I think I surprised my friend the most by showing him examples of amazing drum machine programming (and effects) from the mid `80s material (including The Family, Sheila E.).

1 friend and alot of girlfriends from me listening 2 Prince they learn and get into his music. Everyone I met only know his hits like "kiss" and "Most Beautiful Girl In The World" and there shocked that I like Prince. Alot of people dont even know he plays guitar and there shocked that he actually has a deep voice. So I educate them by playing the Sign O' The Times DVD, Purple Rain DVD, Prince and The Revoulution Live DVD, Purple House on the Rave DVD, the Ride on the Prince Live DVD, the Batman Videos on the Batman DVD etc.
Goodnight, sweet Prince.

SenseOfDoubt

Last time a friend of mine visited me, and I played in row
- I Feel For You (chaka khan)
- Manic Monday
- Nothing Compares 2 U (sinead version)

Afterwards I asked: "You know WHO wrote all of these songs, don't u?" - Not worth mentioning that he was VERY surprised. I guess all of them know how great he is, but taste is different for everyone. Some say they don't like the drums, some don't like the voice... whatever.
But I try...

Yeah, actually it is frustrating that most people even don't know what a fantastic musician he is - when SNL was on youtube.com I "ordered" someone to watch it and he was overwhelmed.

OH yeah, I guess what I like to do most is have young kids who are into R&B listen to older-school Prince and The Time. They kinda dig it.

I am slowly winning over my friend and her husband...The husband has played guitar since the age of 13, so he appreciates Prince's guitar skills. I started by making some mixed CDs of songs with best guitar solos, then made them watch RRHOF performance, Musicology concert, SOTT DVD... I even got them to go with me as Wendy, Lisa, & Prince for Halloween, and they went to the Brooklyn screening of Purple Rain. It's just a matter of time before they give into the purple madness. biggrin
The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

I have a friend who claims to absolutely HATE Prince. Every time he comes to my house I just happen to be listening to Prince and the 1st thing out of his mouth is, "who is that? That is really good", and I say, "that's Prince", and he says, oh.....

Keep in mind, this happend at least 30 or more times over the years, but he still claims to hate Prince. Go figure.

One year he even claimed that Milli Vanilli was better than Prince. Can you believe that? I will never give Prince any credit but I'll bet that when I'm not around, he is digging the groove. -Mg

hmm haha
at work we just have typical rock or rap people.
im known as the prince boy.
ive a few cd's in my car

i've given lifts to a few people
yesterday i was giving a lift to some spanish guy and you know what i put on.. one nite alone, dorothy parker about 3 minutes in.. haha he loved it.
those jazzy/latin sounds

its funny how i dont mention its prince until its playing for a while. ive also tried days of wild to a rap person, and joy in repetition from ONA Live to a guitar player at work. i think they were all really suprised that they didnt hear soemthing that sounded like 1999. its good to let people know that just because your a prince listener it doesnt mean we are just 80's disco queens

-----

on the other hand my close friends all dont mind prince because being around me it is just a part of their lives now, most of them own the greatest hits and 2 friends also have musicology...which i wish they didnt buy and got something else instead

oh i was in athens in 2004 and met some metal heads. one from the group also liked jazz so i put on a song from the vault with the nice guitar solo and he loved it.. he was also quite shocked.

He asked me about 3 times with his strong greek accent:
"this, is prince?" ...."yep"
"wait, "this, is prince?" .."yes it is"
"prince?"

i done something illegal and burnt him a copy of 2 albums but hey, i beleive he will now go and buy more prince albums so i think i did the right thing.

i like showing people the sides they dont know to my favourite musician, why not? prince has been around for what? 28 years

spread the word, spread the sound i say

I hear that. I know I'm directly responsible for 30-40 thousand Prince cd sales over the years. Probably more.....

Every day I try to do 'The Work',that is to spread the word about P and his brilliance.Sadly, there just aren't many people around here willing to appreciate genius.I've got my daughter and best friend to appreciate him and my cousin back into him after a 10 year break but apart from them everyone else just doesn't'get'him. That's why it's great to be here at the Org with all of you. biggrin

You guys!

I never make anyone listen to Prince unless they happen to live with me. In the 80's I did, but since then maybe I've asked two people to listen to a Prince song, but only to show his live skills, which they were doubting. It didn't make any difference to them -- they claimed they know Prince was a good musician but couldn't get over his voice.

Those that have lived with me -- my three partners -- had no choice but to submit to my habit. But for about 5 years now, I hardly listen to anything on the speakers == it's all portable devices. My present beau likes a lot of his live stuff and has is own cd-r and iPod playlist containing only his favorite songs.

Nope. I actually like being the only Prince fan among my friends. It makes me unique and special and I also kinda feel good, even somewhat superior smile, that I get Prince and they don't.

...at the same time, it's kinda lonely being the only Prince fan because I can't share my enthusiasm for his music with anyone else. Even better if I can find a partner who can at least appreciate his music, not necessarily love his music as much as I do.

One day at my mom's house, I was blasting Bob George and my brother had some of his friends over (he's into b-boying and all that) and he came to my room and asked me what I was playing and I said "You know it's Prince." and he said "THAT'S Prince?" I said "yeah. who else would I be blasting through the damn house you big dummy." And he said "Let me get a copy of that!" and I said
" hmph! dance to your own stupid music." evillol
