Disappointing, but it isn't getting airplay, and the single being identical to the album version and with no extra tracks or mixes, it only appeals to the Prince fan elitists who collect everything for the sake of it. Otherwise, just buy the album.

There's no reason for anybody that owns the album to buy it, so i'm not that surprised.

Anyone know why it isn't getting airplay? I think it's the best single he's released in years. It seems odd that he could be albumn of the week on Radio 2 but they ignore his first official single confused

The song is a gem, but fairly experimental in its use of electronics. It's designed to make your speakers squeal, and that may not be a sound radio programmers want on the air. Either that or it's Prince fatigue after all of thosw failed singles. But I think the song is great enough to be considered a classic. It's a strikingly modern update of his sound.

I guess it's a grower but alot of people have too much ADD to listen to it more than a handful of times. We live in the world of the 30 sec byte.. who said that?
I personally think it's the weakest track on the album IMO, the production value & monontenous beat make it sound like a throwaway.

It's meant to be machine-like and rawly electronic. It may well be an acquired taste..

I've heard that the album has dropped from 9 to 22, also disappointing.

The UK used to be one of his bigger markets, what happened? And don't tell me it's lack of promotion, he did the Brits which is probably the year's most important music show, and is more than he did for anywhere outside of the US.

I think the chart position is important because Prince is more likely to do concerts in the UK if he can see there is a market to tap - he is less likely to do concerts outside of London if he thinks he's gonna struggle to sell tickets.

Although, actually touring around a bit would help build his fan-base up again and ultimately encourage sales, which is what he should be doing really...

I do actually think he needs to promote this more. The brits was weeks ago. He needs to come over here and plug bthe album like he did with Musicology in the states 2 years ago. Then announce a tour in June which will rock!

We need him here now!

The main reason: the single and the album have hardly been promoted at all here. Musicology was promoted well hence it did will in the charts.
Also the single should have been released earlier at the time of the Brits to capitalise on it - as once people have the album they are unlikely to spend £4 -- almost half the album price on one song! It needed an unreleased B-side!

Also time we had a tour - it always helps!

Of course it is I'm not saying that. I've been following the man for over 25 ears so i do have perspective on this track. He just has so much more in him it's frustrating to hear him half-ass it.. There just isn't any meat on the bone IMO.

What promotion did Musicology get that 3121 didn't in the UK? Seems to me they had very similar promotion - both had a single with video - Musicology (the song) although it never made it to a single release until much later, and Black Sweat. Actually I've seen Black Sweat on video shows much more than I ever saw Musicology. Both had tv adverts. Both had magazine adverts. In fact, I would say 3121 has been promoted far more, with billboards on the tube and an appearance at the Brits.

Musicology reached number 3 with fewer sales than 3121 and quickly dropped out of the charts. In that sense, it didn't do too well in the UK.

Of course, personal appearances by Prince would help sales, in any country.

Yes, he needs to do more promo! It's not enough with a few small appearances in the US and one in the UK and being mentioned by Diddy in Nasty Girl... There are a lot of people out there who don't even know Prince's still active! But how we gonna make him realize that?.... hammer

why are you guys so depressed? The song will surely climb in the coming weeks, won't it? confuse or is Number 43 the peak position?

In any case,"Black Sweat" is one of his hottest jams ever, regardless of how well it does on the charts.I love that song headbang

There was no possibility of it making the Top 10 as some of the biggest retailers in the country didn't stock it in many of their stores - Woolworths, WHSmith and maybe Tesco. Why? I wish someone could tell me.

It didn't have a chance. Also, releasing it the week AFTER the album seems like a strange move.

You guys have Woolworths in the UK? In my area, they shut down those stores years ago lol

yeah, most of them shut down here along with the u.s. stores, but it seems to have had a resurgence of late with new stores cropping up again! its one of the biggest music retailers in the u.k. now.

also, black sweat will disappear completely from the charts next week, what an absolute waste of cd production. Why the record company didnt push it is beyond me.

I wonder if it was technically a double A with BLB it would have been top40, as BLB has been on Radio2 A list for a few weeks now.

Considering Cinnamon Girl got to #41 (i think?) I wonder if this time, Prince had put a bside and live track on ala Cinnamon Girl it might have cracked top40. Nobody on this site seems to be mentioning buying the single (why bother?) and I certainly didn't, but we all bought Cinnamon Girl.

Considering that the difference in numbers around 30-40 is only in the hundreds, its not stretching it too much to say that just a single bloody bside, remix or live track would have pushed this up the charts to a more respectable position.

oh well, it looks like P doesn't want to do Bsides this year, I think theres a reason why though - after all we had 3 with Musicology and this is clearly meant to be a 'bigger' album.

Davideye - unfortunately in the UK records tend to chart at their Peak position and then fall from there. BS wont be in the Top75 next week I can virtually guarantee it.

Missing the top40 means no chance of exposure on Top of the Pops or any show that might even vaguely atand a chance of resurrecting it!

The UK charts are based on sales only, so airplay wouldnt have counted (had there been any to speak of!)

Its no surprise. The Brits were weeks ago (and he didnt play BS anyway), so most people will have entirely forgotten about that performance by now. It's only us diehards that will remember it for a long time to come.

I've no idea why he insists on releasing albums before singles, especially singles with no extras? Common practice is to release the single either 1 or 2 weeks before the album so that diehards might just buy it. 37k people already had the album and no reason to buy the single so no43 is no surprise. Now if they'd put the Brits performance on the B side there would have been a whole load more people buying it.

The album too is bound to plummet. No more promotional activity (unless the Radio2 rumoured show is gonna happen?).

He needs to either tour or appear on some music shows / talk shows but I cant see that happening.

3121 sold respectably in its first week but was a victim of the Mothers Day rish for the bland I'm afraid. Some weeks, sales of 37k would be enough for a no1 album no problem. But once again, it's only us here who really care!

Still when alls said and done, that's back to back top10 albums for him in the UK and it's a long time since we've been able to say that.

The funny thing is, Black Sweat was out as a single 2 weeks ago in most countries and the US, even if it was only for an Itunes download. Why the release was delayed in the UK while even the video was being played 2 weeks or so ago on music vid shows I don't know. Sometimes a lot of airplay before the actual release can build anticipation and make the song a hit, but since this song didn't get the airplay, it didn't work. I'm not a collector so I wasn't interested in buying the single for completists sake without an interesting b-side or remix.

After buying it via NPGMC it wasn't worth buying the CD. I opted for the picture disc as it was the only item I wanted. I'm not sure how that faired either. Is the Picture disc as wanted as previous picture discs?
