Rate a record: The Truth.

Essential acoustic. A near masterpiece. Animal Kingdom mars the release, but the album is deeply musical, and the little things you hear in the mix, surprise you everytime. The first three songs are the best things Prince will ever write.
All you others say Hell Yea!! woot!

Some definite acoustic gems...Dont play me, animal kingdom,..excellent.
I would not go so far as to say he will never write anything better
than the first three songs....that is pushin it...Prince
is quite capable of surprising all of us....just wait and see.

I like that you appreciate "Animal Kingdom", the sentiments in that song are rare/fresh for Prince. I guess it helps to be a vegan & animal lover to get with it. I don't like the vocal sweetning of the opening lyric, however. The dolphin sound effects at the end remind me of the birds chirping at the end of "Call My Name", and make him appear to be a more grounded human being in my eyes.

"Circle of Amour" is a truly unique and oddly beautiful melody.

I like the tough chord work of "3rd Eye"

"Facination" is the kind of unexpected track that "Rave" and "Musicology" lack.

"Other Side of the Pillow" is pulled off with such casual mastery of vocal talent and guitar work.

"Comeback" features some of his most beautiful vocals and vocal layering.

Not that it's a particularly great track, but "Man in a Uniform" has a whimsy that he is too serious to put out nowadays.

***

I didn't like this album until recently, because it doesn't have the Prince "sound" that I look for and typically hooks me in, but in retrospect, in it's place in his overall discography, it's one of his warmest, fullest albums; maybe his last complete "album-album" in the artistic sense, except for TRC.

I'm glad to see that some others like this album as much as I do. The writing, singing, and instrumentation are all great. Plus it's very cohesive, although the songs vary in style. I love the whimsy in songs like "Dionne" and "The Other Side of the Pillow", the depth of the title track and "Don't Play Me" and the sheer beauty of "Circle of Amour", "One of Your Tears" and "Comeback". It's definately one of my favorites.

"Animal Kingdom mars the record" come on! It makes the record. What other artist would dare make a song like that? No one, that's who, not even Tenacious D and they rock!

The Truth, in truth, is a superb CD and has in Come Back one of Prince's greatest songs. Simple as that.

Listened to it only once (maybe twice) in my life. I am not into accustic guitar at all. Somehow I just can´t get into this album.

It was a very entertaining trinket for a while. Rarely do I listen to it nowadays, he could have put more work into it to be honest. Basically, it's the same problem in the end that applies even to Newpower Soul - he wasn't concentrating enough on the material.

But it's alright. I'll give it three pineapples out of five.

Great Album!!!! "Dionne" is a classic masterpiece with brilliant lyrics, outstanding vocal arrangement and complex guitar lines. The song shows Prince's musical depth/range and would not be out of place in a hipster italian coffee shop. The song is "beautiful strange" in the best tradition of Prince's quirky off-beat songs. Sometimes Prince does sublime, loss and heartbreak so well. This song would be a great Rufus Wainwright cover.

The album is a great example of the rewards of Prince's experimental side. I pray for an acoustic album #2.

This is a great album.

There's a great feeling of consistency on The Truth. It really feels like a whole piece of work and not just a random collection of songs.

His lyrics on this album are some of the most heartfelt and beautiful he's ever written.

When's the last time he wrote a song as fearlessly revealing and honest as Don't Play Me?

It's not just the lyrics that make this album special though, but his vocals too. You can hear it in every song; this is an album Prince cared about. These weren't just casual songs to him, but personal messages. It makes the album feel like a confessional. Just listen to the way he sings those lines in a song like One Of Your Tears. There's such a raw vulnerability there.

The album also has a startling amount of range for an acoustic piece.

There's the bitter confessional Don't Play Me, the tongue in cheek sounding Man in a Uniform, the simply beautiful Circle of Amour, and the heartbreaking Comeback. All in one tight package.
The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

"You still wanna take me to prison...just because I won't trade humanity for patriotism."

Prince talked at one point of re-releasing this as a single disc.
Wonder what happened with that idea?

And I give it a 4 on a scale of 5.
