Prince Fan Since...

Hand in hand with the "Prince fan posers" and sheer curiosity, I would like to know when everyone could say they really became a fan. Don't lie...I know I am going to see a lot of 1984's on here.

Me, not as long as many of you, but since "The Most Beautiful Girl in the World" came out. I heard it on the radio and fell in love with it. In fact that was the first CD I bought. (Come on Prince fan elders I was only 1 when Purple rain came out) biggrin

1985...I missed the phenomenomen and had to backtrack. Hated the Purple Rain era and couldn't understand why my friends liked him. Then they all moved on to Duran Duran and I started digging P.
All good things they say never last...

I am not a fan.
News: Prince pulls his head out his ass in the last moment.
Bad News: Prince wasted too much quality time doing so.
You have those internalized issues because you want to, you like to, stop.

I became a Prince fan in I'm gonna go w/1994/95ish. It was whatever year that he did the MTV awards in the yellow outfit. I was 14 or 15 at the time, and I was like HOLY SH*T that was like THEE coolest thing I've ever seen in my D*mn life!

Not too long after a friend of mine let me borrow his copy of the Hits 1 & 2 and that's what made me a fan, really. It wasn't his material at the time, but his older stuff.

SOOOOO, I started gettng any and every Prince album I could get my hands on, in no particular order, and there ya have it.

I guess I could be consisered a Prince Fan Poser, cuz I STILL have no where close to every album, but I don't care. I know I'll gettem' one day. I love what I have, and that's all that counts! wink

I was born on the day "For You" was released. As a toddler I wiggled my diaper to "I Wanna Be Your Lover" and in 1983 "Little Red Corvette" was my kindergarten jam! My seventh birthday party was held at a skating rink in 1985 and my birthday song request was "Raspberry Beret." In 1991, "Diamonds and Pearls" was the first cassette I ever bought with my own money. (That hologram cover was fascinating at the time!) And every year I become more of a crazed fambot. biggrin

the edit sez: i have drunk the purple kool-aid and it is good

1991 after I heard Gett OFF and Cream on radio.

I guessed by many I am consider to be a late fan since people started to become PRince fans around 1999 or Purple Rain era.

But hey I can't help the year I was born, and besides I am sure Prince have appreciated for us later birds. biggrin shrug

boxed I'm an old veteran....I was in 7th grade when Soft and Wet hit the radio in '78... to be honest, I thought it was a girl group singing at first, lol...when the "Prince" album hit the next year, I was like "ummm..that's cool, but I dunno"....when Dirty Mind hit in '80, that album cover made me jump back a bit lol , but I really dug "Uptown", and the Title track....when Controversy dropped in '81, and I heard "Let's Work", and "Sexuality", I said, "Alright, that does it! Ya got me! I'm officially a Fan...now let's see what the F*ck this boy is gonna do next!"

One Thursday in 1984 when "When Doves Cry" first entered the UK top 40 chart. Saw a clip of it on "Top of the Pops" and it blew me away.

Not as much of a fan as I was (1989 to 2005 has been bad...) but still look back fondly to that awesome five years, hoping that the magic will return.

The Gold video got me interested, to say the least. I remembered being kind of fascinated by the SOTT video too, back when I was around 6/7. I got TGE, then I think Purple Rain, from then on I don't know anymore. I remember seeing Crystal Ball at a Dutch record store when my family visited Amsterdam and, opposite to all the bitching about his later art work generally, I found it really intriguing because it further proved to me that he was kind of underground and not all bling-bling. No song titles and stuff, I thought he was the sh*t! lol
Man, I don't know how many of my old computer games I sold to friends to get that damn thing. Was expensive as f*ck, especially since I did not yet work back then.

I've been a fan since the Prince album, which was in '79/'80...I think. I was fortunate enough to attend the Rick James/Prince tour. That's when I fell in love with P. I was only in the 5th grade at the time. biggrin

That would be 1982. honestly. When Controversy was out. That was it. I was 9.

I am a fan... fan. fan... fan. I ain't into that crap about "i'm not a fan cuz the definition of fan is blah blabbity blah." if you ever posted anything on a fan website, you are f-a-n. if you have ever felt the need to defend Prince when you hear someone criticize him or his music, you are a fan.....if you have ever typed a sentence using the letter "U" instead of the word "YOU," then U are a fan.

oh, you ain't ask me all that did you?.... um i would say 1982. since 1982.

