So superfical and unimportant that you had to clarify his precise ethnicity. I was actually pointing out that it hadn't been an issue but you go for it. And telling someone to grow up is sooo immature.

LOL *sigh* <---- these mean that I'm above this conversation.

Will this topic ever end. It's such a frat boys debate. Musical artistry is not about competition. It is not a sporting event. Everyone has favorites but enough already. There is no logical answer to the question. Is it about speed, tone, technical brilliance, guitar composition, virtuoisity...and so on. And why do great black guitarists always get left out of the debate (Eddie Hazel, Stanley Jordan, Vernon Reid, etc.)?

Half the discussion in the last thread on this subject was about Stanley Jordan, and I've seen Vernon Reid's name come up quite a few times in my time here. Hendrix gets mentioned often - apparently he was black, though that may be just a rumor. Prince is black too, you'll find there is the OCCASIONAL discussion of his guitar playing. But don't let the facts stop you, you see what you want to see.....its your universe, I just thank you for letting me be part of it.

You forgot about Charlie Christian, Ike Turner, Robert Johnson, Carlos Santana and many more. The point was the absurdity of the entire discussion. And if you think that there isn't a shred of critical eliteness when this discussion pops up all you have to do is look at the Rolling Stone list of great guitarists and examine all the missing names (Prince included). For that matter, take a look at alot of the "Best Rock and Roll Artists/Albums of All-Time" lists and you will see the majority of it dominated by white males. Where are all the great blues artists on this post? They virtually invented rock guitar.

And to the other comments - in America, Prince and Jimi Hendrix are very much black and their identity and ethnic background do not need your breakdown.

How could you tell, that I'm not the one who's "the greatest guitar player" in the world. Besides musicianship is a very relative concept; we could emphasize different aspect of it(technique, musicality, sound, rhythm, fastness etc.)

Only think we can know for sure is our own taste.

It's really a matter of opinion, some people might say Hendryx, some might say Santana, some might say Van Halen and some may say Prince. I like Prince's style, he plays hard rock riffs but he plays them on a higher note and sometimes under the beat. You're judging P by Fury, do U remember I'm Yours, Alexa De Paris, God (instrumental), I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man, or even Drive Me Wild (Dance Mix) or Let's Go Crazy (Dance Mix)(switching from rock to funk). He may not be the greatest guitar play but he is 1 of the baddest but what seperates him is he is package deal. Has any 1 of these greats achieve, accomplish & influence a decade. I think it should be about the guitarist's style

Too much is made of technique. Most people don't base their admiration or enjoyment of a piece of music based on it. If they did, how would you explain the popularity of Rod Stewart?

Louis Armstrong could not sing. But if you want to make me get all teary-eyed and blubbery, just play his rendition of "It's A Wonderful World".

At the end of the day, it's all about listening to someone who makes you feel good. In my opinion, technique should be a means to an end, not an end unto itself. But if listening to someone who boggles your mind at the sheer "impossibility" of the riffs they can play takes you to a better place, then who's to judge you for it? Just don't judge the opinions of others. Why piss on their Cheerios?

I agree... I happen to like shredding... You like what you like... These greatest guitarist threads are kind of fun... But nothing you should take seriously.

Greatest or not, he definitely should have been included on Rolling Stone's Top 100 greatest guitarists list. The fact that they included Wyclef Jean and not Prince still amazes me.

Amen. Unbelievable. I cancelled my subscription to that rag because of lists like those. There Greatest Album of All-Time list has the Sex Pistols ranked higher than Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin, Miles Davis, Michael Jackson, Prince, James Brown and so many others.

Don't get me wrong. I can do with a good shred now and then, but for me it needs to take place within the context of the music, not just shredding for the sake of showing you can do it. It can be just as powerful (and difficult) to play something that's technically simple and make it "sing". Sometimes folks hide a basic lack of ability by playing loud and fast.

dirtyman2005

for fecks sake

its pretty much standard fact that Jimmi Hendrix is the greatest guitar player thats ever lived.

Richard Thompson is not even fit enought to lick Hendrixs guitar,
let alone the majority of blues players and guitar players

examples

van halen
prince
vai
satriani
slash
bb king
eric clapton

the list goes on

Richard thompson is a nobody who no one gives a shit about

so that sums it up

Richard thompson is not good enough and never will be

Right, Topic Closed

Steve Vai is mistaking being a technical proficient player with being an artist, someone who lets his or her soul, vision and identity shine trough in what they are performing...

I watched a concert on TV he gave with a dutch orchestra an he bored my to dead....yes, technically a very good guitarist, but not touching my soul in any ways....

I understand people thinking this, but I totally disagree. I think Steve is a composer & arranger as much as guitar player. I just think his music is beyond what most pop listeners can handle.

"Too many notes," like Mozart was accused of.

Doesn't mean you have to like him, but I do, and not just his amazing guitar runs.
