They were in the Girl Scouts together, and Prince had more badges, Rick never really got over it.

They were two of the best funk artists out there whose best work was made when they were competing against each other and were a thorn in each other's side.
Ironically, they both fell off in the same year....1985. Prince was no longer competing with Rick James because he had a huge pop audience by then. Prince began making "artsy/fartsy" music and began competing with "himself". Rick James was competing with drugs in a big way by then. Both artists' circumstances affected their music in the worst way. Andy is a four letter word. | |

Prince supported Rick on Prince's first tour, and Rick reckoned that Prince stole a lot of his ideas and Rick's audience, and became very bitter about it and would bad-mouth Prince at any opportunity. For instance, Rick claimed he had plans to do an all girl group but Prince stole the idea and came up with Vanity 6. There's also a rumour that 'Vanity' was Rick's date at some award ceremony but Prince lured her away! Fact of the matter was that Rick had had his day and couldn't accept it was over, and needed someone to blame other than his own rock'n'roll excesses. | |
