Batman Soundtrack: Is It Any Good?

I read something about this album in the Possessed book and there was one review in that book stating that it was simply just a party funk album. But it also stated that after the commercial disappointments of Lovesexy and Sign O The Times, this in fact sold over 4.4 million copies. I just wanted to know is this worth buying because it looks pretty interesting? I think I've heard a clip of Batdance before...

I really did not like this album when it was first released, but compared to much of his late 90's output, this album shines.

I dig this album, but yes Arms Of Orion is a pretty crappy song. But the rest of the album is very cool and funky! And as for soundtracks its by far the best movie soundtrack i have ever heard! Not including Purple Rain razz

Brilliant! Of course, this was the first Prince album I owned so I'm a little biased. Definitely get it.

Vicki Waiting? A gem? no no no!
Batdance & The Future are pretty good but not in the same league as the EC, Partyman & Scandalous.

Arms of Orion is not as bad as everyone makes it out to be.

I think the Batman Soundtrack is very solid.

It's a great little album - As others have stated, there's a bunch of gems on here, particularly:

The Future
Vicki Waiting
Scandalous

I even kinda dig The Arms of Orion, despite its blatant cheese factor. Really, it's a fun, focused album with cool concept and a dark streak that wouldn't show up again until Come in '94.

8.5/10

I think that's a total exaggeration. Edu who has done a very detailed study of the available information (http://www.ukmix.org/foru...hp?t=34161) estimates 2.5m for USA, 2.29m for rest of the world, so 4.79m worldwide. Certainly it has only received double platinum RIAA certification in the US (so more than 2million, less than 3million) and accurate Soundscan figures since '92 do not indicate it has miraculously doubled or tripled its sales since.

It's a great album.

Without arms of orion and scandalous, it would be an excellent album.

In some respects the album is quite light-weight compared to some of Prince's albums, but it is still interesting and excellent in its own way, certainly better than a large share of the albums since.

The Future is a desolate synth/drum driven track with beautiful Clare Fischer orchestration adding some classe.

Electric Chair is a fantastic rock guitar driven track, really fantastic stuff.

The Arms of Orion practically everybody seems to hate. Sure, perhaps it's a cynical attempt to restore the chemistry with Sheena Easton evident on 'U Got The Look' and sure, it's a very slushy ballad, but I really don't understand why people rag on this ballad in particular when Prince has done so many other slushy ballads. The lyrics are actually quite cool, though they have nothing whatsoever to do with the Batman movie, and more Fischer orchestration is never a bad thing. I think it's a pretty song well sung.

Partyman is a fantastic party-funk workout, a real classic.

Vicki Waiting is just a cool little mid-tempo funk song, a little gem.

Trust and Lemon Crush are relatively vacuous, simple synth/drum driven pop funk tracks, throwaway tracks to be sure, but still funky and hugely likeable.

Scandalous is one of Prince's best slow-groove ballads. Although I've never been hugely fond of Prince's ballads, and is another track with nothing to do with the movie, I can still appreciate the class of this track.

Batman is just a fantastically original track chock-full of samples from the movie and different sections that somehow work together. The guitar solo in the middle is one of my all time favourites. It's just such a delightfully wierd track. The only thing that comes close to it is Queen's work on the Flash Gordon soundtrack.

The album is held together wonderfully by all the references to Batman and the samples from the movie, over-all it is a pretty solid effort and great fun to listen to.

As well, all the 12 inches and b-sides from this period are fabulous, The Future and Electric Chair remixes, the extended Partyman and mixes, the Scandalous Sex Suite with the fabulous Sex track, Feel U Up, I Love U In Me, the Batdance/200 Balloons remixes - it's all stunning stuff.

The alternate version of this should be like this:

Prince should have dueted with Mayte...On arms of orion. The album would have suck with kirk j drummed in it! NPS looks like gold compared to this...She's got a nice ass and Manie is a whore stalker...And Tamar must really do incredible Head...Moonbeen levels should have been in Batman!!! Also put the necessary: Larry Graham is the devil...again!blahblah

Not as good as any album that came before, but better than quite a few that came after.

6.5 out of 10.
