not the 90's as previously noted. And one of his best vocals in a while. It may be the best one sung in falsetto since Journey to the Center of your Heart. His trademark harmonies which harken back to that first track from his first album are especially more evident here than with most of his recent R & B output. A lot of us prefer his more adventurous side, his unpredictable tendencies and (sometimes) excesses, but this is short and sweet Prince with just about everything in their right place. And it does deliver.

And thankfully the spoken parts are not "rapped".
This is not space-age electronic (and badly produced) or JB funkified (with synthetic horns) or anemic pop-rock (and Watchtower peddling) or impostured hip-hop (and ridiculous "rapping") or Stax-influenced (or coitus interruptus) or Latin-tinged (or lame excuse to use Sheila) Prince.
It's just good old Prince, period.

Anxiety

they're playing a "bootleg" version of the song on 3121.com, and now that i've heard it, i feel kinda "eh" about it. and it's not necessarily a bad "eh" or a good "eh"...just kinda, you know...shrug of my shoulders, slight smile, raised eyebrows..."eh."

i get the "i hate u" comparisons. though this song is really sugary and fluffy, which is fine, and it's something only prince can do, but it's pretty interchangeable. one kinda okay thing i thought about this song is that it would be right at home on the "girl 6" soundtrack.

maybe it's a grower for me, i dunno. or maybe i'm not into the flouncey mid-tempo prince stuff as much as other people are.

shrug "eh."
