P shames his own work...

(Not that anyone actualy cares what I think...)

Okay, I know there are threads to discuss these songs seperately, but I'm discussing them together. I just heard both "Black Sweat" and "Fury" and these two songs together put to shame just about everything he's released since his contract ran out w/WB. Don't get me wrong, I actually like most of what he's done - but this stuff is far superior in many ways.

When I heard "Te Amo Corizon" I thought 3121 would just be Musicology Part II, but I really hope these two are more representative cuz in that case 3121 will blow away any doubts the last 10 years of (mostly) mediocrity he's released...

Last week, I made a prime rib roast when my in-laws were comming over. It was very good.

This week, there was no prime rib roast, so I had to get a regular roast, I made a paste out of galic and red wine. I placed it on a bed of onions and mushrooms. I covered the roast in the paste and I am cooking it real slow.

It is funny to me to think one of these roast might "shame" the other just because they are diffrent.

Next week, I might have to fry another turkey.

Now THAT is one hell of an analogy!

How did the second roast turn out. I wanna know more about how you cooked the Prime Rib.

Your channeling Julia Childs, don't stop now!

Oh, by the way don't deep fry a turkey because inevitably firemen always have to show up.

Prime Rib for the In-Laws? What trouble did you get into MickG?

It would take less time to confess than it would to cook a whole roast.

His in-laws are vegetarian.

It was the best way to break the news and eat for the rest of the week.

- You forgot The Rainbow Children. It´s some of his best music ever released. ´Fury´ is amazing, but I can´t say that ´Black Sweat´ is that great musically (harmony + melody).

I get alot of pleasure out of cooling. It's one of those things "i do". However, cooking is only half as fun if you are the only one or two eating your food. Sharing the food is where the pleauser really comes out of cooking. As one might imagine, I haven't done any negitive thing I have gilt for, I am ofcourse the best son-in-law any family can hope for. mr.green

I say you have low standards . . . . "Fury" only sounds impressive because of the guitar playing, the song is rathe rpedestrian as is "Black Sweat."

You people don't remember "Joy In Repetition," "Crucial," "Adore," "Moonbeam Levels," "When Doves Cry," "All My Dreams," hmm the list goes on and on . . . the curent offerings pale in comparison. True genius builds on superior efforts, it doesn't regress!

I completely disagree. So many of his songs in the 90's were just breathtaking, but they got lost in the shuffle of so many of those songs where he was trying to be something he's not.

Like mapual just said, Fury is really quite a standard song for him. It just sounds impressive 'cause he played such amazing live guitar (like he always does).

There are so many classic songs since his departure from WB.

Soul Sanctuary
Face Down
The Love We Make
Friend, Love, Sister, Mother/Wife
Avalanche
I Love U But I Don't Trust U Anymore
She Gave Her Angels

etc.

Those are all great songs, and they all come from his WB days (which is kinda what I was getting at).

I do like many individual songs, but I'm saying if is I feel that if "Black Sweat" and "Fury" are indicative of the 3121 album as a whole, then I'll consider the album as a whole as superior to his albums since Chaos & Disorder...

Musically I liked The Ranibow Children, but the lyrics really ruined parts of it for me. An instruemntal version of that album would be cool...

- The thing I like about ´Fury´ is that it´s flawless. Nice melody, nice lyrics (thing not so constant in P´s music), it´s NOT embarassing or corny...but it really doesn´t compare to the masterpieces you mentioned, of course.

Fury is a good, solid song, but it's nothing any Hendrix inspired rocker couldn't come up with. Seriously.

That may be the case.

But very, very few artists could put in such an assured, accomplished and captivating first performance of the song and seize the moment - as Prince did on Saturday. Seriously.

Which I'd never even dispute. I just think a lot of people are going to be disappointed when they hear the album version.

For quite a while now, Prince's studio songs have lacked the same kind of urgency seen in his live performances of them.

I'm not too big a fan of Morning Paper's lyrics, but 319 and Face Down are fucking classics.

I don't pay attention to the lyrics. I just love the "orchestration" of the song. It has a very "musician" type sound, and up until I heard it I didn't consider P much of a musician, just a singer.

try tofurkey!!

btw i don't think prince shames his recent work. listen to 'supercute' and my 'medallion' from the club offerings and you can hear him deep down funky. he never lost it, imo. but i agree fury rocks. haven't heard black sweat yet boxed

Speaking of the 90's song, while their are a few good ones,7 being my favorite!, and as much as i love 7, it still has this sullied 90's after-taste and smell, faint but still there.

Funny, but to me "Crucial" is an ordinary Prince ballad...good, but nothing to write home about. And "All My Dreams" is just downright embarrassing...evidence that there's a reason some tracks were never released...lol

"Black Sweat" and "Fury" blow both out of the water.

No inspiration...focus for many years on too many things at the same time...trying his talents on other genres and styles...could be any number of reasons.

I think it might have something to do with output. He hasn't released a record in a while. He continuosly writes but just like anybody else it's not all good.

A lot if artists wait 2,3, 5 years or so between albums. I beleive that allows them to grow and collect the good stuff. If you took all his 90's stuff there's probably 3 or 4 tight ass albums in there instead of how ever many he released.

lol,,.. yea, in the 90's i had to shut the door and listen to his new music alone, a lot of it was that bad, didn’t want to get caught dead listening to it.
