He played it very often at the ONA concerts in 2002. It's on a lot of boots.

I wish that a full version existed of the rehersal version that is shown briefly at the end of the Prince documentary that was broadcast on the early nineties. Very moving

I agree totally. Hopefully someday a comprehensive DVD collection will be released and we will get to see and hear the full performance. I'd love to have an audio copy to but Prince really looked like he was feeling that song at that moment, complete video would be killer.

Ah yes, love for "The Ladder.''
I was struck by that documentary version, too. Beautiful.
It would be GREAT if the NPGMC included that for purchase in the downloads section - as audio or video or both!
Peace

I would love to here the live version. Here in NZ that 91 documentary was never played, just about 45 seconds of it on a music show (a couple of celebs with brief soundbites about him - i think clapton and maybe little richard - and about 5 seconds of the ladder - a soundcheck maybe - it looked excellent but was never shown). For years i've wanted to a) see the full doco, and b) hear a live version of the ladder.
Bloody NZ, Hobbits but no Prince!

It's a beautiful, thought provoking song and the answer to your question is yes-a beautiful song is supposed to evoke emotion in the listener wink .

Oh-I need a copy of that too!

Funnily enough I have just seen that today - Is it called "Prince A Portrait" or something like that, Eric Clapton is on there alongside TT Derby, Miles Davis and Lil Richard??

It is a beautiful version, if it is the same one, It was taken at a Soundcheck in LA.

Hadn't read all the above - It is mentioned !!!
