International Lover

I just got my 20th Prince CD: 1999. The whole CD is awesome, but I particularly would like to devote this to International Lover and to all who appreciate this song.

I totally love his slow songs, and this one ranks up there with the best of them. Another thing I love it for besides it being a slow song is its humor. The Prince International Airlines thing is FUNNY AS HELL. His execution of the narration of that was hella cool. So APPRECIATE.

Btw, does anyone else think that this CD is a really quiet, or is just recent presses of it? I had to turn it waaaay up.

Definitely agree.International Lover is outstanding! As 4 volume,I only listen 2 Prince's music turned WAAAY up!

International Lover is a nice song but it´s a bit too funny to be taken seriously as a ballad, IMO....
Reminds me a bit of Do Me Baby when it comes to melodramatic climaxes and weird monologues .

I love International LOver and got 1999 only two years ago. So it's kind of still "new" to me. I don't find the volume to be low, though.

Love that song, it's one of the sexiest things he's ever done, the whole album is great!

International Lover is a great tune - as is everything on 1999. One of my fave P ballads (okay, there are lots of "fave ballads")

The volume is okay, I think (at least louder than SOTT ), but as a whole I miss the "punch" - especially on DMSR --> PRINCE NOW REMASTER YOUR CATALOGUE!!!

This song is YUMMY!!!!

Definately one of his best slow jams. That one back to back with "Do Me Baby" was pure bedroom music.

This is one of those Prince songs that touch me in a very special way. Every time I listen to it, I drift into this soothing state, and then, I have this lusty grin until the end of the song. He's so clever in using the airline metaphor.

Oh boy. My parents got me "1999" for my 14th birthday. They should have payed attention. I don't think they know what they did.

"International Lover" remains one of my absolutely favorite Prince songs, maybe even my favorite of all time. The imagery in it just fascinates me. I also think it's just too sexy, even though one of my best friends laughs at him saying "a few turbulents" instead of "a little turbulence" or whatever. I like it so much, I can't even get mad!

OH man... years ago I made an all-Prince sex mix tape, 90 minutes, with International Lover at the very end. Then my girl (at the time) and I put it on, and made a deal that neither of us was allowed to () until he did, at the end of this song.

I recommend everyone do this immediately.

The song was originally intended to be released by Morris and The Time. It was tracked in Studio 2 at Sunset Sound on Thursday, January 14 1982. Prince was very busy working on songs for The Time (in fact The Walk was also being dubbed that same day). Additional songs touched on that week include Colleen,
Gigolos Get Lonely Too, Bold Generation (unreleased song) and Wild and Loose.

Two days later, Morris and Prince were in the studio working on overdubs for International Lover, but according to my sources, Prince didn't seem completely satisfied with Morris' vocals and kept his own.

That may give you a little background about a great song that ALMOST ended up on someone else's album.

It used to be my favourite song from 1999 (nowadays it's Something In The Water)!

I still love it!
