C.J.: Prince's wife, Manuela, files for divorce

Prince and Manuela are over.
The rock star's second missus, Manuela Testolini Nelson, filed for divorce in Hennepin County District Court on May 24.

Court documents obtained today indicate that she has hired Edward Winer, a great attorney, while Prince is represented by Alan Eidsness (about whom I know nothing and therefore can't assess.)

There have been rumblings about the state of this marriage since last year. Because of rumors that they were not together and not getting along, around the time of Prince's "Saturday Night Live" performance with protege of the second Tamar, I made a joke on FOX9. I asked viewers whether Prince danced like a man who had hip replacement surgery or a man who was still married.

The speculation about whether Prince and Manuela were actually married began at the beginning. As some may recall, Prince kicked Mayte to the curb, by reportedly saying they didn't need a contract as the framework for their relationship.

Mayte and Prince wedded on Valentine's Day 1996.

Since it took the genius, Minnesota-born rock legend a few years to realize his disdain for a marital contract, there was reason to doubt that he and Manuela had a legal union. But they must have, since she's filed for divorce.

Many thanks to the anonymous tipster who found me in the office late Tuesday and said: "You need to find out why Judge Manrique is holding up the Prince divorce papers. You need to do some research so we can see what's going on there."

I have it on excellent authority that Judge Tanja Manrique thinks this gossip columnist would be critical of her for sealing a divorce file. While I await a phone call from the judge regarding this info, I can tell her that she's just plain ill-informed, dead wrong about this.

Never have I written a critical word about a judge sealing a divorce file, and I won't start today.

We all have a general idea about Symbolina's worth, so who needs more details? Attorney Winer is probably going to make sure that Manuela doesn't starve. And the record on Prince, who I think has written a song about how she just liked him for whom he is, should be a great help. Given the record on what a purple pain Prince can be publicly, we can all just image how much more entertaining he is in private and wish Manuela well.

Oh dear, if Prince doesn't have a pre-nup, this is going to be expensive. The guy made 50+ million $ in 2004.

Maybe that's why we have to wait for the tour - every $ he earns now is going to be shared with Mani...

Isn't the only way JW's can get divorced is if adultery has taken place?
