The Rainbow Children 5 years later

I just listened to the Rainbow Children for the 1st time in a long time, mainly to hear 1+1+1=3 and Everlasting Now cause I love both of them funky tunes. After playing those 2 I went back and listened to the whole thing. You know what? This thing is aging VERY well. I was on the fence when this was 1st released...I always liked the 2 songs I mentioned but was put off (as many did as well) by the "voice" and Witness lyrics. But this time not only did I jam throughout the album, this time I actually LIKED the voice. But also, I forgot how much Family Name rocked, how funky The Work is, how fucking smooth Mellow is, and how cool the album is as a whole.

Overall I think I can honestly say I am finally a fan of this album. Isn't it great when a Prince album sneaks up on you like this? This happened with with Lovesexy, Come, & The Vault too. I kinda wrote them off when they 1st came out then all of a sudden I get it and its a revelation. cool

The lyrics will ALWAYS make it sound aged. I mean, come on. The attitude about women that he has all over the album really belonged in the 50s or something.

That's an interesting comment. Kinda ironic coming from someone who calls himself "CuntOMatic".

Cunt is a term that many feminists have reclaimed. I was a Women's Studies major, so don't be trippin.

You can use any word you want. Who cares? The term "cunt," just like "fag," is used by many women to show strength - a reclamation of their sexuality, womanhood, and pride. I'm a fag, and I use that word with pride too. I'm queer. I'm feminist. I'm.... CUNT. CUNT O. MATIC.

Hmmmm....articles. It was an interesting read. But, I think it's no more than psychobabble. Kind of how "nigga" has been "reclaimed."

But thanks for the links. I like reading things that I wouldn't run across otherwise.

Well, those were non-academic things. I'd hate to subject you to some of the stuff I read back in the day.

A WOMAN IS FOR COOKIN, SUCKIN DICK AND SLAPPIN. KIDDING lol

P DUN SPENT HIS WHOLE LIFE USING WOMEN PURELY FOR HIS OWN PERSONAL PLEASURE. I THINK THE RAINBOW CONNECTION ALBUM IS A FAIR PRESENTATION OF THE TRUTH. JW JUST HELPED HIM GET TO THE POINT LOL

ONLY WOMAN EVER GOOD FOR HIM WAS THAT AURA CHIC CHARACTER IN GRAFITTI BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY. AND HE KILLED HER IN THE SCRIPT!! " GOOD CHIC. IMMA MAKE IT SO SHE DIES AT THE END THEN I CAN B A HERO GETTIN EVERYONE TO LIKE EACH OTHER AGAIN, JUST LIKE SHE SAID. THAT WAY, I CAN TAKE ALL THE CREDIT"

LOVE THE CHIC, TRY AN FUCK THE CHIC, KILL THE CHIC, AND LOOK REAL GOOD

I have been playing"The Rainbow Children" lately again in my car. I have a deeper appreciation for "The Everlasting Now" (it is also great performed live during a finale). "Family Name" is a great song (one of my favorite parts of the One Nite Alone tour was seeing him perform this song live). The song "Muse 2 the Pharoh" is the one that has grown on me the most. I have always loved that album. It reminds me of when a huge actor does a smaller, low-budget, independent film for the artistic value, passion, and merit of it. I look at "The Rainbow Children" as Prince's independent departure or project from the mainstream.

I must confess I rarely listen to it because I love it so much. It cant play it as background music, I have to really pay attention, specially with earphones, or playing it too loud on stereo...
Great album

I'd love this album a lot MORE if it were instrumental. Never had a problem with the music..
• Did you first think Prince was gay? •

Wendy: He’s a girl, for sure, but he’s not gay. He looked at me like a gay woman would look at another woman. Lisa: Totally. He’s like a fancy lesbian.

It is a sad attempt at apeing Miles Davis' Bitches Brew, a sad attempt indeed. End up sounding more new age/soft jazz then intriguing or beguiling.
