Are you talking about the Indianopolis Promo EP? There was a 5-track cd previewing tracks from the One Night Alone Live album, I think it was handed out at an ONA concert, perhaps Indianopolis? That would explain the name.

All the tacks were the same as on ONA Live apart from Xenophobia which is edited slightly.

Tracklist was Xenophobia, Muse 2 The Pharaoh, Mellow, The Other Side Of The Pillow and Strange Relationship.

Incidently, I just came across this article about how One Night Alone Live was recorded:

I think it was simply circulated to radio stations, but you may be right.

I'm glad you've posted that link.

I saw it a few weeks back and lost my history before saving it - thanks.

The link seems to be an archive from 2003, so I wonder if it was previously found and discussed here? I don't remember it. The interesting thing to me, is that Prince didn't want much of the crowd on the recording. One of the criticisms of ONA Live was that there was very little energy coming through from the crowd - but now it appears that was exactly how Prince wanted it, more like a studio recording.

There again, the engineer states that the decision to release the recordings was taken after they had been done - it is not made clear whether only a few shows were intentionally recorded like this or the whole tour - I don't know whether Prince records all his live performances as a matter of routine. I remember in an article where it mentioned he was the only one still awake on a plane and was listening to a recording of the earlier concert, so maybe. So perhaps it was only after the tour that Prince made the decision to release a live album.

Yep. It did not surprise me that the audience sounded subdued. I'm sure Prince tapes every performance, so he had the choice to mike up and increase levels, but clearly had opted to 'play down' the audience sound.

I know some people really want to hear the soundboard quality of the performer, but personally I like it when balanced with capturing the audience experience - and I don't mean some off-key howling from one individual who wets their pants if Prince pouts, but the general excitement, participation and committed audience vibe that he manages to generate because he is a great showman and performer as well as musician.. 'Joy In Repetition' is a good example. Yes, I lke the live version that has been captured, but it's frustrating not to hear the audience involvement - particularly when Prince actually enciurages it - and all you can hear is some weak-assed 'Soul Psychodelicide' or "Love me, love me"

However previous 'live' releases seemed to point to Prince preferring this approach ('It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night', 'Face Down')