For Christmas in 1980 I asked for an Elvis record and a Prince record. I got Elvis greatest hits the "I wanna be your lover" 45! I was twelve. I was in a small town and only bought records when going to New York City. I bought Dirty Mind and Controversy at the same time. I was hooked from then on.
My first concert was in Providence 1982!

my story's kinna weird: i remember seeing the videos for "u got the look", "icnttpoym" and "alphabet st." all the time on friday night videos when they first came out. at the time those joints came out i was around the age of 7. then i saw the "kiss" video when i was 9, and fell in love with the song (it's still my fave prince song to this day)...but i didn't become a fan till i heard the dirty mind album when i was 14.

i knew about the brotha somewhat damn near half my life, but he didn't kick my ass till 1994. 12 years later, i'm still around.

despite being 22 year old. and grew up during some of prince's hits and my parents having prince albums. i didnt become a fan untill 2003/2004 when my friend got me into him. when i told her i didnt know much of his stuff. she was shocked. and was like you gota listen to this stuff your gona be blown away. have much respect for her opinion in music i did. and i was BLOWN AWAY. and have been a HUGE fan ever since and now i have almost ever single album. just bought "for you" last night annnd OOOHHHH MMMYYY GOOOOD LOVE IT! lol. I asked my parents why they didnt play prince when i was kid. and they said they didnt real think i was good idea for me to listen to some of his music at that age. as i was listing to people like mj and signing "thrilller, thrilller night!" at the top of my lungs in the grocery store. it may be a bad idea if i start siging as a 6 year old boy."I met her in a hotel lobby masturbating with a magazine" at the top of my lung, so i can understand where there coming from. lol.

I would love to play up to the stereotype and say Purple Rain 1984, I was only 8 and far too young to be a serious consumer of Records and recording artists. I liked Prince songs when I heard them on the radio, but my first fan experiences were with a Maori reggae group called Herbs and a bit later with Milli Vanilli (Sad!!), Madonna, Cyndi Lauper, and Michael Jackson.
It was November 1990, Milli Vanilli had been denounced as Lipsinkers and I burnt my tape, but then discovered!!!! Grafitti Bridge and kind of liked it, but I wasnt a fan. I went straight into a brief flirtation with Mc Hammer, Warrant, Skid Row and Bon Jovi (What was it with 1990!!!). And then I went hardcore over Ice T the Chilis and Color Me BADD in early 1991 (!!!!!)But I only became a fan in 1991 with the cream video bought all the cassingles for the D and P singles and that included Insatiable, finally the album. Then in 1992 I started to buy old albums, I got Purple Rain and the hits in 1993. But it wasnt until early 1995 when i was a student I truly discovered all his old stuff and by the time I was 20 in 1996 I was familiar with all his stuff. I listened to other groups too, like Pearl Jam
17 Years ago I made a commitment to Prince

I was a young kid when I saw the movie Purple Rain. I have loved him since then. I am quite new to using the computer on an everyday basis but I remember watching the movie and being moved by the perfomance. I was only young and I know that beimg allowwed to watch an adult or rated R movie seems bad but my parents let me watch whatever and it made me smarter and more aware of music my love for it and loving what Prince stands for and sings.
Not sure if I love him but I do know that I do love his music. Call me oldfashioned but you have to know somebody before you can truly love them. I learned that the hard way. Thanks "Rock on Prince!:-p"

I became a serious Prince enthusiast in 1983 when I was 11. Boy did I live and breathe him...not much has changed! I seemed to be in a minority back then as everyone else was into MJ, and now I'm still in that minority. I don't know of any other fams in my area so thank God for The Org! smile

the girl with the butterfinger between her legs showed me the way... i was 12 years old and loved what i heard... after i got the 1999 cassette in 1983, it was all over for me. i remember before Purple Rain came out, the critics said it was going to be a bigger hit than 1999 -- i seriously laughed at the thought. some of us had NO idea what would happen the next year. 1999 is still my fav tho.

Since I heard Little Red Corvette.... I actually thought Michael Jacson was singing it and then later found out it was some guy with a strange stare on his prior album Controversey. After listening to Every album before 1999 for about a year..... I was hooked.... and then, Purple Rain had me mesmerized when I was 14 and I said woah this guy is my hero.

And so now for 24 years I've been a hardcore fan / customer and spent thousands of dollars on his movies, music and concerts... traveling around the country 2 see him.

Now, I am banned from NPGMC because I was discussing sex and religion in the chat.... gee, imagine that, a 24 year Prince customer discussin sex and religion.... my hero has sung about sex and religion for 30 years and I am a banished one?

I honestly can't remember exactly the moment I became a fan. I do remember my uncle giving me the Erotic City record. I am so bad because I can't remember what was on the other side! Are those small records called 12"? I just remember playing it on my record player and thinking, "OMG what did he say?! Did he say what I think he said?!" By the way, my record player was cool because the front of it lit up with all these colored lights. It lit up to the beat of the music. It even came with a microphone that you could plug in. Anyway, I was born in '73 so I guess I was around 10 or so. Honestly I can't remember. The one thing I do remember was being so attracted to his style of music and thinking that I hadn't heard anything like it. It was just so different. I admit having lost interest at times over the years, but I have always liked Prince.
