"WOOOOO HAH HOOO HOOOO HOOOO.HOOOOO y'all wannna sing that say it"
The Revolution were very mechanical but they sure as hell showed the world what they were made of 1 year later during the Parade Hit and Runs...smile but back 2 the video. It was 21 yrs ago.How many other concerts then did ne1 witness or watch then that kicked ass like that????
None I would imagine.Even then it showed just how far ahead Prince was at the time
u know u want 2...so do it

to try and re-create the video for WDC. Silly as all get out because that part of the original video is what made it oh so 80's high-cheese.

the thing that bugs me the most is that they did the whole mirror effect throughout the entire performance, as opposed to just that small part in the video.

i remember when i saw the "wdc" video for the very first time when i was a kid. i thought the mirror part was the coolest thing in the world. touched

surely there must be a way of reverting that back to full stage view should they ever decide to re-release on DVD? Afterall it's just some post-processing crap, right? And How i wish they would re-release it remastered on to DVD. I could finally put my double vhs to a long overdue rest! And P has not yet matched the solo of Purple Rain or the energy of LGC since!

Remember at the end when Appolonia, Jerome, Brooks and the whole entourage came out and did that funny looking Mamba Shuffle line dance? I crack up everytime I see it.

Yeah, the split screen mirror effect of When Doves Cry was added for the video
release. When it was originally broadcast live it didn't have that effect.

I used to rent this VHS all the time, then one day the store closed and I never even got a chance to buy it.

The lesson is: If you really want it, don't return it! biggrin

clapping I'm glad someone brought this up! Back when the video came out, we were just happy to have a product with Prince on it. Forget about criticizing it. That wouldn't happen! lol

Aside from the corny dialogue and cheesy theatrics, the thing I found most disappointing was the sound mixing. What?...did the sound tech fall asleep at the board?
1) Turn BrownMark's mic up on 1999 so we can hear him sing his part!
2) Turn Wendy & Lisa's mics down whenever they're off key! Don't ruin the chorus!
3) What's up with that loud train whistle during the encore free for all that sounded out of place from the rest of the music?
4) I felt the bass could have been turned up more in some of the songs especially on Possessed (after all, it is a James Brown tribute). shrug
5) Prince's guitar solo at the end of LGC couldn't be heard!

OK perhaps a silly question but when watching this video I get the impression that there is an audience behind the stage (ala LoveSexy). I would need to watch again but it looks this way when Prince is climbing up the stairs and running along the top balcony thing.

I assume this was a standard setup and just a trick of the light?

However, overall this concert highlights how weak the Revolution was as a band. I know folks like to talk about the Revolution as if it was the second coming, but I am sorry, their chops were not on the level of the bands that preceeded or followed them. They did, however, serve their purpose - to garner mainstream, crossover success for Prince.

I agree. In some parts of this concert,Prince actually looks like he is bored with this band. They weren't able to keep up with him and where he wanted to go,musically, and it shows.

Someone finally said it.

People have been saying that, but the Revheads don't want to believe that Prince was just actually playing the race card even further than he had been. He, along with MJ, Lionel, TTD, Whitney and all the recording industry execs knew exactly what they were doing. And all you have to do is visit the boards on this forum to understand its impact:
Prince was better when he had the Revolution

Translation: Prince was at his best when he was surrounded by white folks and those white folks were helping to embellish his sound.

Michael is better when he's singing pop records like "Dirty Diana"
Translation: Soul singing and music sucks. Scream like a headbanger! headbang

All of TTD's albums are better than his first one

Translation: See comment above

Conclusion: (You already know)

But I digress lol

^^^Yes, there IS an audience behind the stage. While the tour was still an end stage setup (and not in the round), the shows sold so many seats that the venues even sold seats BEHIND the stage.

Nah. Most of the songs from that album have been played to death already. The tour itself definitely had some highlights. But this video is just disbelief
The promo video versions of TMWU and IWD4U/BIAS kill the versions in this video. Purple Rain needs to be retired for all eternity. Not because it's a bad song, but because the shit has gotten lame. The piano medley on this tour was not very interesting. I think the one in this video is actually one of the better ones...I guess.
[Edited 10/12/06 8:58am]

How many other albums from 1984 are you listening to? I doubt many - really, I will repeat - I doubt many. You might be listening to one-hit wonders from then, but not whole albums. If you are, I would love to see a list that is not obscure.

Having said that, this is 22 years later - and that album still holds up. It holds up better than Thriller, that's for sure. I hear at least one song from PR every day on the radio, and aside from the nostalgia that I have for the album, it still does have a certain magic to it.

Purple Rain should NOT be retired - it's one of the greatest albums of all time. Maybe you should just take a break from it for a while.

I actually taped the original broadcast off the TV (without the split screen
effect on When Doves Cry) and watched it many times that year. Then it was
announced that it was going to get an official release, and because I knew
I'd go out and buy the 'official' thing, I ended up taping over my home-
recorded version. I was kicking myself when I realised they'd stuck that
stupid split screen effect over the whole song, and I no longer had the
original. Similar thing happened a few years later with the Lovesexy live
broadcast. Though to be honest the officially released version does have the
better camera angles on the whole, but there were a few more wide shots on the
original broadcast which it would have been nice if they'd left in.
