May Day! May Day! Unedited version of Little Red Corvette

I remember when this was first released. I was in Jr. High and I used to go to this import store in the valley that got stuff quicker than anybody else. Well, I saw the 12' version of Little Red Corvette and flipped, all the while wondering what was going to be so different about it compared to the version off of the album. Up untill that point, I wasn't that crazy about the song. I prefered "Lady Cab Driver" and "Automatic". I was happy that Little Red Corvette was a big hit for P (MTV WORE this video out), but still, it was very MOR. But when I listened to the long version, right away the Lady Cab Driver style funk was brought out in the mix. Simply put; the bass guitar! Man, I thought, why didn't P put THIS version on the album?! Because P wanted, ..ahem..NEEDED a crossover hit at this point and he didn't want to blow it with getting too funky. But he made up for it in this mix. The tracks were there all the time, he just buried certain ones for FM radio. The funky bass guitar doubling the funky bass keyboard line, plus his "May Day! May Day!", this is one of his early 80's funk cuts! Just the second half of the song alone. This is P's "black" version of Little Red Corvette. O.G. P fans will know what I'm talking about. Anyway, who out there digs this version?

I dig this one a lot....it gets kinda forgotten because most of the time I´m too lazy to dig it out of my vinyl collection and the album version is a bit ...well, I like it , but I heard it too often. So everytime I put this one on my turntable it has a very refreshing effect.
I love those trademark basslines from way back....
Are you familiar with that live version of Lady Cab Driver ? Detroit ? That one is also nice !

Yeah, this version is HOT!! I don't even listen to this song unless it's this version. Funky as hell, especially with that bass line. DAMN, I miss the way he played bass in his jams back in the 80s. It seems like now he's more content with using the pop and slap technique in tribute to his "hero", Larry G.

Its a black version just because its got a dance bass line and a few shouts?

Besides, its not an "unedited" version, just an extended remix done after the album version was completed. The extended middle section is the give away. Typical bad editing.

I gotta hear this version, I didn't know it existed, someone send me one right away. I can't believe that there might be a version better than the one on the album. I remeber hearing this song on radio, then being flabbergasted by the album version and listening to it over and over again in the dark. It was the start of my real life as a musician. LRC is the greatest song I've ever heard, the way it builds and builds and even continues to raise the stakes in a way that defies you not to raise your volume as it fades out. I've performed this song adapted to piano and people go nuts over it every time.

But yeh, for me, there is no other version of LRC. Mojo used play it Every Night. I still haven't tracked down a vinyl copy of it, but I made an mp3 of an old cassette, and it sounds alright. I don't think that's "bad editing" at all tho, whoever said that.

One of my favorite Prince remixes. I love the part where he yells out "So you'll NEVER FORGET". I have the German import 12" and the US promo 12" with this mix on it.

The 'Dance Mix' version, originally released on 12" vinyl, was later released by Warners on Back 2 Back CDs

http://www.dtt-lyrics.com...t.html#red

Little Red Corvette (Dance Mix)

I guess I should've known by the way U parked your car sideways
That it wouldn't last
See, U're the kinda person that believes in makin' out once
Love 'em and leave 'em fast
I guess I must be dumb cuz U had a pocket full of horses
Trojan and some of them used
But it was Saturday night, I guess that makes it all right
And U say - "What have I got 2 lose?"

And honey, I say Little Red Corvette
Baby, U're much 2 fast (Oh)
Little Red Corvette
U need a love that's gonna last

I guess I should've closed my eyes when U drove me 2 the place
Where your horses run free
Cuz I felt a little ill when I saw all the pictures
Of the jockeys that were there before me
Believe it or not, I started 2 worry
I wondered if I had enough class
But it was Saturday night, I guess that makes it all right
And U say - "Baby, have U got enough gas?"
Oh yeah!

Little Red Corvette
Baby, U're much 2 fast (Yes U are)
Little Red Corvette
U need 2 find a love that's gonna last (Oh, oh)

Little Red Corvette {x2}

A body like yours oughta be in jail
Cuz it's on the verge of bein' obscene
Move over, baby, gimme the keys
I'm gonna try 2 tame your little red love machine

Little Red Corvette
Baby, U're much 2 fast
Little Red Corvette
Need 2 find a love that's gonna last, hey hey

Little Red Corvette
Honey, U got 2 slow down (Got 2 slow down)
Little Red Corvette
Cuz if U don't, U're gonna run your little red corvette right in the ground
(Little Red Corvette)
Right down 2 the ground (Honey, U got 2 slow down)
U, U, U got 2 slow down
(Little Red Corvette)
U're movin' much 2 fast, 2 fast
Need 2 find a love that's gonna last!

Girl, U got an ass like I never seen, ow!
And the ride...
I say the ride is so smooth, U must be a limousine

Ow!
Baby, U're much 2 fast
Little Red Corvette
U need a love, U need a love that's, uh, that's gonna last
(Little Red Corvette)
Babe, U got 2 slow down (U got 2 slow down)
Little Red Corvette
Cuz if U don't, cuz if U don't
U're gonna run your body right into the ground (Right into the ground)
Right into the ground (Right into the ground)
Right into the ground (Right into the ground)
Little Red Corvette, oh

Yeah!
There are some things U do 2 me
That leave me in a velvet sweat
Darling, there are some things that I want 2 do 2 U
So U'll never forget!

Mayday
Mayday!

Same here. "DMSR" was another one I was jamming at the time. I considered "Little Red Corvette" to be THE weakest track on the album.

But when I listened to the long version, right away the Lady Cab Driver style funk was brought out in the mix.

The first thing I thought of was "Lady Cab Driver" especially the extended part after the scream.

Because P wanted, ..ahem..NEEDED a crossover hit at this point

No he didn't. He would have made better jams in the long run if he had never crossed over. evillol

This is P's "black" version of Little Red Corvette. O.G. P fans will know what I'm talking about.

I know exactly what you're talking about. The long version was very funky and even though Prince was getting plenty of pop radio airplay with the single and album version, the ONLY place I ever heard the long version was on the R&B stations. I remember laughing to myself at the time thinking...."once again, the pop world is still behind". During the time we were jamming to the extended version on R&B radio, Prince had to re-release the single of "1999" for the pop world. evillol

I wish I had known that last year. batting eyes

It's very hard to find. It was even hard to find back when it was popular. I never saw the 12 Inch in any of the stores. The record store told me it was an import and ordered the 12 Inch import from London for me. When I got it home, it was the album version. For years, I wondered if it was a radio promotional version only. I never got my hands on it until 2000 when I ordered it off a site. The one I have is a funny looking three inch CD.

Its a black version just because its got a dance bass line and a few shouts?

Besides, its not an "unedited" version, just an extended remix done after the album version was completed. The extended middle section is the give away. Typical bad editing.

Nothing to get offended about, S Meat. This was the version that black radio would play, not the album version, sans me calling this "the black version". Unedited/extended, whatever. I would tend to believe it was unedited. No different from the unedited versions of Darling Nikki, The Beautiful Ones and Computer Blue. But, neither one of us were present when the song was cut, so...Point being, this version is hella funky.
