Oh god I used to call that Prince Family hotline like every day. I was in college back then, in my dorm room, bored, and would dial it constantly LOL.

She changed the name of the newsletter for a while, and would not use Prince's name at all throughout it, but instead a Ø

Just to let you guys know for future reference, that I've added some new uploads of 'Controversy' magazine covers, as well as giving fanzines in general their own section just to make things a little easier for browsing - hope this helps.

I went for job interview with a proposed music/current affairs magazine based in London... I got the job, but the magazine was pulled before launch... hey-ho...

I'll always remember the boss's reaction when I told him I used to write for a magazine about Prince... "A magazine about just one musician?" I was about to reply when one of the other journalists on the interview board lightly touched him on arm and said, "Yeah... There's enough for a whole magazine about Prince..." Nothing more was said.

It was a lovely moment, and a testimony to Prince's cache at the time.

Hey Simon ...how's it going?

I remember that Emancipation launch sitting in an office and having to review 3 discs worth of music before it got released.. IT WAS A BLAST!!!

The essence of The Interactive Experience continues online...all be it under a slightly different name - The Dawn Experience - and new management... Peter's still keeping a low profile but he's out there.. wink The age of the Internet dismisses the need for hard copy news of P.

I remember how great your contributions to the fanzine were to read... hope you could do something for our site in the future.

Keep it touch...

You know who.

I would like point out that this bit is wrong It was run by a guy called David Powell from Walsall. David tried his best in producing the magazine (Dream Nation Ran for around 2 yrs) all by himself with help from like minded people he even did some Prince Partys which I went to and had fun even Madhouse music went along those where the days, but like Chris Dawson both where charming and owe me money for non events.

Eileen Did well on the MPLS convention of 91 (D&P) was released whilst we were in MPLS and we all had limos to take us to the Glam slam for the release party BLISS.

and whilst im here Didnt Chris Leave Controversy to set up the Revolution after an argument with Eileen?
[Edited 11/17/06 4:55am]

I stand corrected. I read on here that Chris Dawson was involved in Dream Nation but my information was obviously incorrect.
But all that means is that 2 different guys took my money and ran...

You're on Cross purposes chaps

The second mag that Dawson ripped people off for was "The Truth", not "Dream Nation" - I have heard a couple of stories of David owing people money for subs but not to the level of Dawson.

I come across someone that Dawson owes money to on almost a monthly basis.

Pete has no involvement in any Prince publications or websites sadly. His musical tastes have unfortunately taken a severe nosedive as in the last two weeks he's seen both Christina Aguilera and George Michael in concert eek

He does however seem to still know every bit of news and gossip that's going on in the P world.

I see. Aguilera and Micheal, eh? Well, you can't have everything.

Does he still regret getting rid of all his Prince stuff, or did he really keep copies?

Sadly, I've lost contact with Peter. I get emails every now and again from Ray, but I've not spoken to/emailed Peter for years now... far too long, in fact... But then, I wouldn't have the first idea about how to contact him.

So, when are you going over to get up close and personal with Prince in Vegas?

Oh, those WERE the days!

I met so many friends through Controversy and Diana Dawkins newsletter - many pen pals and started LoveSexyDC through those connections at the DAWN of the Internet age - early 90s.

Hey anyone else here an EARLY AOL user - when there were only like 10,000 of us total and we had weekly Sunday night chat room talks? I used to LIVE for those chats lasting well into the early hours here on the East Coast.

I seem to remember it was around the same time. Vikki was pretty pissed off at what had happened and closed up if I remember correctly.

Confession.

I used to help write a Prince magazine in the mid-90s in the UK. It was called the Interactive Experience.

I had tremendous fun doing it, may have ruffled a few feathers... not sure... BUT it did allow me access to some amazing people and times, especially during the Emancipation launch.

Ahhhh, such memories.

I used to get the Interactive Experience, used to love it arriving in the post and reading it in one go without putting it down like a right geek!

Some leaflets come with it advertising videos, tapes, etc (if you know what I mean!) so I used to get a lot of stuff from a lady called Linda.

Cant remember the lads name who ran it (may have Peter?), I spoke to him once and he was pissed off after something happened with Prince or Paisley Park and he was selling his collection, think the magazine stopped then.

so how did it ruffle some feathers?

There was another fanzine round the same time run by a guy called Ray in London called Dawn something, that was also quite good

I remember Dawn - that was ace. I also wrote an article for Interactive Experience and then it folded. Call myself a writer!

Scotsman1999

It's great to read the recollections of you all, in a more innocent time!

I remember the Prince shop in Otley being on the television back in '86 and almost fainting with excitement. I was too young to go there really, but it had this huge Parade cut-out of Prince just inside the door and the stock was floor-to-ceiling. Unbelievable. I had cause to drive past Otley just a couple of days ago and it instantly brought back memories!

I also subscribed to Controversy and have most issues. The centrefolds were especially treasured and normally ended up on my bedroom wall.

Remember they used to trade bootleg tapes via that mag? There were regional 'co-ordinators' up and down the country, and I was gagging to get hold of unreleased Prince material. So much so that when there was a delay with my first tape, I complained to this person and told them, 'Get your act together' in a probably very irate letter.
They subsequently told me to sod off and that I wasn't getting anything. I wrote to Eileen, who asked us both to calm down, but it was soured for me and I never ended up getting any tapes! Arrgh..

Prince must really have been a right dipstick to alot of people for them to go off him. If there was any justice, Eileen Murton would be the grand dame of Prince fans by now.

There was something so exciting about getting your news via a magazine or snippets caught over the airwaves. The Internet just isn't the same. I know it's 'better' but I can't help but feel nostalgic. I only wish I'd known other Prince fans around that time.. Despite the magazines, it was still a very singular experience to be a Prince fan unless you made an effort. At least now I have the Org, bless it's cotton socks. smile
