ARRRGGG the joys of being a Prince fan.

I'm really getting tired of fake ass fans who the only songs they know are from "Purple Rain" or the countless whack ass radio stations that play the same 5 hits every so often. It's so annoying when people ask me how come Prince hasn't put anything out, and I have to explain that he has "Rainbow Children", "Musicology", etc. I guess what really frustrates me is that I know an actor who would always get invited to Prince's house for the 3121 parties yet he does not even really know that much about Prince, however I've been listening since I was 10 years old (I'm now 36) and also until recently a "lifetime" member of the NPG Music Club. I've seen Prince 9 times and have about every regular, import and "those items" were not supposed to discuss in my collection. How nice it would be for the P man to actually address his "fams" here on the site or elsewhere to let us know what is going on. What a great time it was for him to open the doors of Paisley for those kick ass Celebrations and of course the intimate Pre-Shows and After Shows on the "One Night Alone" tour. I guess I'm just as frustrated as alot of us who thought 3121 was a good album yet it seemes like he could care less about promoting it. Sorry to sound like a downer but I'm used to reading what other people write and tonight I just thought it would be good to get this off my chest.

Peace

Relax. You're in good company. I would imagine most, if not all, of the fans on this site have experienced something of the frustration you are going through.

I was lucky, when I got into Prince he was a mysterious, cool artist that people daren't criticise because that would have shown them up for the musical ignoramuses they truly were... That said, these last few years have been something of a struggle. This last year, in fact, included my first "How on earth could you possibly like him" conversation, where my 'fandom' was met with actual hostility.

I think that we just sit tight, listen to the new stuff like the good boys and girls we are and then get ready for the wave of 'he was genius', 'how on earth could WB have let him go', etc when he dies.

i would rather be someone who parties with prince wink i'm glad that you have those prince items in your collection and there's nothing wrong with that, just take good care of them. i think we should celebrate fans like yourself. i'm a newbie and i can hardly call myself a prince fan, although i am... newbie prince fans need a tag of their own.
You f*cked it up

he's not sitting on his vault.. his fans are. i'm not a music-type person, that doesn't mean that i can't recognize hip songs, when i feel like music i go straight to prince.

The internet has allowed information about Prince to span the globe in seconds, but in the old days finding out anything other than album/single release dates and tour dates was almost impossible, you got everything from music magazines. Prince was a mysterious, aloof figure who never gave interview or interacted very much with his fans.

These days, when you don't hear anything new for a mere month or 2, it causes fans a lot of frustration! Just shows how the world has changed and speeded up, we're not the patient people we used to be in the 80s!

On one level, it is kind of refreshing to see Prince go 'old school' and become that mysterious, aloof figure again where sightings and info are rare.

As far as 3121, it just shows what happens when you don't play the industry game, perhaps that is what Prince is showing us. The cream really doesn't rise to the top unless you give it a big push.

I have the same problem. I bring always the symbol on my neck so ppl ask me what it means... When I mention about Prince most of them told me: "oh yeah, I know who is him...that one of Purple Rain"... so I kindly explain that Prince went ahead and grew up as artist.....

I've been through this many times as well. One of my friends said she didn't know how I could like him, and why am I so interested in someone that hasn't been popular since the 80's. So, one night she watched him when he was on Jay Leno, not last time, the time before and she called me and said what a good song that was and he is so cute!. One time one of my bosses said "You're a Prince fan?", "I'm sorry to hear that. He doesn't know the first thing about Prince.

As I see it, there are two types of Prince fans: The kind whose favorite song is When Doves Cry (less serious fans, WITH A FEW EXCEPTIONS DONT ATTACK!) and the kind who buy "NEWS" and "The Rainbow Children" etc.

I guess casual and hardcore. cool

I can't stand casual fans who think/act like they're hardcore. mad

I am up here in NY. Only about an hour and a half from the city. And even here, I feel like I am on another planet when it comes to being a Prince fan. My close friends get it, why I dig him so much and for so long (since I was 12). But, otherwise, people look at me like I am absolutly FAR OUT. There is so much to his career, SOOOOO much history there. The fact is and has been, that I am a Prince fan....I feel him, I truely admire him. I don't always understand him but I stick with him. Those of us who really get into him in this way may never be understood either. We may also be somewhat of a mystery to everyone else.
