He's probably shy and feels uncomfortable with it. But I still think it's kind of rude to demand it.

Often I find with celebrities with large entourages though, is that a lot of the time they have hangers on that demand really weird things and get pedantic and rude to staff of hotels, planes, venues etc. and then the stars themselves seem quite easy going. A lot of the time it can be entourages on an ego trip making things up to give them something to do and a sense of self importance.

I've heard the Prince/eye-contact thing before from several people though, so it might actually be at his request lol

this is so true... i work in Tribeca in NY and Will Smith was shooting a movie in the neighborhood recently and on our luchbreak we would go outside to watch and a couple of us went over to his trailer hoping to get a better view of him and one his handlers was so nasty.. telling a girl in the group that who asked if she could take a picture with him(thats not going to happen) and when will came out he hugged her and took pictures with all of us

-----
Could be any of these reason. We just never know what is really going on.

Because he grows tired of people staring him down like he's a caged animal?

Gemini mind games. F**king with people and laughing his ass off

His staff triping out and making outragous demands without his knowledge.

funny how some of you idol worshippers can justify someone demanding to take away the rights of another -- i'll look anywhere i please, thank you very much -- now if we're talking harassment, that's another story -- but Prince and his cronies best shut up if they even think to ask someone to give up an ounce of their freedom as a God-ordained human being

as litigious as amurrica has become, i wouldn't be surprised if someone would try and pass off staring at someone as harrassment and try to take them to court. disbelief

geesh...does that make you feel better?
I don't really see anyone trying to "justify" it....maybe just explain it or rationalize it. It's not like it's fact or anything.

I actually had the chance to be in a situation one time where I was in VIP with some friends, and one of my favorite songs came on. Naturally, I started dancing....
After a while I realized I was the only one dancing, and that Prince was sitting there watching me- so I froze. There was awkward eye contact when he realized that I realized he was watching me.

I felt like Elaine from "Seinfeld" with Prince watching me dance, but he turned his head! (He probably couldn't believe anyone could actually dance like that!)

I just walked off the floor and sat down....

No...what's funny is how you name callers always talk about your rights being respected...well isn't it Prince's right to ask not to be stared at. if he doesn't feel like being stared at?

Ever notice how dogs hate eye contact too?

Anyway though I love getting people's reaction when I give them 100% attention while they speak. I think it throws most people off balance because looking someone in the eyes requires a certain amount of honesty.

**** Dog hate eye contact bcuz they interpretate it as u were challenging them. Infact if a dog is attacking u the main thing 2 avoid is the contact eye.
Therefore if u have 2 train a dog u MUST LOOK at ur eyes bcuz he has 2 understand that u r his leader.

I dont feel uncomfortable if a person looks at my eyes. I dont like when ppl avoid it.

Prince looked at me straightly in my eyes.... He has deep light brown eyes...

I know that's true with cats. Staring wide-eyed is an unfriendly gesture in cat language. They usually steer clear with that. Now squinting the eyes, if any, has the opposite effect. It can draw them closer. I prefer dogs, myself.
Prince is different, he's more closely related to the human species, and they tend to be a little more complicated.

U must b very sure of yourself to give anyone 100% of yourself!

I've heard the same about Luther Vandross & Dylan, as they walk to the stage they want everyone to turn around. I assume they don't want people to see them do a quick line.

In Prince's case, I assume it's because people just stare & stare at him, and it drives him nuts.

Yes, he made his own bed & now he's sleeping in it, and yes he's kind of insane, but I can't imagine how crazy that kind of stardom & attention would make me too.

I don't think he's crazy to request it, I think the airline's crazy for enforcing it with their employees--they don't work for Paisley Park, after all!

I always thought celebrities wore dark glasses to avoid making eye contact. Thats a lot simpler than requesting people not to look at you. shrug Instead of all the drama in the original post, why not just wear them.

2004 Backstage -Target Center, Minneapolis- Ladies First Tour-Beyonce, Missy and Alicia.

A few of us were backstage as part of Alicia Keys' meet and greet with fans, and Prince and his bodyguard (bald dude with the attitude) walked by. Some kids from a radio station contest were back there waiting on Alicia too. They yelled out "Hey Prince!", "What's up man!"... very innocently, and excited at the same time, and Aaron, bodyguard dude stared those kids down like they had called P out of his name.... I thought it was so foul... Prince just kept walking, no wave, no smile, no nothing.... 30 minutes later Alicia came in to the meet and greet room nice as can be... I hope she doesn't turn into this anti-fan person as her career goes on.... sad A little humility goes a long way.

Being stared at is one thing. Demanding that you not be looked at when being addressed or looked in the eyes when being talked is a power-trip. I look everyone in the eye when I speak to them. I wish somebody would tell me I am not allowed to look at them when I am SPEAKING to them.

I used to work at a concert venue here in Detroit and everytime he did a show, he ordered the heat off, so the venue would be freezing. Also, his people would instruct us to not speak to him directly, but never said anything about looking at him.

Well...being a Sexy Beautiful One myself...I can understand what Prince must go through. I get stared at relentlessly and I'm far from famous, just fine as hell and when I'm not in the mood for it, it can really annoy the hell out of me!

Now when I think of how that's magnified when it's concerning Prince, I really can't blame him. I can't make special requests for people to stop staring at me but I damn sure would if I could! cool

Recently a friend told me this story. I was looking for the thread "Has Prince ever been rude to anyone in public" but couldn't find it.

So, my friend is a flight attendant for one of the 'top five' airlines in the nation, and said he got to ride with Prince sometime ago (yes, Prince was in first class). Of course, I was all questions: "What does he look like in person? Did he have attitude? Was he nice?" My friend said that Prince's handler cautioned everyone on the airline to not only NOT talk to him, but to avoid eye contact with him altogether.

I can't think of anything that would make me want to make eye contact with someone MORE except being told that I can't! Prince, again you are a genius.

Does anyone have any stories like this?

It's turned into a running joke in the bar I work at. I'll be in the middle of any number of my daily tirades about something and my customers will go: "Don't look directly at Prince!" Then, I have to look down, block our line of vision with my palm, and say "I'm sorry Mr. Prince" before I finish my story! It's fun!

Well I got to holla bullshit on this one. I am sorry but I have heard this rumor for years and yet every show I go to. I manage to talk to security especially those near the stage and they say he is the perfect gentlemen!!

Hell one guy said Prince came out and called him "Big Man" I mean what do you say to that.

In a way that burst my bubble a bit. I always loved the eccentric nature of telling people not to look at you. Its just funny to me.

Peace
