Prince: The Greatest Drum Programmer Ever!

Wouldn't you agree? I mean for fucking "Ballad of Dorothy Parker" alone, the man is a genius. P's beats (at least until '88) were so dope 'cuz of the details that went into them. Not to mention wheatever filters he ran the Linn thru, gave him his own drum sound. Maybe there's somebody I'm not remembering (plus Black Sparks is kickin' my ass), but who else can do that shit?

I agree. Prince is a great drummer, indeed.
So many great, innovative percussion lines.
Oh, and FIRST!

Right. That's what I said. I guess my question (since we're being all succinct n' shit) was, do you think Prince is the greatest drum programmer ever?

Word. But I think he plays a live snare over the Linn beat. Regardless it's one of the illest beats he's created. cool

He does do that alot. Not sure about Cinnamon Girl, but I know for instance he used the same kick pattern on Glam Slam that he used for Around The World In A Day. And he's fiend for that kick-snare-kick-kick-snare shit a la: If I Was Your Girlfiend, Anna Stesia, The Beautiful Ones, Erotic City, etc...

No, that would be Tom Jenkinson. But in a coherent popular context, I reckon P got more mileage out of a Linn drum machine than any producer in history. Creatively he bought the company....

Who was it that said that the true measure of a legend is when everything before you is obsolete and everything after you carries your mark? I think this is so true for P and the Linn drum machine. That's why whenever you hear it used in music today, whatever it is is automatically pegged as a Prince rip-off. Truely phenomenal when you think that there's really no other artist that has a whole INSTRUMENT implicitly associated to them.

Every Rapper & Rap Producer should really give him all the credit for what he has done 24 years ago. Everything he did in the early 1980's, really as good and really more amazing then what we hear now. For Prince do think up those detail loops & keyboard sounds are & were amazing. cool

i don't know for sure, i always imagined that his beats are always over emphasized, as if that's all that's important... i still have to find the best of him yet.

Given the thosands of samples and standard beats available over the years, prince does have a certain touch 2 his programming that sets him a part.

No. Akira Yamaoka of the Silent Hill game series has done better work with programming. Altho no one can be the best at it really, when all it is is pressing buttons. It doesn't require actual technical skill, only composing skills.
