When Will We Be Paid... is awesome

I just relistened to this complete reworking and remake of the old song... and it is so full of the stuff that makes Prince stand out.

I was listening to Songs in The Key of Life earlier, for the past 3 days, and this was a nice slap of Prince style.

Agreed! Great vocals, guitar, drum track. This came together with U Make My Sun Shine - great release!

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you. I 've been waitng for someone else to speak up for this song. I first heard of it when Prince did the Musicology concert and had to hunt it down for 2 years, finally found it at Amazon. He sang it alone on his acoustic set, That song is unforgettable! biggrin

I prefer the upbeat version The Staple Singers did but thats not to say Princes
version isnt good.
Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!
woot!

It's so powerful, you've got to SEE him sing it, I heard a strong Black man in the audience shaking his head saying it moved him to tears, Awesome

Agreed. Fantastic! And a completely different style to the original (which I love, but only tracked down after hearing Prince's).

I was lucky enough to see it live at his small venue Hit n Run tour. With the same full blown production style.

I'm jealous, LOL. I wish he'd sung it when he came here on the Musicology tour. I love that song. cool

It sounds too plastic to me. I kind of like the vocals, but it just falls into the whole "My Medallion", "U Make My Sun Shine" category.

Shame too. The song itself is it's generations version of "Strange Fruit" by Billie Holiday to some extent, and I really wanted to like it.

The little touches like his gentle "kooom, koooom" back up vocals as it builds at the beginning, and the completely compressed, hard, stop start bassnotes on the main rhythm are so good. This mix shows the skills!

I've been saying that "When Will We Get Paid" and "When I Lay My Hands On U" are two of the most underrated Prince songs EVER. If didn't help that neither were released on an album properly. These two songs would've fit perfectly together on the same album.

Yep. 2 not-so-plastic songs in a time of too many too-plastic releases.
