What exactly did Prince supposedly take... What did Prince take from Rick James. I have heard their music, like them both but have not heard much of a resemblance. Bsides the deep voice inputs. hav u had ur + sign 2 day.

Disc Jockey Tom Joyner said the first time he saw Prince, he was relatively unknown and was opening for Rick James in Chicago. He said that Prince came out, tore up the stage, Rick James was upset and soon after, he canceled the rest of the tour because Prince was showing him up every night. He told the story when talking about Rick James on the day after Rick died. Did anyone else hear him tell the story? | |

Rick James was touting his "punk-funk", as he called it. Prince topped him on that, I'd say...
Other than that... I believe U could include Vanity, or Denise Matthews, at the time. There's an "ouch" 4 U. "He's a musician's musician..." |

Rick claimed Prince stole the concept of a risque all-girl group, Vanity 6, from him. Also there's a story about Vanity going to an awards show with Rick but leaving with Prince.
At the end of the day, though, Rick just thought Prince stole his moves, his clothes, his music, everything. He should have stopped whining and just got on with his own career, if you ask me. | |
