No More Studio Albums?

After putting the SNL performance on the iPod, I had a thought. Would I replace it with the album version in March? Pretty good chance I won't.
In concert his music definitely has life. Sometimes I wonder if being the perfectionist he is, he does so much polishing and re-arranging it loses it's live 'bite'. Unlike most performers today, he doesn't need hours of sound engineering.
So IMHO, I say ditch the studio versions and do the albums live at Paisley. I think you would have a great CD and even a DVD if it was filmed. He is a true artist, why hide behind the soundboard.
Thoughts?
Life without music..... why?

Because you can do things in the studio that you cannot do live. Unless they are pre-recorded and sampled into a keyboard. And you know how Prince is, he would have to get band, teach them the songs, rehearse them, then record the songs. Why do that if you can just get up at night and start jamming on your own?
Actually, I'd really like to see him some very "studio-ish" albums. Not over-produced in the way we usually use the word, but 1999-ish.

Anx

can an artist go back? once they get used to all the production and flourishes and all the other assorted crap, can they figure out how to make it simple and sparse again? or is that gone forever, and waiting for the next wave of young musicians who have more imagination than money?

Live versions are more exciting, but the contrast is part of the fun. The recorded version is perfected, and the live version rocks harder, warts & all. Prince recordings benefit from live sound--live drums--but I like to have the perfect 48 track album versions.

And thats why I'll always be a Prince fan...his albums may be dross in recent years but he knows how to turn it on live and every show I goto redeems him for the 3 years previous and the 3 years coming

One thing i kind of wish Prince would do when releasing albums is stick a bonus CD of live studio versions of the same album tracks.

Essentially the same album, but with an accompanying studio version too.

Yes ....

The original incarnation before he "commercializes" it to club members, and a then "pop" version CD for the masses.
