I am sure Alan will be gutted to hear this. I personally think Alan's interviews are intelligent, insightful and very interesting. Its not like he is gossiping about Prince's private life.

Also if your not going to read anymore why tell us, why not just decide that for yourself..why all the dramatics?

I love the way he tells the stories. It sounds very honest and respectful, not gossip.

I hope he releases a book someday

I'm sorry, but I refuse to believe that Prince didn't know anything about jazz before Wendy & Lisa. I'm not saying he knew everything, but he had to know something. His dad was a jazz musician, for shit sakes, he had to at least know something.

Exactly. Alan and Eric Leeds have been spinning this version of their Prince education for years now. I'm sure there's a great deal of truth to their influence but Prince is a musical sponge and forever exploring musical history. The story also fails to give Prince any credit for discovering and learning on his own. If it's true, it makes the forays on the first Madhouse album where Prince basically plays and composes the whole thing, that much more amazing. He has a encylopedic knowledge of music. In addition to his father being a jazz musician, his mother was also a jazz vocalist. And don't forget P was also jamming with the likes of Sheila E. and Patrice Rushen who have a foundation in jazz.

Gotta agee on this point. As the daughter of a jazz musician I can say that my Dad had all the greats in his record collection. And I frequently heard him playing them as a youngster. It wasn't my kind of music at the time so I really didn't pay much attention to it. Same goes for my brother. Neither one of us actually appreciated the art form until we got older. But we were very well aware of it.

Prince was not peeping that much jazz.
The music speaks for itself.
When Prince started dipping into jazz, his music turned soft and porno like.

Alan Leeds about 1988:'A couple of months later Miles came to Minneapolis for the opening of the US portion of the tour that year. We had a big party at Paisley Park. It was very much a media event - the Warner execs were there and the MTV was there. Miles came to that and was just there socially. There was a jam session that night and George Clinton was there and Mavis Staples and a few others, and they got on stage, but not Miles - he didn't play.
Then a couple of weeks after that Miles came to our concert in Madison Square Garden in New York. So they're seeing each other more often, but still no activity. Then in December 1988'

Miles Davis did performed with Prince at a aftershow in London in '88

You may be right, but you have to remember Prince lived with Andre Cymone's family more than either his father or mother during his formative years and always had a particularly frosty relationship with his father. I mean, what children actually listen to their parents music? Otherwise I would have grown up loving Barry Manilow and James Last!

Firstly, to say Prince is a liar, well you would have to give me the quote where Prince categorically says he worked with Miles Davis present in the studio. As the interview reveals, Prince did have some recordings of Miles sent to him and could have worked on those, so he could be implying he worked with Miles Davis' material in the studio or had jams including Miles samples, though not with Miles actually present.

If you actually bother to read the interview, it clearly reveals that 'Can I Play With U' was recorded by sending tapes back and forth, they were not in the studio at the same time, which is what workingupahiyellasweat was saying.

I have never heard that Miles Davis performed with Prince on stage other than the New Year's Eve concert at Paisley Park in 1987. Are you sure you are not confusing that with the aftershow at Camden Palace where Ronnie Woods and Mica Paris guested?

Some of that madhouse sounds like soft porn background music.

Yeah, and that Xenophobia was a real Jazz classic.

Prince was better when he uses synth horns, and he might as well have a synth guitar with all those loaded effects and loops he uses.

I wish you would get off it, Prince had some bad musical periods and some of that Madhouse stuff is soft core porn background music.

Since he already hooked up with Najee, Im waiting for him to invite Kenny G to his band.

Prince is a liar, he never recorded any studio tracks with Miles. Prince spits all that crap about the truth, and lies about collabs with Miles.

Not to get involved in your own personal pointless spat with JPW, but as I posted before, according to Alan Leeds, Prince did collaborate with Miles, except Miles wasn't in the studio at the time. Prince often does this, he collaborated with Kate Bush by sending taped back, and most of his 'collaborations' with associated artists have been him doing a demo on his own and then letting them work further on it.

I realise that now. I posted it before I read the interview.

I think the point is moot though. They still worked together and played on stage together so what's the difference? Not much... they never became tight musically perhaps, but they are still very much associated so calling Prince a liar seems kind of funny.

Oh and workingupahiyellasweat, I have no personal beef with you, I respect your distaste for some of Prince's work, however I do think you're dissing a lot of the good stuff. Madhouse and Xpectation, sure they're not jazz greats by ANY STRETCH, but for someone who is otherwise basically a rock/r&B/funk musician, they're certainly not a bad go at the genre! Prince CAN play jazz very well I believe and again his official output is not complete testament to that. It doesn't honour just how well he can play jazz styles.... just wait 'till the stuff comes out of the vault one day... he'll gain respect for his full abilities, you'll see. And if you don't think he's an able musician in various styles, then what aspect of Prince DO you dig?

Eric joined the band in the middle of the Purple Rain tour and quickly became friends with [guitarist] Wendy Melvoin and [keyboardist] Lisa Coleman, who were familiar with jazz. Gradually they began turning Prince into this kind of music- he had little first hand knowledge of jazz. This was during 1984/85. They made it their own project of turning Prince onto different kinds of music. Eric would give him jazz records and turned Prince on to Sketches of Spain and Kind of Blue and other stuff.

Of course he knew about jazz if his Dad was jazz musician. I don't have any issue with Alan's stories but sometimes he makes it sound like P has no knowlegde of anything and gets to be a bit much.

I'm not on the anti-Lisa & Wendy credit but didn't Prince record JAZZ jam sessions around the time of 1977/78?

And anyway, Alan did NOT say that Prince didn't any clue whatsoever prior to his relationship with Lisa/Wendy/Eric,,,he said, that his knowledge about jazz isn't that deep, as opposed to their knowledge.
