Parade

Probably would have sold better if 'Girls & Boys' would have been the 2nd single instead of 'Mountains'. Don't get me wrong, I love both songs, but 'Kiss' should have been followed by "Girls & Boys' with an extended 'I Wonder U' as the B-side and then 'Anotherholenyohead' with 'Neon Telephone' as the B-side.

this is one of the reasons why I keep longing for remasters
of his albums. simply because so many others have done it n
put b-sides, remixes and unreleased tracks on a second disc

that would be so absolutely amazing

drool

all those songs in good top notch soundquality, including
long versions of "Love or Money" and "Alexa de Paris" etc
and some 12" versions plus a couple of unreleased tracks,
like "Others here With Us" and "Old friends 4 Sale (86)"
or "All My Dreams" to name but a few

drool drool drool

The only adaptation I would make regarding the entire Parade
project as it was released, including it's single releases n
videos etc would be the inclusion on the album of the first,
original version of "Old Friends 4 Sale" and the ultraweird
"Others here With Us", thus providing the album with Princes
weirdest/most haunting track and his most beautiful ballad.

So stuff the 'Mountains' 12" extended version then?

Even as a B-side in preference to 'Neon Telephone'?

Personally I think the singles shoulda gone like this...

1. Kiss / Love Or Money

2. Girls & Boys / Alexa De Paris

3. Mountains / An Honest Man

4. New Position / Under The Cherry Moon

5. Anotherloverholenyohead / Others Here With Us

Definately, definately, definately.

I've always said, the 1,2 punch of Kiss, then G&B would've been killer!

Mountains was not the follow-up to Kiss - it's a stellar track, a joy, a top-ten Prince moment, but not the #2 single from Parade confused

In a completely unfeeling, record industry moment, I think Ill have to agree with beaugarde, Girls and boys would have finished what Kiss started, without a doubt. Releasing MOuntains just made all the non-fans say, oh it was just a passing thing, hes still that freak Prince!

hence, why we love Mountains.

Just because 'Girls & Boys' is the more commercial song doesn't make 'Mountains'

C'mon now. You know good and well "Girls and Boys" isn't a hit single anymore than "Mountains" is. Mountains is more pop so it was a better choice. However, it was too vanilla to make any noise on the pop charts-- that and it was a different sound than most fans were accustomed to from Prince. Besides, let's face it, after 1999 and Purple Rain, the bar was set so high people were bound to be let down by anything short of a miracle. The successes of Raspberry Beret, Pop Life, AnotherLover... and Kiss owe (largely) to Prince's ability to write a simple pop tune but Prince was obviously evolving musically at a different rate than the public.

Maybe AnotherLover should've been the second single. hmmm

That would've been the logical choice, I guess, in hindsight. Part of me wishes he had done the ballsy thing and released All My Dreams or something like that-- something completely out of left field. He was already becoming known for his eccentricity. It would've been better to play that out than try to give the public what you think it wants. You could see how Mountains would totally kill momentum for the album on the charts. It's a good song in the context of the album but on its own... disbelief

I totally disagree, "Girls & Boys would have gone 2 the #1 spot, especially in Europe. I love 'Mountains' but 'Girls & Boys' is funkier and should have made his hits and best of CDs!

Girls and Boys was the missed choice, and what's funny is that back then, i remember the song on the top 40 radio and that people were singing it in the halls in high school.... I thought it was an "a side" single back then. I also remeber thinking it sounded so catchy and cool, and the french part was "prince" cool back then.

fast forward to 1997, I was sitting around with some friends and one of them that was only into songs by nine inch nails and rob zombie, said that he had heard an old prince song he thought was great. He couldn't remember what it was exactly... but after some prodding we figured out he meant girls and boys.

Kiss was the only single on that album. I like the album, but it wasn't stuff to be played on the radio. Mountains sounded like weak Earth Wind and Fire.

In the UK, Kiss reached number 6, Girls & Boys was the follow-up which reached 11. I think it was a far catchier, radio-friendly single than Mountains would have been. Actually, the follow up then was Anotherloverholenyohead which reached only 36, Mountains never being released as a commercial single here.

It's really cool to see how many believe what I thought back in the day of Parade. "Do U Lie" was my 2nd. fave after "Kiss", but I knew that it wasn't "mainstream" material. To my ear, "Girls & Boys" sounded like the logical 2nd. single, yet it wasn't.
It's a great song.

BTW, "Old Friends 4 Sale" on this album would've been perfecto.

I totally agree with this. It's all about singles and Prince blew it after Kiss, even though I love the album. I firmly believe Girls and Boys would have been HUGE.

Was Mountains really a single in the UK? I don't remember hearing it at all on the radio. Did it chart? I did a search on everyhit.com but it doesn't list Mountains, and a while back there was a thread where someone listed every Prince top 40 UK chart hit and Mountains wasn't among them.
