I'm confused about how his legacy is being "hurt" All of the Warner albums (which are the most important) are still available and still in print right?

Yes his legacy is hurt by it. Yes he signed a bad deal. Yes, he REALLY should have known better by that point in his career.

Now if he wants a continuing relationship with WB he apparently has his terms. They may be unreasonable to you and me, but it's easy to say that when it's someone else's money at issue.

If I had to guess on remasters, either they'll work something out or he'll just wait till he owns them outright. C'est la vie.

your right...i guess i post in hopes that he would read it and wake up, get over the issue and agree to reasonable terms..

What about 'Ultimate Prince' ?

Is that remastered? WB can re-release stuff as much as they want. But remastering would require his approval.

According to the details in the main thread - the project has had Prince's input. He was up for it at one point, and he had input into the tracklisting, it's only now that the release looks to clash with 3121 that he's getting cold about it....

WB tried to do a Purple Rain: 20th Anniversary Edition (not Rhino, WB frontline). Prince was not interested unless WB gave him his masters back....

So there was some discussion about this, presumably around the time of the PR DVD and the Musicology tour. Interesting...

So are you telling me that you know Tangerine17 was witness to these events?!

hmm, yes I was. The Film "master" so to speak always belonged to Warner and they can do whatever they want with it. Music contracts are very diferrent. WB was not interested in doing the 2-CD Deluxe Edition unless they had outtakes from the film. I myself spoke with Michel Colombier who scored Purple Rain about what he has. There are hours of score music. Unfortunately, Michel died shortly after our conversation. But Prince's interests were in a deal for Musicology where EVERY major label would release it simultaneously and WB would be the main distributor...hmm, no go on that one. No one was interested apparently. So he was not into the Purple Rain deluxe when "Musicology" was not accepted. Well, something like that.

The Gold Experience is out of print, but I think that is an even more difficult topic (contract-wise).

That really gives me the urge of watching the Kevin Smith talk over at HQ once again. "You know, he is living in Prince-world too long..." biggrin

prince can really come off like a lil b*tch.

We're talking business here. WB needs him for re-release. He is not happy with them and so he tries to renegociate with them.
Majors are really evil in the way they do their business nowadays. I think that's fair enough that artists negociate rather than accepting their conditions right away.
Il n'y a pas de sentiment plus exaltant que celui d'appartenir à une nation si diverse, si libre et si douée pour le bonheur.
