Sample this Sample that

Music today is often composed of straight samples of music from other artists. Now a days its more easy to produce a hit since there are hords of original music that producers can choose from today.

With that said, do you think, that maybe we are given Prince too much of a hard time. I mean, he remains one of the few artists who strive to create original music, (with a few exceptions). He's been doing this for almost 30 years, don't you think, him being a human being you can't expect hit after hit every time. People run out of steam and can enter a phase where they just want to mellow out. Just a thought, I know most disagree.....

It's entirely possible that Prince is in a period of mellowing out. God knows so many other artists seem to hit a period in older age where they no longer challenge themselves or their audience. However, as a fan, should I be happy about that? Should I sit back and be content with anything I get and pretend that I am more enthusiastic about it than I really am? Hell no, I would prefer Prince to constantly keep on his toes. We have no control over that, but at least we can try and send signals back about our likes and dislikes and thereby encourage him to keep striving for the best he can produce. It's all we can do as fans, and it is our duty to be honest.

If the fans give him a hard time, and have high expectations, it's probably because we've come to expect so much from him in the past.

Prince really should just sample his old tunes and sing shit on top of it.

This is kinda on topic, kinda off: I recently worked with Blues Legend Jimmy McCracklin (he sang back up on one of my songs on my bands new record). I have the Purple Rain poster (from the album) in my isolation booth. He asked "you like Prince? This song kinda has a Prince sound....you know he sampled one of my songs."
"yeah, Tramp right? For the song 7" I answered.

"I don't like sampling, he can write...why didn't he write his own thing..."

I half heartly defended him: "well, It's a good groove..."

That's why I don't like Prince sampling. Puts him in the likes of all these bad hip hop producers who ruined R&B music.

I'm glad Prince has never gotten too involved in sampling (here comes the list of samples & ripped off riffs watch...lame asses).

p.s. if u wanna hear that song I was talking about go to our myspace page, it's on there...http://www.myspace.com/barbarasteele
