Slave vs. Slave to the System

I have always thought Slave 2 the System was superior to Slave, but why did Prince go with the far inferior Slave?

The song is probably the most depressing Prince song this side ever smile

Yeah, I prefer Slave 2 The System as well, I guess. Who can guess why he choose Slave?

Slave just seems like a better more original mood than Slave to the System... more intriguing lyrics, more personal, not a generic soapbox, plus musically it is more interesting with it's more atonal, eastern key. More serious.

'Slave' is very good, but it could have been monstrous if recorded with better drum sounds and production.

Prince also used those 'rumbling' drum sounds on 'Ain't No Place Like U', on Mayte's 'Child of the Sun' album. He seemed to be getting off on that drum loop at that time. 'Ain't no Place' is imo better than either 'Slave' track and is the best track on Mayte's album anbd could have been classic if recorded with Prince lead vocaal, better production etc. The guitar's good tho.

Do we see a pattern emerging here? smile

which was the one with the funky rhythm guitar riff and he sings, "thompsons my last name...but my daddy's name is lloyd...the farther back i trace it the more it becomes null and void."?? i know there was like a hard rock/synth version sung by Sonny too.

I like the production, it is what makes it interesting to me... I don't like the music/melody on the other versions of this idea, like the Mayte album, or the outtake. Those sound more normal for some reason.
