THE PLEDGE..... I am elated by the 9th Circuit's decision. The hegemony of majoritarian religion is so insidious and subtle that it needs to be shaken up from time to time. People should actually read the Establishment Clause of the Constitution.
Historically, this is a brilliant change of Cold War doctrinal insanity. The McCarthy-era Congress of 1954 passed a law which added the "under God" to the already existent Pledge. The Pledge was written, by the way, by a Babtist minister, who was also a Socialist. He didn't feel the need to add "under God." But Eisenhauer signed it and it became the law. For those who also foolishly believe that other mythological nonsesnse has always existed in the U.S., remember this: "In God We Trust" was only added to our money in 1950, by the same Red Scare lunatics of yore. The original imprint was E Pluribus Unum ("From many, one"). And one more thing. This whole business about how "anti-religious" this ruling is makes me want to vomit blood. It is not anti-religious for Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims, Taoists, Jains, Sikhs, Shammans, Secular Humanists, Wiccans, Shintoists, or Confusianists. All these religions are practiced by American citizens, many of whom fight and die in the same damn wars as those who belive in "god" or believe in nothing at all. This ruling is not anti-religious. It is simply anti-majoritarian. But, then again, so is the Constitution of the United States. Finally, the sick corporate-owned news media in San Francisco are just as yahooistic about this story as I'm sure the rest of the country is. Last night they trotted out a paraplegic Vietnam Vet who said he fought and lost his arms in Vietnam fighting for the right to say the Pledge. That's just offensive. They exploited him. And any soldier or defender of soldiers who pulls this kind of thing is just as vile, such as the U.S. Senate. Soldiers don't die for our right to say the Pledge. They die because they're defending our freedom. . . everyone's freedom. And, what about all the soldiers who died in WWW II? At that time, the Pledge did NOT say "under God." Were their deaths less patriotic? I'm at once elated and sickened. Elated with the unusual adherence to the Consitution practiced by the 9th Circuit, and sickened by this country's impatient, blind, and ignorant response to such a decision. . Do you love your country? Do you love your country as much as you love God? Without God there is no country.
-Prince, The War Hey, draw your own conclusions... All I'm saying is, do you worship the constitution?

It seems the moderators' attempts to curb "general discussion" topics has only led to ORGers spilling their topics into other forums that REALLY have nothing to do with the thread. Seems you can't stem the flow of input about what's on people's mind. They'll just overflow into a pool of discussion that has no choice but to take the displacement. Oh well. People will be people.

I'm hardly the poorer for it, but I learned from it & haven't started another unrelated topic. Pavlov's dogs like this guy are a bit slower on the uptake, obviously.

Wow, I'm sorry I posted this "unrelated" topic. I won't make the same mistake twice. Thank you all so much -- Sometimes I just love people.

I think your post was right the fuck on Jatrig, I just read it to my friends and they all agree, as do I. Your thinking is sound. ---------------

I'm going to lock this thread, since it has nothing to do with Prince or his music. Sorry... General Discussion will probably reopen soon. Please note: effective March 21, 2010, I've stepped down from my prince.org Moderator position. |
