Prince or Santana?

Santana has always been a major influence on Prince's guitar playing. Do you think that Prince's guitar style is on par with Santana? For an obvious example, when P plays Santana Medley in concert do you feel he has mastered Santana's style and is on an equal level with the man who influenced him so much?

I love Prince. But no one can match Santana's style. Not sayin' one's better or worse, just that Santana has his own individuality.....and then so does Prince.

I've seen Santana 5 times in concert, and the last time, I was at the stage, right at his feet. I love Prince- trust me, I truly do- but Santana is the MAN. Prince is great at a number of instruments, and his showmanship is exceptional, but Santana's shows are about the guitar-playing. guitar

The problem is, after 5 times, I opted not to check Santana out again this September. It's always the same- great guitar, but some "Maria, Maria", some new stuff, then a medley of the old jams.
Prince, on the other hand, needs to tour so I can hit show #30!!! You never know what you're gonna get or who you're gonna meet! dancing jig

actually if it was not for his tunes, prince would play the same solo. being a musician i can see some of the similiarities in all the instruments i've seen him play trust me u don't have to b a musicain to notice it. he always starts out a solo at a mid or high note then comes higher then does like a scale that goes into a deeper note then back to high and to finish it off he'll play a scale really fast to make u think it's hard then slide on his guitar then the band comes in and they hold a power chord for about 7 seconds and finish. bored songs that i have NOT seen this are ICNTTPOYM, Dolphin, SHH, play in the sunshine, and the cross. These have their own original sound. worship

lets get the facts
facts are:
prince can play faster i never heard santana play guitar runs as fast as prince did on shhh from hong kong rocks or snl fury.

prince is more diverse guitar player then santana.prince can play hendrix or benson style guitar which are totaly diffrent styles.

santana plays rock guitar on latin grooves and a bit of flamenko .i heard santana with weather report and john maklaughin but it wasnt jazz he played his usual style.

santana often plays rutine ,last time i heared him play diffrent was on brothers 1994 cd and 2002 on america with p.o.d.

prince mastered santanas style,he can sound as it was santana playing, check santana medley or soul sacrfise prince did on 2005 naacp awards.
he totaly killed it,he sounded like santana on steroids.

and one more fact MICHAEL BLAND FORMER NPG DRUMMER SAID ON PRINCE ORG THAT PRINCE SHOWED HIM A VIDEO WHERE PRINCE PLAYED WITH SANTANA AND THAT PRINCE PLAYED EVERY SANTANA LICK BEFORE SANTANA REALISED WHAT PRINCE PLAYS.
So i think michael blands opinion is more relevant then any of yours.

so when you say santana is better be careful ,because its probably more of your personal preferances then it is the truth.

At a Prince concert,
I think that the quality of artistry is higher.

At a Santana concert,
I find that the quantity of cannabis is higher.

prince does a routine every time he plays a solo it may not sound the same but the order of the notes he plays are similiar. U probably can't tell becuase u really don't care how it goes as long as it sounds good. I do notice it, which is y his solos have just recently (since musicology) started to amaze me because they r different, they vary. I don't jump and act crazy (not saying yall do) when i go to a concert, I sit back and chill & watched how the instruments are played and learn the routines every musician has. that how i know. wink Every musician has a routine their own style, it may change every once in a while but it's still the same style.

WOW! What a totally awsome subject!
Love 'em both! Prince has proven time & time again he can do it all. Thing with Santana is, like most Latin trained/style guitarists, they have certain melodic pattern drummed into them, which is why some people think Carlos' stuff sounds alike. He's just doing what comes naturally and just lets it rip and whatever happens, happens. I heard a couple of tracks where it's gone horribly wrong but that's what happens. It's happened 2 Miles as well!
Prince has got a bigger bag of tricks, he can switch styles with guitars ect.But I wouldn't say he's better.
One guitarist who I also love and is the equal of anyone is definately David Gilmour from Pink Floyd.

I love them both. It's just too hard to choose between them. Both men have amazing talent and tons of great music. I think they are equally talented on the guitar.

Santana was a HUGE influence on P as a guitarist. That said, I don't believe there is anything that Carlos can play that Prince can't. Again, with that said, STILL, Carlos, being Carlos, has his OWN personalized sound. Like Hendrix, you KNOW when it's Carlos playing right away.

Yeah, agree with the general drift of the above - prince's versatility, speed, steroids, whatever, BUT
Consider this:
Santana created a distinctive style which is amazing,
Although probably any1 here could always pick a P guitar lick, he hasn't created a distinctive style of guitar SOLO, which has influenced others or is even easily recognizable to the average listener.
Like with a lot of things, P draws from different sources and the blend is his distinction. Yeah, i see P's guitar style as unique but it's impact is far less than Carlos'...
