Has anyone ever been offended by a Prince lyric?

Well, simple question--any religious types in here? Or have any woman been offended by a lyric he did that they thought was sexist of degrading?

I get offended when he changes the lyrics to old songs to fit his current beliefes.

The Cross/The christ.

When he sings "23 scriptures in a one night stand" on the Rave2000 DVD.

Etc.

Annoyed is not the word you are after is it. These lyrics offended me, especially after the BS of Ronnie Talk to Russia.

All the names in Family Name that are quoted are Jewish.

Graffiti Bridge.

The Christ.

"Flying upon the wings of the New Translation": do the sufferers of Jehovah realise they cowtow to a religion that only has space in their heaven for 144,000 souls, no more, no less. The others go where? He once said "God is inside all of us, he just wants to come out to play"...which ones does he want to play with now Prince? ... that's really offensive.

"in paradise on Earth"

Phew! LET ME IN! OH PLEASE!

Good God. At least the Catholics have a heaven with a bit of Liberace. For funs sake. Was this a FYI in an "Oh you should know this", an actual FYI or a sarcastic FYI...purleassse let it be sarcastic otherwise you are condemned to live your life on THIS earth forever AND believe it's paradise...your god is laughing behind his hand.

Bambi, but forunately he came back on this in Annastecia. I really didn't like him starting to play this on the Nude tour though as soon as Lois Lane joined it. (one of the leadsingers is a (very good looking) lesbian).

Big Tall Wall, locking up your woman???

I really don't like a lot of the lyrcs on TRC but the problem with this album is that the music is so great...

Finally, I think Ronnie Talk to Russia and Free are far too one-sided and lack all self-reflection. He made up for it in 'America' though which was, strangely enough, labelled patriotic, which it is clearly not...

Hmm i 2 cringe when i hear that song ... not because of Prince's assert with the topic but the topic itself ... abuse is an inhumane action of detriment sad I also must say P’s push with religion & racial beliefs ... well it all brushes me different ways ... not 4 the good or the bad ... I love that he is a pillar of opinion. I just have 2 stop and think more often when it comes 2 his music ... which is moreso rewarding (in the long run) ... but sometimes my thinking becomes 2 rock solid (non shakable) and that lures my mind away from the enjoyment of the melody; the physical component of the song. Which ironically means that I dont get the whole effect (& that Prince is a clever pistol hehe ... u never know when where & how hes gonna hit yah!) But that is partly my fault now isnt it .. lol ... u know what they say ... music ... ‘its a blessing and a curse.”

Aww hell ... I always admired the fact that P’s songs were like filters of his mind ... no matter what the message ... things remain open ... so many outlets ... so MUCH time biggrin yay!

u gotta fight 4 ur right 2 eeeddiiittt ... (stupid yes but the song is stuck in my head)

Some of the lyrics on TRC are offensive, but I think they are meant to be.

I was also offended when I heard him say God Bless Canada on the One Mo Jam cd.
Not that it's not a good thing to Bless Canada.
But, I have never heard him say anything about the victims of 9-11 and has he ever said God Bless America at one of his shows? He has lived in the US all his life and is an American citizen. (Not to mention a rich one.)

It depends whether you believe that music is meant to just entertain ... or to entertain AND make you think.

Genuine artistic expression will often be shocking.

The FYI wasn't meant to be sarcastic or anything, I was just trying to point to a statement of fact about what the JW's believe, sorry if it offended.

The whole paradise on earth thing is what the JW's believe. the idea being that after armageddon, when all evil is wiped out, then all those who followed their beliefs will be resurrected. They believe that god is the all powerfull being and so the idea that he can restore the earth to a paradise is not far fetched. What you are left with is a healthy planet full of people worshipping god and living forever with peace and love according to his law. Is that not effectively heaven?

These aren't my beliefs but I did look into more than one religion while I was doing some searching, so I do know a bit about what I am posting here.

Cool. The thing is Prince used to be inclusive in his spirituality. His is not any longer...or rather, if he is a true JW the he cannot be inclusive of those who are non-believers. This is a sad state of affairs and one that I wish he would change. Me, I'm not really religious, but the notion that you can have a faith system that precludes love for all, or love4oneanother - to put it another way, strikes me as a poor religion and one that should be poked with a big stick. As a consequence this offends me.
