Sign ‘O’ The Times is both an Apologue of moral behavior and an affectively sagacious metaphor for homo-erotic experimen

Sign ‘O’ The Times is both an Apologue of moral behavior as well as an affectively sagacious metaphor for homo-erotic experimentation - A commentary by AsianBomb777.

The Smiths had the Queen is dead, the Cure had Disintegration, and Paris Hilton had Paris. All great artists release that one album that will forever define the musical careers, and shape the landscape of their future albums—that one album that raises the bar so high they never seem to capture the moment ever again.

For Prince, for better or worse, that album is Sign ‘o’ The Times. A Messy, sprawling, self-indulgent, orgy of sound that triumphs in it’s brashness and brilliance as much as it stimulates the libido, and, concomitantly, the intellect. Where Morrissey ponders his self-loathing, self-pitying sexual frustrations with same-sex overtones, Prince strokes the penis of another man while playing the girl—and makes you love it! One could never imagine “Frankly Mr. Shankly” ever exposing homo-erotic yearnings nearly as brilliantly as Prince’s “IT” or “If I was Ur Girlfriend”, while turning the tables around and doing it through a supposed female embodiment of his alter-ego, Cammille. Prince wants his cunnilingus to mean something to his lesbian lover in ways that Morrissey could never understand, and probably be hospitalized if he were to receive visuals of such feasts.

But the buck does not stop for Prince with just the sexual. Through the entire experience of Sing ‘o’ The Times, there is a certain sense that yes—this man will definitely play with another man’s penis, if you simply spike his Coffee with some Starfish—but he’s going to do it while making you think about Jesus. Indubitable to all, is that Prince is obviously trying to make the two worlds make sense. He’s trying to find symmetry in the crinkled lace of his musical panties, if you will.

In attempting to make the profane divine, and the divine absolutely approbatory of his homo-erotic ponderings, Prince turns to the artistic concept which he finds refuge in—that is , Camille. Oh Camille, that part of him with the big wet vagina that expresses his feminine nature, in love with all things female, and flirting with the divine. Camille, the escutcheon veneer that shields his innermost sexual urges. He can have boy or girl, cuase Camille wants it to be so. He can talk of being girlfriends, of wanting a bucket of Squirrel Meat (homo-erotic bestial ponderings which he blames again on Camille or poor old Brother Brookes).

But does it matter that Camille is the sacrificial lamb to his innermost desire to taste the flesh of man, or to have himself a big vagina? No, of course not. Camille expresses something much more tangible than the urge to give blowjobs or cunnilingus, much more powerful than the urge to be anally probed or to invite Jesus into your bedroom—Camille expresses ideas. The whole of the Rainbow Children, Musicology, and the sonically catchy but equally empty 3121, when thrown together in all of their post-Symbol synergistic glory, simply proves that Prince doesn’t have any truly interesting ideas without Camille. The age of the cool and pimp Prince reveals an artist comfortable in his skin to some—but to me, it expresses how repressive his homosexual tendencies have become without the assistance of his favorite alter-ego and preverbal butt puppet, Camille. We need her back, now more than ever!

Thank you.

.

Wasn't this in the liner notes of the album sleeve?

I found that to be very interesting. I kinda miss Prince's imagination. He seems to be to fixated on finding the truth these days.
