First listen: Wasn't wild on it.

Second listen: Grew on me massively. I just hope the album version isn't over-polished and instead is rougher and edgier. If it is produced like the tracks on "TGE" it could sound great.

That was one of the greatest performances I’ve ever seen on SNL; far superior to his Grammy performance that to this day continues to be talked about as if it were the stuff of legend. “Fury” is the stuff of legend, along with “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Clapton, The Rolling Stones and Hendrix -- if he were still alive -- I suspect would all love to have “Fury” in their grand repertoire.

This is the type of song that can make a career, or reshape one. It’s that improbably good.

And if Prince should ever find himself in the presence of a Stones’ audience again, he now has the goods to keep the drunken Hells Angels from violent outbursts; unless you count demanding an encore at knifepoint violent.

Hendrix is dead?!! eek Man, I gotta start cruisin the news sites!

Dead? Are you sure? Are you a doctor?

Another insecure rant from a Prince fan who can't accept anything but praise as a credible opinion.

I even said the song was "good" at least. I don't see how that constitutes being that negative.

Then again, you said I get off on being negative, and seeing as how you're my therapist, you would certainly know.

No, you've just done this so many times it's probably a conditioned response. By Prince's standards, it's a good song, great performance. By anyone else's standards who's releasing music today, well it's not even fair to try to compare. So, I'd like to know what's "great" in your opinion.

Even still, good or great, this is the best Prince has been in nearly 20 years, at least, and as far as commercially, it might be the best he's been since Purple Rain, but we'll soon know..

Why is it that it's okay to say "OMGZ BEST SONG SINCE PURPAL RAIN!!11!" more than once, but I can't express the fact that I don't think it's that great more than once?

Double standard.

I don't think this is the best he's been in nearly 20 years. Not even close.

Prince rock songs that I find great:

Bambi
Let's Go Crazy
Computer Blue
Darling Nikki
Purple Rain
Interactive
Endorphinmachine
Gold

etc.

I think a lot of fans might be overrating a song like Fury because it's been a while since he recorded a pure rock song and because he's able to make average songs sound ten times better with his uncanny live playing.

The song is not great, but the performance was.

I could be wrong, but I have every right to express that opinion even if it's not what you wanna hear.

The thread is called "Discuss the *SONG* here", not "Praise the *SONG* here."

It's alright.

His guitar playing was breathtaking, but the song itself just doesn't have much of a memorable hook or chorus.

I don't think Prince knows how to write a song that's catchy anymore.

No, hooks are for the Prince of old, if these three songs off of 3121 are anything to go by. smile

I'm not saying Prince can't still be a great studio artist. ONA: Solo Piano & Voice and certain songs from TRC show that he can still be brilliant. But I do think he's trying to be a great pop star long after he's lost his knack for it.

Absolutely Brilliant!!!
I haven't heard Te Amo, only heard Black Sweat 5 times watching the video online (very catchy, very cool) but Fury is a dream come true!! Maybe his best live tv performance ever. He came out on fire and never let go. The playing, the tone, the passion, the vocals, the guitar mastery - I can't stop watching this damn thing.
God I hope the album contains the soaring passion and rawness of this.
I hope the vegas horn fills and over production remain absent on this next album.
I love his ability to create all the diverse types of music he can, but in doing so he has missed out on a lot of the props he is truely due from the rock market.
Damn that was long overdue! I hope he's reading and soaking in the incredible response he's getting all over the internet from that performance, and realises how incredibly huge the reaction would be to a long overdue, full on pop/rock album. His legend would be sealed and realised by the masses, and not just the knowing few who have followed him for 20 plus years.
That would keep me glued thru another decade of jazz, funk and all his other faascinating musical leanings and experimentations. Just give us 1 year of the stunning sort of balls-out rock we know ur capable of slaying us with! Just 1 dedicated guitar rock/pop album!!
Damn what I would give to see his rock version of When U Were Mine segue into Fury live!

