Well, that's part of the problem with Prince. He seems like he's always wanted to be famous, but on his own terms, and that's just not possible.

He wants people to love him, but he doesn't want the extra attention when he's in public. He wants people to hear his music, but he resents them criticizing songs they don't enjoy.

You can't have it all, Prince! If you want the money and love, you have to accept the loss of privacy and all the gossip.

Actually, I think Prince is just a complete control freak. He needs to control things, and I'd imagine it frustrates the hell out of him that he can't control his fans the way he has his different bands and girlfriends.

I think Prince has deep issues. Deep down, he probably fears feeling vulnerable, as control freaks always do.

I was recently thinking that falling off the stage at JB's concert probably solidified the need to control every situation.

The dude has seriously deep issues, but he goes way overboard with the eye-contact shit!
You're right about P and control, right on the money, however without the Fam-friend-fans of his , he would never have a fo

I recently watched a nature special that instructed "do not ever look a gorilla in the eye."

Shouldn't Prince have at least the same rights that a gorilla has?

Like I said, Prince does not have the right to have anyone instruct anybody to not look at him when addressing him. That's a basic human right. If I am doing my job and part of my job is to address him (ex:to ask if he needs anything). I am going to look straight into his eyes and ask HIM, not anyone else. He is not God, nor is he (real) royalty. If he was royalty I still wouldn't go for that crap, just like I would wouldn't bow to a king or queen. I bow to no one but God

and actually, I know someone who worked for him and they were instructed to not look at him when talking to him which is the truth and a ridiculous demand

I know I'm stumbling over details here but this story didn't say specifically about not to look at him while addressing him...that is something your friend told you...so I can see why you keep inserting it here. Either way, I'm not saying it's cool for him to do so but he has every right to do and say as he pleases just as you or I have every right to say screw you and look right at him. biggrin

I don't know what part of the story you're reading, but the author of this thread said "My friend said that Prince's handler cautioned everyone on the airline to not only NOT talk to him, but to avoid eye contact with him altogether" What does that mean to you? He/She was talking about their friend, the flight attendant, who was working on the flight. Flight attendants ADDRESS and LOOK AT the passengers they are assisting. It's part of their job. My response to that was "If I am doing my job and part of my job is to address him (ex:to ask if he needs anything). I am going to look straight into his eyes and ask HIM, not anyone else." So, based on the story posted by the author of this thread, if Prince were to ask for a blanket or something to drink, the flight attendant could not look in his eyes or speak to him while assisting him because, afterall, everyone was CAUTIONED to NOT talk to him and to avoid eye contact. They didn't say it was ok in certain circumstances. Hopefully you've been on a flight and know what flight attendants do

I don't interpret it that way. What it meant to me was don't go outta your way to stare at him or address him for no reason. I don't feel it meant if Prince asks you for a drink or a blanket you can't look at him or respond to him.

Sorry.

I honestly think you put much more detail in it than it was. You interpreted "Look at" as "stare" and "talk to" as "omg, I love you" fanatic talk. Knowing what I know about Prince's demands, your interpretation is off. There was a band a some years ago (I forgot their name) that said, on a nationally televised interview, they were going to work with Prince, but left the studio, before he arrived, when they were instructed to not look at him or make eye contact with him. You can try to give him the benefit of the doubt to rationalize his irrational behavior if you want, but we all know he's an ass when it comes to this. He makes this demand through other people. I don't think he has personally told anyone that himself though.

I feel you put much more detail into it than it was too. You interpreted "look at" as even when he asks you for something and "talk to" as in you aren't even allowed to do your normal job. You interpreted me incorrectly with the "talk to" means "omg I love you fanatic talk" btw. I'm sure on many occasions he's been asked for a photo or an autograph, which could also be what they are trying to avoid. Apparently you know more about Prince's demands than me and I'm not the type of person to tell anyone their interpretation of something is "off"....just different than mine so...I'm sure we could continue to argue about this forever but it's apparent your opinion is the only opinion that's correct and that's that so... In a way I can sort of understand the request. There may be days where he just wants to get from point A to point B without having to deal with a bunch of people stopping him to say hi, or ask for an autograph, or chit chat with him. etc... If he's not keen on socializing, so be it. They could have been more generic about the request and simply stated "don't bother Prince".

