Question for hardcore (?) fans...

Does anybody here at the org remember an interview led by mel b (melanie brown, from the spice girls) to prince back in the emancipation days ( or slightly
after emacipation)? I'm from Italy, and I distinctly remember it was aired on tv as a special on prince, and it featured questions from mel b to the "Artist".
I remember Prince to be particularly messianic ( in a sort of cult way) in that interview.

yeah, it was part of a special called "beautiful strange". it was a very scripted interview, held at paisley park if memory serves correctly, and prince was discussing his newly-formed (at the time) JW beliefs with scary spice.

I own the video and watched it recently. It was around the New Power Soul album. In my opinion, Prince was not messianic in that video nor was he discussing his newly-formed beliefs at length. They discussed a lot of things, I was taken more by the flirtations. Some of the questions might have been scripted, but there was a lot of free flow to that interview.

The bit out on the playground where Mel asked Prince to say "Romeo, Romeo let down your hair" and he first asked her if that's her hair, then starts to say it, but stops mid sentence and says "It's Rapunzel" then stops didn't seem scripted. I also found Prince staring at her butt and telling her not to cover it because brothas liked that to be quite natural.

The word association seemed scripted with regard to the words that were chosen. However, the two of them sitting on the steps and talking didn't seem scripted either. You just have to watch it for yourself and judge.

It was first aired in the UK on Channel 4. There was the interview with Mel B at Paisley Park (there was a brief bit with Prince producing the song 'Beautiful Strange' in the studio), Newpower Soul had just been released. Interspersed with it were parts of a performance of an aftershow at the Cafe de Paris featuring Larry Graham and Chaka Khan and Dougie Fresh. The video used to be available to buy from the 1800 New Funk store.

Haven't watched it for a long while, don't remember Prince being particularly messianic or dicussing his JW beliefs at any length, it was just a very simplistic non-challenging interview with Mel B fawning over him.

it wasn't necessarily prince doing a full-on witnessing thing, but he was going on about birthdays and christmas and nimrod's birthday...it seemed like he was anxious to start sharing what he'd been starting to learn, though it would be a while before "onesong" and "the christ"...this was kind of the first rumbling of all that would come in the following years leading up to 'the rainbow children', or so it seems to me. shrug

All I remember was him talking about "We're getting closer to the Truth", and laughing my ass off.

Some of you all are REALLY exaggerating the birthday/Christmas thing. It was a few seconds. They were playing the word association game. She said Christmas and he said Nimrod's birthday. She's asked what or something like that and he gave a brief response, it was not a JW diatribe. I don't get where that is coming from. They talked about music and she mentioned something about a movie and he said he would be in her movie. He said it had to be about the truth and that there was only one truth.

I wish that when someone asked a question on here, people woulddn't overstate things. It is very misleading. Again, I say to the original poster watch the interview and decide for yourself.

I actually quite like that interview. They had a good flow going
and Prince seemed like he was really having fun with her.

There are a few religious references, but he didn't whip out
a bible or anything.

It's over at housequake.com wink

It's one of the best interview he's ever done IMO, and he seemed really normal. Only that part about getting closer to the truth seemed a bit much considering it was about NPS. And of course saying he didn't write songs about sex, when he'd already said the comment about "mad sex" was a little hard to swallow.

The "interview" rolleyes if you can call it that was totally embarrasing. Mel B was like some star struck fan, all doe eyed. I watched it again a few weeks ago and it hasn't improved with time at all.

She kept saying stuff like "you're lovely you are" repeatedly, and basically agreeing with everything he said. She came across as exactly what she is a brainless, talentless idiot lol

The funniest thing was she said something, one time and he mimicked her, basically taking the piss out of her accent and she never even realised lol

To paraphrase Comic Book Guy from The Simpsons...worst interview EVER!!!