EXACTLY!!!
My sister in law from Kansas called us at 10:30pm Sat to tell us he was going to be on SNL. She knows I am a fan (obviously she does not know how big of a fan since she thought she needed to tell me about SNL) anyways- she is not a fan of his but her hubby likes some of his music. I thought it was pretty cool that she heard about it and contacted me.
Also- Friday morning the clearchannel station here for Rap & R&B 95.7 The Beat played Prince -Kiss as their Old Head Hit of the day and mentioned that he was performing on SNL during their show twice that morning.
I called to let them know I really appreciated them giving him a shout out and told the to play Black Sweat and others off of 3121. If they did not have it yet- they needed to get it ASAP!!!!!

Just to be fair, I do know what you mean. Could the song use a stronger hook (and one that's less similar to "Girls and Boys")? Sure. But I think people are justifiably psyched because the guitar and the energy and the lyrics and the vocal performance all more than made up for it. Dspite his flashy dancers and slick style, this just isn't a pop song. I feel like pop often uses "clever hooks" to mask the lack of all those other things.

I have to admit, I was expecting Tara come what uon, but when I watched this, my jaw dropped.. Talent is so lacking these days that when you actually see talent like this on TV, it makes you really apppreciate Prince even more.

I don't think even the most anti-Prince fan can deny this performance was amazing.. I loved the voice, the girls and the guitar blew me away. I think I've watched it about 10 times already. Man was this a pleasant surprise!

Dead on it laura! PK has the right to say what he wants but isn't it amazing that the negative comments are so far and in between? To be fair, he said it was good. I'm loving it so much. We're all together with Fury! It's fantastic!

So for the record, am I the only one who doesn't think the song is anywhere near the level of great?

It's good, mostly because of the guitar, but it's really just watered down Hendrix without a strong chorus.

I'm not sure how to judge the song itself until I hear the studio version.

There have been Prince songs that I thought were ok that when played live totally kicked ass. This may or may not be one of those. It's definitely a good song. Surprising how Jimi/Dylan-esque it was, but in a good way.

It didn't strike me as a song that's meant for top-40 radio, or even modern rock radio which isn't necessarilly a bad thing. Alot of radio nowadays wouldn't know what to do with a decent guitar lick. I can say this for sure, this song makes a great live track.

Heard it once so far, and honestly can't even remember how it went, and I didn't like it.

A friend TiVo'd it for me so I will check it out again, and possibly it'll grow on me, but the 1st impression wasn't very good.....AT ALL.

I WANT to like it, I REALLY do.

I liked the guitar, and I was too busy trying to figure out the back up dancers to hear the lyrics.

I KNOW I'm gonna get bashed, but it reminded me of an old man trying to be cool.

I LOVE PRINCE, I DO.....so I want it to be good. I have to watch it again with my eyes closed.....I HATED the dancers.....and Princes eyebrows.

Don't stress it if you ain't feeling it. The way things are going, I think they'll be something on 3121 for you. The same with PurpleKnight and anyone else having a problem with any if not all the songs that have been heard so far.

totally diggin the track!!!!. . .

this isn't meant to be a bad thing - but i had to ask myself if this was a re-make of some old joint from the 70's or something . . . you know how he performs other's songs for fun sometimes . . . puts the Prince-twist on it.

anyhoo - i'm always happy to find out it's a Prince original!! . . . i don't like when he borrows material . . .

it isn't borrowed . . . right?? confused

Prince ROCKED it on SNL. I must admit I was not 2 excited (like many) at first..expecting him to do 'Te Amo' or some crap song.....Man did I eat my words and thoughts! How did I ever doubt my Princey!!!???

FURY is the best song I've heard from him in years...probably since '95 and 'Endorphinmachine' and 'Dolphin'...though I love the funk stuff (I do love 'Black Sweat' too) I think we've had our fill of 'funky' Prince and many of us longtime supporters are ready for him to rock out. And that he did! So far I am pleasantly surprised and have not been so excited for a Prince album in some time. Takes me back to the 80's and having sleepless nights just anticipating the next P record to come out. I'm 12 all over again!

'Musicology' was for the masses....'3121' is for the P freaks!!!!!

I'm sooo going to his next LA gig (cant believe I missed him 2 weeks ago!.

I BELIEVE AGAIN!!!!! nuts dancing jig