But they were specific because Prince really didn't want anyone even looking him in the eyes. Prince seems to want to decide when he's a part of society when he's outside, and you can't do that. The second you step outside, you're responsible for behaving like a civilized, decent person.

I never said my opinion was the only correct one, but honestly you and maybe a few others seem to want to rationalize his bullshit because you're looking for a valid reason for him to be an asshole. It's like you can't accept he is an asshole. Maybe you love him that much. The story wasn't about asking for autographs or anything that simple. He's simply an asshole or has some deep social problems that he needs to work out on his own. So, you have your opinion and I have my facts. I have no problem with you disagreeing me

Recently a friend told me this story. I was looking for the thread "Has Prince ever been rude to anyone in public" but couldn't find it.

So, my friend is a flight attendant for one of the 'top five' airlines in the nation, and said he got to ride with Prince sometime ago (yes, Prince was in first class). Of course, I was all questions: "What does he look like in person? Did he have attitude? Was he nice?" My friend said that Prince's handler cautioned everyone on the airline to not only NOT talk to him, but to avoid eye contact with him altogether.

I can't think of anything that would make me want to make eye contact with someone MORE except being told that I can't! Prince, again you are a genius.

Does anyone have any stories like this?

It's turned into a running joke in the bar I work at. I'll be in the middle of any number of my daily tirades about something and my customers will go: "Don't look directly at Prince!" Then, I have to look down, block our line of vision with my palm, and say "I'm sorry Mr. Prince" before I finish my story! It's fun!

Ever played gossip? ….I whisper in your ear, “look at me when you talk to me”. You tell someone, they tell someone, etc, etc…. the last person repeats what they think they heard…they say, “Look and see the man walk and pee.”

…My point is whenever ‘he’ says what ‘she’ says what my ‘friend’ says, you just can’t be sure what was really said. If something happens to you – ‘you’ would be the best person to retell the story most accurately. Perhaps in this case the ‘friend’ should be the one to share what actually happened.

Fan is actually short for the word fanatic. Unlike the ‘fans’ on this site, some fanatics are not ‘good’ people and occasionally in public some people are not fans at all. Some people are just crazies and actually have bad intentions.

I’ve been with Prince when the public went crazy. We all feared for our lives. It’s hard to be a Star on earth. Prince has had to take some extreme measures just to survive.

I was with Prince once when a fan looked at him and then grabbed and pulled out a hand full of his hair, blood trickled down the side of his face…

Sometimes we read or hear about Prince’s strange actions without knowing what strange occurrence he was reacting to…

If you hear or read something strange about Prince, first consider the source. Then consider whether it is gossip or a statement of fact. Remember our Superstar Prince is only human, flesh and blood, mortal and flawed as we all are. And then consider that there are at least two sides to every story and Prince’s side of the story is surely a classified mystery…

…good gossip can sometimes be the source of great fun… if I were in your bar I would definitely have to say : "Don't look directly at Prince!"…

In a way I can understand Prince very well. Also other very popular people witch have a lot to do with publicum, like to do concerts.
There are so many people wanting to look in to your eues, I believe that can make a one become tired, becouse of a lost of energy. I'm almost sure, the most of those people, call them Stars, would love it to can take more pesonal contact to theyr fans. But there are many and you can't make it all them right, or you'll probably end out-sucked some how.

Some artist does like to wear dark glasses, and some ordinary people too, to avoid that and protect themselves.

The emotional sensible empathy of each individual is defining on how you much you decide to can take and how much to give, not loosing you completly.

Having had physical contact with Mr. Prince, (hey, a "high five" is considered physical contact in this comparison...k?... K.) I would like to say, that I did NOT have eye contact with that man, Mr. Prince, but of course, you must define eye contact.

Of course, this is totally based on my perception..., of course, he may have had eye contact with me... razz
