the video only aired once during Live AID, but people didn't care about his song, no one heard it or talked about it, they only were only really aware of the "We Are The World" hit single and video, which they were told, Prince refused to be in ... so it became a scandal that led to a lot of backlash after the success of Purple Rain.

People (erroneously) thought Prince was not only uncharitable, but also violently self important. (violently because of photographers getting roughed up).

£40,000-a-month Hollywood home by covering it with purple lines and his personalised 'Prince' symbol.

He was also accused of daubing '3121', the title of his new album, on the house and installing a monogrammed carpet - also in his beloved purple - in the master bedroom.

His landlord, NBA star Carlos Boozer, lodged a lawsuit against the singer in January.

But the star's lawyers insisted Boozer had collected his rent without complaining about the colourful additions.

the whole "we are the world/bodyguard" fiasco created a negative image that is still in the minds of many mainstream adults that were aware back in the 80's (even if they don't remember why, they have this vibe of Prince being a selfish arrogant recluse)... other than that, I can't think anything that has affected him the way a scandal does.
