Definitely happy with the purchase, especially the extended/remixes on disc 2 which I don't have.

For this release, I don't think they'd bother with telling the purchaser that this release is remastered anyway because the audience they're aiming at won't really care. It'd only be a full back-catologue re-release where they'd bother telling peeps that it's a remaster project in order to drag in the hardcore fans. This release is for the casual purchaser.
Controversy is the one track that proves that something's been done to the master tracks properly. The stereo soundscape has changed completely with the newly released version, likewise 1999 and Gett Off - those three tracks alone have now got a more obvious, far more rich 3-D sound to them compared to their original recordings. Also the 12inch of Kiss sounds unbelievably crisp, new and solid. And finally 'Sign O The Times' sounds far less tinny than it's original incantation. A simple 'normalize' wouldn't have given the track it's new almost pseudo bass-heavy sound. It's another track that has proved that this project is more than just a volume increasing, normalize exercise. And didn't T17 confirm for us that the tunes had been genuinely remastered?

The Cross was merely increased in volume for the Girl 6 project and that was really obvious (the background mastertape hiss was louder too). This time around, the master tapes have clearly been worked on and the songs on Ultimate Prince sound full and rich compared to their original releases.

The answer to the remastering debate can be found in the CD booklet. Or rather, NOT in the booklet. Every time an album is remastered, the person or company doing the remastering is credited somewhere on the CD (even if there's not a big "DIGITALLY REMASTERED!" sticker on the front). For example, The Eurythmics 2005 remaster of Savage states, "Remastered by Ian Cooper, Metropolis Studios, London.” Similarly, Peter Gabriel's Shaking the Tree was "remastered by Tony Cousins at Metropolis London" and Echo & The Bunnymen's Grey Album credits "Remastering: Dan Hersch & Bill Ingot at Digiprep Los Angeles, CA".

It's pretty unthinkable that WB didn't "bother with telling the purchaser that this release is remastered". If remastering was done, you can be certain the people who did the work will get credit somewhere. I'm not trying to start an argument and I won't deny that there was a little knob twiddling here and there but I don't want someone to rush out and buy this expecting to hear remastered versions of these songs.

Most remastering is just a case of boosting the volume levels anyway. What's the point of re-EQ'ing if it sounded fine initially? Most of Prince's albums could do with some boosting in the low end, but hey, as far as I'm concerned, that's what my graphic equalizer is for.

Here are some little technical things about the cds:

1) When I run these discs on my computer the titles of each cd reads as Best of Prince. Should it not be Prince Ultimate.

2) When I play disc 2 on my home system the total run time reads as the total runtime of the first three tracks, but the cd the runs fine.

Almost dude!

A remaster is when the original 2-track stereo mix down ¼" tape (which is called the 'Master') is cleaned and re eq-ed and re-recorded (these days digitally) to create a new ¼" Master.

A remix is when the original tracking sessions 24" tape is cleaned and then mixed down to 2 track stereo ¼" to make a remixed ¼" Master.

biggrin

I'm not so sure about the 24" tape part. maybe you meant tracks rather than inches?

Isn't that the kind of tape they used in the giant computers on all those 50's sci-fi movies and tv series. I remember them running constatly in the background on the bionic man and wonder woman.

(as an aside--is the version of Erotic City you listed 'official'? I didn't think there was one for that song...)

If anyone out there hasn't bought it I recommend you got to Meijer if you can....only $11.99 there! Very surprising! As for a review, well I knew what to expect, I guess and it's cool for what it is....Prince kind of editing history and only including the hits he wants to define his career (or his career as Prince). The Batman hits should be acknowleded, and why not "Mountans"? But what are you going to do? "Let's Work" was what I was looking forward to but holy shit....the screaming of "Let's Work" is scary shit...Still well worth it for those who won't buy "The Hits/B-Sides", the closest thing to a complete Prince hits set.

They only realse clean versions of albums that have advisory stickers on them, and i got the album at best buy, and on my copy the rap in "my name is prince" is censored... maybe prince did have some say in it after all.

I do belive he was involved...."Sexy Motherfucker" was a minor hit and I hear "Erotic City" on the radio...it's become a hit in it's own right.

yeah the claim is the actors whose voices appear would have to agree to have them used again.

but here is some trivia: in what post Batman Prince song does a sample from one of the actors in batman appear?

My Name Is Prince??? (not even the 12") Why is this on the Ultimate?

Cream (NPG Mix)? Crapiolio

I don't get the logic or reasoning for disc 1. These songs are everywhere.

WB released this for:

1. Long time fans - Most have the remixes. Nothing new here

2. Middle of the road fans - Would have bought VBOPrince for most of what's on CD 1. Probably don't care for CD 2 anyway.

3. New or young fans - Makes sense, but why not make CD 1 extended remixes also.

Between the 3 CD set released in '93, the VBOP in '01 and now this one, I can't take many more copies of "I wanna be your lover"

CD 1 should have:

Alphabet St. (This is not music...) A must for an ultimate collection
I Wish U Heaven (part 1-3) A must for an ultimate collection One of his best remixes of all.
Mountains (Ext)
Anotherloverholeinyohead (Ext)A must for an ultimate collection
Scarlett Pussy (Ext)
Housequake (7 min mo quake) A must for an ultimate collection
Erotic City (come alive..) The ultiamte prince my arse! A must for an ultimate collectionI Would Die 4 U (Ext)
Electric Chair (Remix)
Paisley Park (Ext)
New Power Generation (Funky Weaon remix)
Love or $ (Ext)

Put on "200 Balloons" (the "long as America" remix) before Cream (N.P.G. mix) biggrin

Maybe, I'm just too hard core of a fan to be able to step back and view this release as all that useful. Oh well, I'm off to get my copy. No, not really.

I didn't realise there was an extended version of 200 Balloons, what release do you purport this to have been off? Am checking Batdance section of sleeveogramia now.

Ya see, there was a 21 min. remix of "America" and .....the irony of a 21 min "200 Balloons" in place of.....bottom line "Cream (N.P.G. Mix) and "My Name Is Prince" have no business on an Ultimate.

With all of the aforementioned choices still available.

I'm really sorry. I was tongue and cheekin'. I sure hope you didn't spend too much time searchin. I should have known better than to tell P.org peeps there is any extended version of anything. I would have started searching myself. lol
