It's a mistake to look at Prince's music in terms of 80's and 90's. Perhaps it's better to judge it on an album by album basis or perhaps even by era. Admittedly, my favorite era is the mid 80's, including albums such as Purple Rain, Parade, Sign 'O the Times and most of the boots and b-sides from that time. However, my next favorite era is the music from the early to mid 90's. Therefore, it would be unfair for me to claim 80's Prince is my favorite when there are so many songs from the 90's that I'd place above some of his 80's output. For instance, albums like Contraversy, ATWIAD, The Black Album, ect. are good overall but not every single track is classic IMO. I'm sure MOST people would agree that Prince's best music isn't everything from the 80's in various order followed by the 90's and so on, all perfect and precise.

That's why it's funny when I read things like "that's one of Prince's best songs of the 90's" and I'll think that's one of his best songs EVER. Songs such as Theives in the Temple, 7, Shy, Come On, In This Bed I Scream, The Love We Make and others are among his best. Now whether they're as good as his VERY best is another story, but they're atleast as good as some very good songs from the 80's. I'll even concede that Prince's better songs aren't as plentiful as they used to be, but they're there and in large enough quantity that they shouldn't be tossed aside as if they doon't matter!

Very well agreed.

Thanks!

Every artist is at their best in their 20's and 30's (unless they get a late start or don't make it that far). It just happened to be the 80's and the Revolution happened to be the band at the time.

I don't agree with that at all. In visual art you don't even get considered an 'emerging artist' until you are well into yr thities, oftentimes.

Wagner wrote his best opera last, "Parsifal". No one faults age-ed blues musicians.

Like I said, I'm speaking primarily from my own experience. The funny thing is if I ever get around to producing my major works I'll be in my thirties at least. But guess what? I'll be using ideas that I came up with in my twenties for the most part. Like I said, it all depends on when you started. Also I'd imagine like anything else these things work in cycles so I might have another creative peak in my forties and perhaps that will be the one I'll be known for.

Most artists have their best periods in their twenties because that's when they're hungriest and when they're able to completely process their inspirations and express their feelings about them. There are always exceptions but this is generally how it appears to work.

Every 80's Prince release was a reinvention of the image and the music every album from Dirty Mind to Lovesexy (not Batman) has some of the gretest music ever made. Prince reinvented his image every year not just thru music but looks and even skin colour.
1980 Dirty Mind, punk cut, black
1981 Controversy, Fancy dress quiff, whiter
1982 1999, Perm make up, blacker
1984 Purple Rain, fuller Perm makeup and paisley whiter
1985 atwiad, smaller perm, tighter clothes bandanna whiter
1986 Parade, short hair, less make up very white
1987 S.O.T Peach and black (crucial) blacker
1988 Lovesexy nuder, stylish, whiter pure prince
1989 Batman crap album great look, red and purple suits, longer hair, darker (eg Scandalous great look suck song) especially love red wing tipped heels

NOW David Bowie did the same thing with the seventies, he was a concept, Purple Rain and 1999 are equivalent with albums like Ziggy Stardust and Aladdin Sane and Low.

Prince had the 80s as he was constantly morphing.
