What type of tour can we expect?

As a fan who misses the high energy days of Purple Rain, Under the Cherry Moon, Sign O Times,Lovesexy, etc. what can we look forward to with the 3121 tour. I really don't want to be treated to another three hour jam session. His last three tours have been fairly low energy for the Prince that I've respected as having one of the most dynamic stage shows. He hasn't DANCED since the HitnRun tour. I know its all about the MUSIC, but am I the only one that still longs for him to have a set( i.e. Sign O' the times, Lovesexy) with an actual show. And don't say its the age. Furthermore, this album requires a high energy show. The cool little stutter steps won't cut it, we need him to give it up.

I hear you but I don't think Prince's mind and money is in that vein anymore. I think those days are over.

No you are not alone. I love his music and respect that he is a musician that loves to play live music and is satisfied by that but yes I wish I could have seen the dynamic, preformance concerts that really were shows. sigh Oh well...I guess I have preformances of those shows..but I would have loved to see that live. You fans that got to see the Lovesexy, Purple Rain and Act 1 and 2 are very lucky! biggrin

With a Prince show you can expect a good dose of charisma, charm, good music and shouts of "on the one!" and "kick drum!"

Personally, the live experience and the crowd and just being there are enough of an adrenaline rush for me.

I'm imagining a hits show, much like the Musicology tour, but with a light sprinkling of 3121 tracks, with Tamar as the opening act.

What the shit? I thought the Musicology tour was very HIGH energy. Was it as chroeographed and broadway-esque as some tours past? No. However, it was fierce and fired up for sure.

Yes we are! Because I've seen those shows(except Purple Rain) I did'nt mind that the ONA tour was more focused on music with less dance, but i was a bit surprised beacause it was the first tour he was not doing the splits.I guess, as U are a dancer, wanting him 2 do a big dance show.

Me too, he was all over the place. I guess he's talking about sets and props and stunts and stuff. I would rather he just jam his ass off without a lot of bells and whistles.

As long as he and the band are playing on point I don't care about props, smoke, or pyro (gawd that is so 80's). I don't need to see sparks shoot out his ass or him running up and down ramps.

What I would like is for him to incorporate some of his older less popular songs into the set if he's going to do older material. Please leave Kiss, Raspberry Baret, Take Me With U, and Cream at home.

I'd actually love a concert along the lines of the One Night Alone tour. I didn't see Prince do any splits, there was no huge production, or set, just a night of incredible music.

I may be in the minority here, but I get more of a thrill watching and listening to Prince do a bass solo or a set on the piano that to see him doing the splits or running across the stage.

I agree with Ifsixwuz9 on this point, as well as incorporating lesser known gems.

I'm still of the mind that Prince should bust out some versions of songs he's written for other people, just to educate the uninitiated.

Actually I think you are the majority here. I think it's people like me who marvled at the big theater like productions that are few and far between. Most fans, at least on this board, didn't seem to appreciate the sexy backup dancers, the choreography, the storylines...ect...they seem to much prefer Prince just playing and bringing fans onstage to dance. Which is fine but I prefer the big stage shows. I remember reading that Robia LaMorte (Pearl of d&P) after she came off the D&P show thought all rock concerts were like Prince's with long hours, dancing, costumes. lights, ect. After being with Prince she saw someone's eles concert and was like "Huh? They just get up and play insturments? Really? Is this what most concerts are like?" Back in the day if I could have seen a MJ concert or a Prince concert I would have taken Prince for sure...Prince was far superior in many ways to jackson but one area where I think he gets overlooked is his fantastic concerts, dancing and stage presence.

But that's not to say I don't like seeing Prince play...it is exciting and a party in it's own way.. if he doesn't want to do concerts like that anymore that is fine with me and I'll still see him play....but omg I would love to have seen Lovesexy live!

He danced at both shows I saw too. He was very high energy - had me amped up for 2 days afterward.

