Should Prince retire?

It seems prince has lost the magic yall.He has isolated america with his weirdness and his insistance on sounding like the 70's in his music instead of futuristic like he did in the 80's.I hate to say if But going at the current rate prince will be a lounge act in vegas in 5 years guaranteed.I think he should retire in Los Angeles and become a guitar institue instructor.Or maybe do the lucrative thing and do movie soundtracks exclusively.I don't know,I just hate to see people laughing at him and teasing him like they were today when I was on the subway.....It's embarassing..What do you think he shoul do?
Remember don't be selfish and say release more subpar crap like we got from these last two albums. What will make history shine better on our fallen hero?

Prince should just do what he does best ...being Prince, being unpredictable.
Everytime people counted him out he came back with a vengeance, like after 1993 when he changed his name ( only a truly bold person could do something like that at that stage in his career) and great music and concerts followed.

Then he hit us hard after some turbulent years when he did TRC and the ONA tour, one of his best tours ever.

After all those troubled years, he still managed to come out clean, healthy and full of energy and positivity, unlike some other rock stars who seriously fucked up not only their careers but also their health and good looks.

Show the brother some respect where respect is due. He still has it in him , somewhere, and he shows it whe you least expect it.

I never counted him out in all those interesting years but evn I was surprised when I saw him during the 2002 Celebration at Paisley Park and the following ONA tour.
That guy is something else, something special and unique.

Absolutely not! What's crap to one person is treasure to another and if someone wants to laugh at him, then it's their loss not yours or mine. Of course I'd love for the youth to "get it" but if they don't then oh well. The kids may come around in time but that doesn't mean Prince should hang it up if they aren't feeling him now. In fact, I think it should be the opposite. Prince needs to be in everyone's faces and not let up. Beside, we're all going to be with the dude whatever the next step is and if you or anyone can't deal with it, then it's fine to leave. No big deal really. But Prince retiring? A cold day in hell.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

I only wanted to see you laughing in the Purple Rain.

collin I appreciate what ur saying...

as far as 'Prince the Musical Product' goes... you might b right...

but he will always be an exceptional musician ... limelight or no limelight ...

these times they are a changin ... rapidly ...

he doesn't have the necessary smarts to keep up ... let alone lead .

if i were soley concerned about the Music 'Industry' ... i'd go so far to say that he's become part of the problem ... not the cure ... and that's OK .

but given that I'm a humanitarian with a care for the soul that I can't deny ...

i'd go so far to say that he is loved beyond measure ... in worlds above and beyond all that he has known so far ... and maybe his happiness in general relies on his willingness to explore those worlds ... in the quiet privacy of a free life ... unbound by the restrictions of fame .

i believe anything is possible ... and if he ever wanted to 'come home' ... he could .

Are you silly? Prince should never retire. I mean the guy has the music in his soul. It's a part of him. It's who he is. You never stop doing what you are. If you do, then that part of you dies!

And I think I would too! I dig his funky sound!

People retire all the time from things they love to do when they realize they are not what they use to be....I'm not arguing that prince is an exceptional musician even better than he was in the 80's as far as musicianship.I'm talking about his ability to COMMUNICATE through his music. He use to could do that with everybody across ages, races, nationalities etc.....NOW YOU go to a prince concert and the majority of us are old folks..(past 33)

NOT TRUE. Did you go to Musicology? That was the most diverse audience ever. Young, old, all races, nationalities. Even on this website, you have a variety of fans as young as 15 and up. Even when I saw him a couple of months ago, we were waiting on line there was quite a diverse mix of people.

If you feel Prince is not communicating to you, then maybe it is time for you to retire from Prince. Take a break, go out there and discover new artists.

not entirely.

People retire all the time from things they love to do when they realize they are not what they use to be....

dunno about you, but from my understanding if you retire from something you like, obviously you weren't meant to do it at all to begin with. 'sides, it's akin to quitting and not retiring.

Its ok when they laugh and tease him. Its ok when they consider him a has been, and no longer the innovator. If someone were 2 take just one of them 2 his concerts, they would be just like the rest of us, a Prince fan, trying 2 get any and everything he ever produced.. I hope he keep doing what he’s doing. Whatever Prince decides 2 do musically he will always have my undivided attention. Retire 4 what? This man has so many roads 2 travel and I want 2 be there whenever he decides 2 travel them, whether it be the lounge thingy, movies scores whatever hopefully I will be there. Prince best years are lying ahead of him. He is not an old man. Prince is jellin at the right time. The man is truly a blessing 2 music and a gift from God…

Are we talking about the people that are going to see Prince, or are we talking about Prince selling out venues? I was responding to your statement about only old folks going to see Prince, which is not true. Prince fans continue to represent a diverse group of people both young and old.

If selling out venues is an important element to you and if you feel Prince is not communicating to you, then like I said, its time to take a break from Prince and move on.

What is this idea everyone has of quitting when things aren't going right. We all have down eras in life. Be it school, work, music, our hobbies... but is that any reason to say "F this, I better quit." No you try harder to make it better.

The subway thing sounds interesting: Please Tell. Were you playing Prince and they started laughing at you for digging Prince??? Or what brought up Prince on the subway? Besides why are they riding the subway when they could be driving a Benz or Lamborghini or Ferrari like Prince can!

Like somebody said above, I dig his last 2 CDs, I like 3121 as much or more than Purple Rain. Then I see brillance in most of all his work. smile
