Simple and straight forward...

... at this moment in time, I'm more inclined to think of Josh Homme as a more creative and driving force than Prince. Is there anyone you lot would rank higher than Prince, creatively, at this moment in time?

Ask me again...in 25 years, when Josh Homme has done at least 15 or more albums, so I have something to compare and contrast. Thanks.

I am sure there are several. But what does it matter? Prince is obviously still creative. WHy should it matter that perhaps that creativity is diminished somewhat? I can say that he is certainly a LOT more creative than many popular artists today.

I believe prince's tendancy to be nurotic limits his ability to reach his full potential.

Keeping in mind, even with his limitations in place, he is still more of a force then most at their full potential.

ASIDE (man I need to start using spellcheck)
News: Prince pulls his head out his ass in the last moment.
Bad News: Prince wasted too much quality time doing so.

I'd consider Ryan Adams a more prolific artist than Josh. He seems to be inspired...

geez prolificness has nothing to do with the measure of an artists' overall worth. Josh Homme is not anywhere near the same playing field as Prince. you're talking about a musicial genius, well-versed on many instruments and styles over a long period versus a (relative new-comer) hard-rock guy who has written a few good songs.

Doesn't Josh Homme play football for the Carolina Panthers?

Oh. My bad. That's "Jake DelHomme".

To say that Josh Whom? is a more creative force that Prince right now is like saying George Michael and Elton John are straight men.

I'm not comparing the two, what I'm saying reflects my music mood at the moment. When I want to listen to something that provokes, inspires or challenges me, at this moment in time (there I go again), I turn to Mr Homme... in whatever form he chooses to appear.

Comparing the two for the moment, Josh Homme's fledgling career appears to be, vaguely, mirroring Prince's. Four albums in and he has created, to my knowledge, two other outlets for his music - The Dessert Sessions and Eagles of Death Metal, plus his work with Dave Grohl and Mark Lanegan. He uses his singles to release other music, much like Prince does, and, in fact did a cover of 'It' on the Dessert Session single 'Crawl Home'. I like the way he has brought a freshness to a dying/flagging genre... in the same way... etc... and is quite an enigmatic, freakish, funny man.

I guess I'm happy to wait for Josh Homme to make twenty five years worth of albums, as some has suggested, but everyone starts somewhere... As I say, I'm not comparing, I'm, perhaps, lamenting, that Prince, new Prince, no longer does it (Though I did enjoy much of Musicology and look forward to hearing 3121), Josh does; Lullabies to Paralyze is a wonderful album and I would heartily recommend it to all.

Okay Boy Simon... in that case... I consider John Mayer a more creative and driving force at this time... since that was actually your question.

I am in no way saying that John Mayer is more talented than Prince, but given the direction of music today... minus all the hip hop crap out there... I think John Mayer is extemely influential, and much more of a creative and driving force... given the tastes of music today, and the MTV college audience.

I dig a lot of John's stuff. I'm also a Dave Matthews fan, but I think he's fallen off just a "little bit" in recent years.

Good topic though...