Even when Prince is just playing instruments and singing it is still very energatic. He is moving more than most performers who are playing and singing.

it would be fun if he had a cool set design but whether he does or doesn't will not effect my enjoyment of the show. now, whether or not he does another hits tour will have a big effect on my enjoyment. i'm not interested in shelling out the cash for yet another hits tour (unless wendy and lisa are part of the band).

oh no, its not like that at all. i've seen prince 29 times and a lot of those were shows chock full o' hits. with a cross country move occurring at approximately the same time as his tour, he would need to make it worthwhile for me. in addition, madonna is touring and that is going to be expensive and let's not even talk about my need to put down seat deposits for school.

there's no urgency for me to see another "prince does the hits" sort of show.

For me, I don't want to see a "greatest hits" tour. I want music from 3121, Musicology and songs that were not hits. Although, I love the hits, I've seen him do them numerous times. I'd love to see jam on the guitar for 30-40 minutes too.

Yeah, I can agree with you there. I missed seeing both the Purple Rain tour and Lovesexy because of "friends". I can only imagine what it would have been like to see the Sign of the Times tour in person, with the set, the dancing, the great setlist. My first Prince show was Act 1, and that was a pretty big production. I've seen shows like Jam of the Year, where Prince really danced his ass off, and it was a great show, so I can appreciate both sides.

Part of what Prince brings to the table is his dancing, and I have the feeling he's not totally leaving it alone, especially judging from the Musicology shows I caught. Prince has changed up his dancing style a bit, and he still gets down.

it is his age though , sorry to say , but Prince grows old just like the rest of us . He dances as much as we can humanly expect for a 48 year old , maybe he cant do 5 feet jumps and mid air splits like he did in the 1980s and dash around the stage like a mad thing , but he can still dance , just in a less dynamic way . If Prince did try and dance and move like he did in the 1980s and got a hernia or broke an ankle and had to cancel the tour would that make you happy , accept the mans limitations ,sheesh .

I'm feeling this post, Krystal. I have never seen anything like the Lovesexy shows, I was 17... and just because it was the most outrageous spectacle ever, did NOT mean there wasn't enough focus on the music. I still listen to those boots. The sonics and performances were incredible. There was something about standing there in the dark and hearing Ingrid Chavez's voice over the PA... "rain is wet..." then on cue with "stomp your feet" there was a foot stomping thunder in the audience that gave you chills, like maybe you better leave because something dangerous is about to happen... only to have a spotlight hit Sheila E wearing a one-legged leotard as she started pounding her timbales, Prince driving onstage in a Thunderbird or something. BAD ASS.

Thanks for sharing Skip!
wave You are sooooo lucky to have seen Lovesexy live. If there is one tour I could have gone back and seen live it would have been Lovesexy hands down! Not only am I in love with the album but seeing a preformance of one of the shows I was like...OMG! That is so much more than a concert...that show...when you've seen the audiences faces...it looked like they were all so happy to be alive. Grrr I was born too late!

pout

But at the same time I can see how other fans could do without the big productions. There is alot of energy in a small theater. And I saw a preformance on tape of It's gonna be a beautiful night at First Ave in 87 and all that had was the band...nothing fancy...but that looked like one awesome party! I would have loved to see that live too!

I'm an artist so a coherent spectacle is appreciated. But more so I'm a rocker so his playing and singing is more than enough to leave me grinning for weeks. Since Purple Rain at Capital Centre. Musicology all three nights at MCI was something I never expected in my life. 3121? It's like we're in triple overtime and nobody is losing.

But i agree the whole "Lovesexy" tour experience was unbelievable.. I loved every minute, especially the intro to "I Wanna Be YOur Lover" so cool..

I remember thinking when I walked into that show that there was no place I would rather be and I knew I would never forget that tour. And I haven't forgotten what an awesome spectacle, man coming out in a tbird and playing erotic city? shit..
