The guest appearances are nice, but I want to hear Prince. that's how i feel too, unless it's an aftershow. i always go into those knowing that we'll get whatever or whomever prince feels like throwing on a stage. though starting with the vanguard jam and moving on into the 3121 gigs, i feel like there's been an "aftershow-ization" of prince's main (pre-aftershow) concerts, and now the aftershows have become even MORE nebulous. | |

Prince & Larry playing those old songs is part showmanship--giving the first timers what they want.
I have to believe we're in the minority being people who have seen Prince 5 plus times since 1998. Many of them have never seen tham play before. Most people would say "I can't believe they didn't play Purple Rain or Thankyou... But I also think that Prince always talks about leaving the old material behind and many of us wish he'd do just that. He's the one who can't let go in the end. When he barely played anything from Emancipation (and any following album) it felt like he was admitting that he didn't think it was as good as the old stuff. Funny thing is, I think the new stuff goes over much better live than it did on the album (Life of the Party is a good example) and Sign o the Times (at the Musicology show) was pretty dull live, I thought. It also shows that Prince must be pretty bored with the old stuff that he rarely plays the whole thing. If you're going to do the same old stuff, I'd prefer Bruce's way of giving his all and singing the whole thing and jamming on it a minute, rather than the rapid shifting of gears that Prince does.
