In the real world, or an ideal world?

well I don't know what an ideal world would be. To me an ideal world would be a utopain one.

I ment the real world, in the aspect of the "listener". I mean, so many day to day people listen to the music, and that makes music popular. One reason we always look toward new artists is because they are well in touch with what "real life" is like and their songs are reflective of this. However when a "new band" gets popularity quickly, they are often very unintresting by the 3rd album because they've lost touch with that voice they owe their popularity to.

There's no doubt Prince is or at least was at one time a great artist. His earliest works show a firm connection to life and such things. His midrange stuff was beautiful works of art. However his later works seem to be nothing but "ain't it cool to be me" "idealistic love" and other things. I mean, he's still got talent, but it would seem it goes to waste.

The question is just subjective I guess. I don't think he's completely out of touch at one point bebop was completely out of touch so one can never tell.
I'm an org elitist... totally unapproachable.

The problem is he's trying to stay "in touch". He needs to throw today's mainstream the finger and make music for his fans. If the mainstream likes him...fine, if they don't....fuck 'em.

...I felt that post.

...It's a new day out there. I am a 38 year-old (sometimes) club DJ, and people who are 21-34 (The targeted demographic of an 'in-touch' club) are so into hip hop and what the radio beats down their throats - that they barely recognize what Prince fans would call "real music".

I hold Prince in the highest regard and would love to spin nothing but his best songs all night but my younger friends are just as passionate about Tupac and Biggie. In many circles - both Pac and Biggie are referred to as 'old-school' already. The recently most requested tracks from females are the Rhianna or Shakira songs.

P.and hip hop clearly don't mix. Even his scratch effects on almost every song are the same tired 'blasts' (The Word, Come, etc...) Those sounds are silly compared to the organic tones of vinyl manipualators like DJ Jazzy Jeff, Mix-Master Mike, or any almost any major-market local DJ.

As far as anyone or anything staying 'in-touch'...Once you can't 'live the demographic' - you are out of touch.

We all want the stuff that's found in our wildest dreams.

Is Prince out of Touch.....at times. Actually more times than I personally like. For instance, choosing to play 3121 at the BET Awards.

So playing the TITLE TRACK to his new CD at the awards show is out of touch? eek
I think if he played Lets Go Crazy/Purple Rain AGAIN to close out the show, that would be out of touch?

Is Prince out of Touch.....at times. Actually more times than I personally like. For instance, choosing to play 3121 at the BET Awards. Not releasing the Musicology Tour on DVD. The suing rampage he went on against his fans. Not Showing up at the Sheila E. benefit All Star Jam, though he was only a few miles away.

So again, yes I think Prince is slightly out of touch but I suppose he wouldn't be Prince if he was in touch.

I really have to agree with not releasing the Musicology Tour on DVD as very strange!
