Why is Batdance...

not included on the Hits/B Sides?

A number 1 song and it's not on it? Mmm.

I think it's something to do with there being soundbites from the Batman film on it such as "have you ever heard of the healing power of laughter?" and "Hi, Bruce Wayne". Which meant they'd have to pay double royalties to DC comics or Tim Burton or some such rubbish. Partyman isn't included either cos it also uses Jack Nicholson's voice at the start but 200 baloons is on the b-sides cos there are no soundbites present.

"Partyman" was on the double CD release of "Peach" in 1993. They cut out the Joker sample at the beginning so Omnithanos' explanation makes perfect sense. It would have been hard for them to do the same thing with "Batdance" for The Hits/The B-sides because the samples run throughout the song.

Notice how in "The Purple Medley" the samples are taken out from the "Batdance" snippet and they were intact at the American Music Awards.

Actually Warners own DC comics. I'm a big comic collector as well as Prince. So it wouldn't be a problem if it was on the Hits/B sides. They just probably didn't think that they were classic Prince jams.

I think a lot of other songs should have been on the Hits/B-sides. It's a great set still otherwise.
Some people think I'm kinda cute
But that don't compute when it comes 2 Y-O-U.

I beleive the samples were a big reason why the song is not there. Becasue it was a number 1 hit. You will notice the song isn't on the Very Best of Prince either.

And as said before, the samples were taken out of the Purple Medley also.

Warners didn't own DC back then did they? I thought that was in the last few years? But then I was never much into DC.

Yes Warner did own DC back then, they have since the mid 70s, but remember Nicholson had a percentage deal on the movie and merchandise so Warners would've had to pay out of their own pockets for use of samples - I think most of the principle actors would've had to get paid for their work used in other product.

Also worth making note: Even though Warner Bros. ownes DC Comics, they are for all intent and purpose a separate entity within the corporate megalith we know, so they would've also had to get paid - Warner Bros. own many companies we may not realise.

Yes, Warner Bros did own DC back then. In 1967, Detective Comics Inc. (founded in 1935 by Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson as National Allied Publications, bought out in 1937 by Harry Donenfeld and J.S. Liebowitz and changed it's name to Detective Comics Inc.) was bought out by Kinney National Services, which changed it's name to Warner Communications in 1969, when it bought out the Warner Bros movie studio (founded in 1923 by Harry Warner and brothers Albert, Sam and Jack Warner.). The Warner logo started appearing on DC books in 1981.
Batdance was left off Prince The Hits because it was viewed by Warner Bros as a song for Batman, not a Prince song. Batdance should have been on there. Batdance is one of my favourite Prince songs.

Yeah I like it too.

I like the part in the video when the batman Prince looks at the real Prince on his keyobards and the long haired prince looks round. Its just silly.

That whole video is silly.

Infact, i really like the choreography. Very fitting dancing for the joker. With the silly faces and gun pointing et all.

the way i say it the "hits" from prince's career were in this package.....a "best of" package would be which songs prince (or his fans) consider his best work..

k no?

Nothing to be ashamed of. The song was done to promote the movie. It was one of the few times P actually did what he was paid to do. Promote the film.

If "My Name Is Prince" was not a hit, then "Peach" and "If I Was Your Girlfriend" were definitely not hits and shouldn't have been included. (Reckon, I am glad there WERE included.)

If I was Ur Girlfriend was a minor hit. It did well in certain parts of the country, and in other parts it flopped. Peach was considered a new track on the Hits package.

BEAUGARDE

'If I Was Your Girlfriend' was not a hit single, it detroyed "Sign O' The Times" momentum on the charts and 'Adore' wasn't even a single. Both songs R considered some of his best work, but didn't even make it on the best of. I think 'Batdance' didn't make it because Prince's CD is considered (by Warners) a soundtrack. Warner's "Hits" & "Best Of" R commercial so I make my own! Bcuz they'll never get right!
